Cotton TV Presenter At school I often thought I m wasting my time here Then Mr Iggulden walked into our English class He was tall and very likeable I thought he was fantastic though not everyone agreed But he taught us in such an interesting way unlike any of my previous English teachers Rather than just reading books he d get us to act the stories In one lesson we watched a video of Lord of the Flies Then he gave everyone a character form the book and the whole class read the book aloud I thought it was much more fun than reading alone Another time he came in said something that we didn t agree with and we all started discussing it Then he said Right you ve got top marks in your oral examination I wasn t very good at English until Mr Iggulden became my teacher I used to get low grades but as soon as I started his classes my grades improved Sometimes we argued He usually said I talked too much but I think he liked my energy and interest I d never read poetry before but with Mr Iggulden I read loads He encouraged us to write poems too I still write them and one day I d like to publish my own collection I d always wanted to work in TV but Mr Iggulden insisted I stayed at school where I could get some qualifications He said there was only a one in a million chance that I d achieve my dream I never wanted to go to university and when at 15 I got my first television job presenting a children s programme he said Well done When the time came to leave school I was upset about leaving his lessons but also looking forward to my future life 50 What is Fearne Cotton s to East Africa You begin this trip by visiting the wonderful wild life parks As well as travel by coach there is also an opportunity to take a short trip in a hot air balloon over the parks to get a better view of the wildlife After visiting the wildlife parks you have the choice of either spending the rest of your holiday 7 nights climbing Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa or for the not so adventurous sunbathing on the beautiful white sand beside the Indian Ocean It is also possible to stay an extra week at the coast Day 1 Fly from London Heathrow to Nairobi Kenya Day 2 Drive to the National Park at Lake Manyara This park is famous for the large variety of birds which you can see there early in morning Day 3 Leave Manyara for the Serengeti National Park where you may see elephants lions and giraffes Day 4 9 Spend these days travelling by coach around the park All visitors have a window seat on the coach with a clear view for photographs of the park and animals Although the animals are not worried by tourists taking photos we ask visitors to speak quietly so as not to disturb them too much Accommodation in tents is normal in the parks All have private washing facilities The tents have plenty of space are very comfortable and have a solid floor The guides are highly experienced but there is always the possibility that you may be very unlucky and not see certain animals Day 10 Departure for the mountain or the Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean Hotel is on the beach and all rooms have air conditioning and sea views All water sports are available and there are tennis courts which you can use free of charge except during high season when there is a small booking fee No special skills are needed to climb Mount Kilimanjaro but if you choose this trip you must already be fit and healthy and ready to accept some very basic accommodation in mountain huts For practical reasons children under the age of 12 may not be accepted on certain tours 53 Which of the following might be the route of the trip A National Park Indian Ocean Mount Kilimanjaro B Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Indian Ocean C National Park Serengeti National Park Indian Ocean D Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Serengeti National Park 54 If you climb Mount Kilimanjaro you A can travel in a hot balloon B may see a variety of wild animals C can use tents free of charge D must accept sleeping in huts 55 Where can you possibly find this article A In periodical magazines B In academic reports C In biological literature D In science fictions C The American Heart Association and other groups have said for many years that people could reduce the chance of suffering a heart attack by eating less of the foods rich in cholesterol 胆固醇 These include such foods as meats milk products and eggs The Heart Association noted a number of studies which show that nations where people eat a lot of high cholesterol foods have a higher number of deaths from heart disease However the new report disagrees It was made by the Food and Nutrition Board of the United States National Academy of Sciences The new report by a team of 15 scientists said there is no evidence to link cholesterol in food directly to heart disease It noted seven major studies involving people whose diet was changed to include only foods low in cholesterol The studies found only a very small reduction in the number of heart attacks and there was no reduction in the number of heart attack deaths Other studies have shown similar results They found that a change to low cholesterol foods will have only a minor effect on the amount of cholesterol in a person s blood and only a minor effect on the number of deaths Medical scientists hope that two huge new studies may settle the cholesterol dispute The tests are designed to learn if low cholesterol foods or anticholesterol drugs or both can reduce the amount of the substance in the blood and reduce the chance of a heart attack The two new studies will be finished in the next year or two The new Academy of Sciences report also discussed other possible links between food and disease The scientists in general are deeply concerned about some of the recent advice given about food They noted that a number of private groups government agencies and several popular books have advised that people can prevent heart disease cancer and other sicknesses by changing the kinds of foods they eat The new report said there is often no good scientific evidence to support such advice In fact the scientists said such ideas often produce only false hopes or unnecessary fears 56 People could reduce the chance of suffering a heart attack by according to paragraph 1 A eating less foods with a lot of cholesterol B eating a lot of high cholesterol foods C eating food without cholesterol D eating anticholesterol drugs 57 What does the underlined word dispute in paragraph 3 mean A report B argument C control D experiment 58 Medical scientists believe that A tests have been designed to settle the cholesterol dispute B drugs have been tested to reduce the amount of the substance in blood C changing the kind of food can prevent heart disease cancer and other sickness D low cholesterol foods or anticholesterol drugs or both can reduce the chance of a heart attack D The next few decades will see great changes in the way energy is supplied and used In some major oil producing nations peak oil has already been reached and there are increasing fears of global warming Consequently many countries are focusing on the switch to a low carbon economy This transition will lead to major changes in the supply and use of electricity Firstly there will be an increase in overall demand as consumers switch from oil and gas to electricity to power their homes and vehicles Secondly there will be an increase in power generation not only in terms of how much is generated but also how it is generated To meet these challenges countries are investing in Smart Grid technology This system aims to provide the electricity industry with a better understanding of power generation and demand and to use this information to create a more efficient power network Smart Grid technology basically involves the application of a computer system to the electricity network The computer system can be used to collect information about supply and demand and improve engineer s ability to manage the system Smart Grid technology offers benefits to the consumer too They will be able to collect real time information on their energy use for each appliance Varying fee throughout the day will make customers use appliances at times when supply greatly exceeds demand leading to great reductions in bills Smart meters can be connected to the Internet or telephone system allowing customers to switch appliances on or off remotely With these changes comes a range of challenges The first involves managing the supply and demand Sources of renewable energy such as wind wave and solar are unpredictable and nuclear power which is also set to increase as nations switch to alternative energy sources is inflexible With oil and gas it is relatively simple to increase the supply of energy to match the increasing demand during peak times of the day or year With alternative sources this is far more difficult and may lead to blackouts or system collapse A second problem is the fact that many renewable power generation sources are located in remote areas where there is currently a lack of electrical infrastructure New infrastructures therefore must be built Thankfully with improved smart technology this can be done more efficiently by reducing the construction costs Although Smart Technology is still in its infancy pilot schemes to promote and test it are already underway By the year 2050 changes in the energy supply will have transformed our homes our roads and our behaviour 59 What has happened in some oil producing countries A They are unwilling to sell their oil any more B They are producing less oil than they used to C The supply and demand of oil is unpredictable D Global warming is more serious in these countries 60 Which of the following is NOT a benefit of Smart Grid technology to consumers A It can reduce the consumers electricity bills B It can tell them how much energy each appliance is using C It can reduce the amount of energy needed to power appliances D It can allow them to turn appliances on and off when they are not at home 61 What is the problem with using renewable sources of power A They do not supply a continuous flow of energy B They often cause system failure and blackouts C They can t be used at off peak times D They do not provide much energy
