ensure that you are using the latest version of this document 1 0PURPOSE AND SCOPE This document defines the general ergonomics assessments detailed identification assessment and control of manual handling tasks 2 0DEFINITIONS Ergonomics The study and design of the relationship between work and worker ergonomics aims to suit work to the worker and make greatest use of human capabilities without exceeding human limitations Manual handling Any activity requiring the use of force exerted by a person to lift push pull carry or otherwise move or restrain any animate or inanimate object Occupational Overuse Syndrome OOS Also known as repetition strain injury RSI is a term used to describe a range of conditions that involves discomfort and persistent pain in muscles soft tissue and tendons It is usually results from repetitive and forceful movements or awkward postures caused by poor ergonomics or manual handling tasks 3 0PROCEDURE 3 1Requirements 3 1 1Consultation Employees carrying out manual handling tasks and the relevant Supervisor shall be consulted prior to Planning new manual handling tasks or changing existing ones Purchasing new workplace equipment or furniture Establishing priorities for assessment of manual handling tasks Deciding methods and approaches to assessment Deciding on types of control measures Reviewing the effectiveness of controls All such consultations shall be recorded in the form of minutes by the relevant Supervisor and a copy supplied to the Construction Manager for project file records or for non projects to the relevant Manager for filing 3 1 2Risk Identification Ergonomic and manual handling risk assessment shall be carried out in consultation with the relevant employees considering the following factors Analysis of workplace injury records higher frequency rates indicate areas of greater priority for risk assessment and control Consultation with employees Direct observation through workplace inspections and audits Risk identification shall be facilitated by the relevant supervisor using the Manual Handling Risk Checklist BMS F 0412 AFRICAN MINERALS LTD Manual Handling SWI 0413 Rev 0 Page 3 of 4 Check to ensure that you are using the latest version of this document 3 1 3Risk Assessment Ergonomic and manual handling risk assessment shall be carried out in consultation with the relevant employees The assessment shall take into consideration the following factors Actions and movements Workplace and workstation layout Working postures and positions Vibration and sudden impact forces Duration and frequency of manual handling tasks Location of loads and distances moved Weights and forces Characteristics of loads and equipment Work organization Working environment Experience and skills Age Special needs of individuals The relevant Supervisor who has an understanding of the problem shall facilitate assessments The assessment of the manual handling task should be prioritised in accordance with their risk level 3 1 4Risk Control When adopting measures for controlling manual handling risk the risk control hierarchy should be referenced Measures from the top of the hierarchy should be used firstly with measures from the bottom being used as an interim measure Redesign to eliminate risk Redesign to reduce risk Use of mechanical aids or devices to reduce risk Task specific training to reduce risk Risk Control measures shall be undertaken in consultation with the relevant employees The following control options shall be considered Job re design by Modify objects or equipment Modify layouts Different actions movements forces Re arranging workflow modify tasks Maintenance Mechanical handling equipment Training particular to the task and on the principles of correct manual handling techniques Administrative controls such as rotation of employees The control options and the reasons for the choice shall be recorded 3 1 5Review and Evaluation Effectiveness of the control measures must be reviewed regularly The review should ensure that objectives of the control measures are being achieved and there are no unforeseen negative outcomes AFRICAN MINERALS LTD Manual Handling SWI 0413 Rev 0 Page 4 of 4 Check to ensure that you are using the latest version of this document 3 2Physiological Aids Physiological aids to assist with manual handling tasks such as back or abdominal support belts shall only be applied following recommendation by a qualified medical practitioner or physiotherapist to aid injury recovery and rehabilitation The use of such aids in all other cases is seen as the use of Personal Protective Equipment PPE and therefore a last resort control measure Personnel who are required to use such aids in the performance of their normal duties shall provide supporting medical advice to the African Minerals Limited Early Cash Flow AML ECF Injury Management Coordinator as to the use of the aiding device and any work limitations that apply 3 3Training All employees involved in identifying assessing and considering control of options shall receive training in the principles of each stage and ergonomic principles in general This training shall be given by a person competent to conduct such training and a record of such training shall be kept for a period of 7 years Training should be reviewed when there are Changes in work practices which involve manual handling Changes in workplace layouts Introduction of new plant and equipment Or at regular intervals Training should be provided for all new staff that are associated with the risk of manual handling Refresher training should also be given on a regular basis for
