the first one is emphasizing ING Group s service tenet Our customers are at the heart of what we do The second one is some achievements they made and setbacks they met in the past years The third one report financial condition analysis and social report 谭骏祺 2014 Moreover there are still some problems in domestic companies annual reports writing so it s necessary and paramount to imitate some examples from excellent foreign companies Therefore translating this annual report will help Chinese enterprises to learn languages contents and patterns of foreign corporations annual reports to discard the dross and to select the essence as well increasing the cognition of the annual report and boosting the soft power for Chinese enterprises to participate in the process of economic globalization 陈钢 2014 Lastly translating this business report will offer me a chance to acquire knowledge of other fields and meanwhile enhance my translating level 河池学院 2015 届本科毕业论文 3 1 3 Analysis of the Translation Project Companies annual reports belong to business English As a kind of English for specific purpose business English differs greatly from ordinary English 梁晓玲 2007 therefore there are also special features lying in annual report writing and translation Firstly business English words and contents are of high profession The most obvious character of business English is the precise application of specialized vocabulary including abbreviations and acronyms with business meaning 岳军 2012 such as ING Diba UNICEF and IPO as well as business terms like payment account high profile deals and league table Secondly business activities cover a wide range of fields so there are always specialized words in regard to economy politics law insurance and freight in annual reports 王 雪 莹 2014 such as Czech Republic breast cancer insurance and investment funds Lastly in view of the formality and authority of annual reports the vocabulary in this report must be much more formal and authoritative than ordinary English 尹富林 阮玉慧 2007 That is to say substituting basis and oral vocabulary for written language and ensuring that all the words used are international For example terminate or expiry is used to replace end prior to or previous to is used to replace before and in view of is used to replace because of Syntactic features of this annual report include simple sentence structures various sentence patterns formal style tight connection and strict logic 谭骏祺 2014 Sentences in this report are on the one hand full of different patterns and on the other hand easy to understand Analyzing from the text structure the passage is well organized methodized and rich in contents Firstly there are a large number of examples in this passage to expound ING Group s achievements and deficiencies Secondly the whole structure is coherent and complete The passage begins with their service principle and stress that customers are at the heart of what they do Then it goes into the great achievements and breakthrough they made and some main setbacks they met during the past year Finally it tells readers their novel thoughts to solve problems and to set up new programs to make further development In addition the expression of the whole passage is polite and euphemistic Last although the passage is written from the point view of the CEO the contents are objective and authentic 河池学院 2015 届本科毕业论文 4 2 Procedures for the Translation Project This section is about the procedures that the author has followed to finish the translation project including the schedule for the project the preparations for the translation the steps to take in the translation and the proofreading phase 2 1 The Schedule for the Project To finish a translation project with satisfaction it s necessary and crucial to make a rational plan to ensure the work to go smoothly The schedule is generally like this January 5th 25th 2015 choosing the topic January 26th 29th 2015 collecting materials January 30th January 31st 2015 writing the thesis proposal February 1st 11th 2015 supervisor modifying the proposal February 12th March 8th 2015 writing and handing in the first draft March 9th 20th 2015 refining the first draft according to the supervisor s advice May 20th 2015 handing in the final draft June 1st 4th 2015 defending the thesis 2 2 Preparations for the Translation In preparation the first and foremost step is to select translating materials After nearly a whole day s searching online finally Message of the CEO in 2013 ING Group annual report is determined Then it comes to the period of accumulating as many relative ingredients as possible by making full use of library sources and some free academic websites so that there are relevant theories and strategies to support the translation work 2 3 Steps in the Translation The translating period can be divided into three steps The first one is reading extensively the whole text and grasping the main idea and then marking new words and long and difficult sentences Secondly reading the text again in an intensive way That is to say translating the text word by word sentence by sentence and passage by passage Finally reading the text for the third time and amending the translation slightly according to the context and trying to make the translating tone and expression as native as possible Along with the consumption of the translation here comes the most paramount period that is exactly the climax of this translation practice That is illustrating typical translating 河池学院 2015 届本科毕业论文 5 behavior by using appropriate theories and strategies In the first place choosing the befitting translation theories and then using them to explain why a sentence should be translated into such a Chinese meaning and meanwhile recognizing which translation methods are applied to interpret a certain sentence 2 3 Proofreading of the Translation The last phase is revising and refining the translation over and over again It is also useful checking whether the translated text corresponds to the original one whether the theories and methods can best explain the relative translating phenomenon and whether there are any grammar spell capital and tense mistakes as well One person s strength is sometimes extremely limited so it would be conducive to ask several students to examine the translation and give pertinent advice Then accepting supervisor s check and correcting accordingly are the last but not least step to improve the paper 3 Theoretical Framework and Case Study Peter Newmark a famous British translation theorist and educator made an important contribution to the study of translation theory Peter Newmark s translation theory mainly consists of two parts translation methods and text type classification His major contribution is the dichotomy of communicative translation and semantic translation which have already been recognized as his most influential achievement in translation studies In addition Peter Newmark divides texts into three types according to their different language functions expressive texts informative texts and vocative texts And he holds that semantic translation is used for expressive texts and communicative translation is used for informative and vocative texts Newmark 2001b In the following parts we shall briefly introduce text types semantic translation and communicative translation 3 1 Peter Newmark s Text Type Classification Theory It s widely known that language has various functions According to the famous German scholar Karl Buhler 1934 the three main functions of language are expressive function informative function and vocative function The expressive function is author oriented while the informative function is extralinguistic information content of the text and the vocative function is reader centered Later Jakobson 1960 modifies Karl Buhler s classification of 河池学院 2015 届本科毕业论文 6 language functions and come up with six language functions as follows expressive informative vocative phatic metal lingual and aesthetic with the first three as main functions and the rest as minor functions Newmark 2001 Based on Buhler and Jakobson s classification of language functions in his book A Textbook of Translation 2001b Peter Newmark puts forward his own text type classification which divides texts into three types according to their different language functions expressive texts informative texts and vocative texts Even though nearly all texts bear the aspect of the expressive informative and vocative function there is only one dominant function in a text Newmark 2001b In his book A Textbook of Translation 2001b Peter Newmark elaborates clearly that the center of the expressive function is the writer The core of this function is to be loyal to convey the writer s idea and feelings as well as writing style thoroughly without considering readers reaction When translating this kind of texts translators are not allowed to do any modification and manipulation Newmark 2001b In Newmark s opinion expressive texts of these typical kinds include serious literature authoritative statement autobiography prose and personal correspondence Different from expressive texts informative texts are usually truth centered and the author s is usually anonymous in informative texts Newmark 2001b The effective transmissi
