I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as hopeless, pitiful, and dying, which sounded ominous.Christmas was coming. Dont expect any presents this year. Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. If your baby brother lives, thatll be Christmas enough. As he spoke, his were eyes filled with tears. Id never seen him cry before. The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom, I heard him say. What? Hes all right? He hung up and shouted upstairs. The hospital said we can bring Richard home! Thank God. I heard Mum cry. From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. Memories of a happy familyC Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theater, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theaters 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theater equipment in preparation for the buildings end.The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theater. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say good-bye to the old building. Theater owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theater is preparing to close down.Bradford said that large modern theaters in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theaters location was also a reason. “This used to be the center of town,” he said. “Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theater into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theater is located. The theater audience said good-bye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theater has shown its last movie. The theater will be missed.8. In what way was yesterdays cleanup at the Plaza special?A. It made room for new equipment.B. It was an all-time classic. B. It was about the history of the town.C. The audience requested it. D. The theater owner found it suitable.10. What will probably happen to the building?A. It will be repaired. B. It will be turned into a museum.C. It will be knocked down. D. It will be sold to the city government. 11. What can we infer about the audience?A. They are disappointed with Bradford. B. They are sad to part with the old theater. C. They are supportive of the city officials. D. They are eager to have a shopping center.DCalifornia Condors Shocking RecoveryCalifornia condors are North Americas largest birds, with wing-length of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning(铅中毒) nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping to rescue these big birds. In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico. Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the night, they just dont see the power lines,”says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution(电死) if they touch two lines at once. So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%. Lead poisoning has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney(肾) failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011. Rideouts team thinks that the California condors average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years. “Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them.”12. California condors attract researchers interest because they_.A. are active at nightB. had to be bred in the wildC. are found in CaliforniaD. almost died out in the 1980s13. Researchers have found electrical lines are_.A. blocking condors journey home B. big killers of California condorsC. rest places for condors at nightD. used to keep condors away14. According to Paragraph 5, lead poisoning _.A. makes condors too nervous to fly B. has little effect on condors kidneysC. can hardly be gotten rid of from condors bloodD. makes it difficult for condors to produce baby birds15. The passage shows that_.A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactoryB. Rideouts research interest lies in electric engineeringC. the efforts to protect condors have brought good resultsD. researchers have found the final answers to the problem第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。The Science of Risk-SeekingSometimes we decide that a little unnecessary danger is worth it because when we weigh the risk and the reward, the risk seems worth taking. 16 Some of us enjoy activities that would surprise and scare the rest of us. Why? Experts say it may have to do with how our brains work. The reason why any of us take any risks at all might have to do with early humans. Risk-takers were better at hunting, fighting, or exploring. 17 As the quality of risk-taking was passed from one generation to the next, humans ended up with a sense of adventure and a tolerance for risk.So why arent we all jumping out of airplanes then? Well, even 200,000 years ago, too much risk-taking could get one killed. A few daring survived, though, along with a few stay-in-the-cave types. As a result, humans developed a range of character types that still exists today. So maybe you love car racing, or maybe you hate it. _ 18 No matter where you are on the risk-seeking range, scientists say that your willingness to take risks increases during your teenage years. 19 To help you do that, your brain increases your hunger for new experiences. New experiences often mean taking some risks, so your brain raises your tolerance for risk as well. 20 For the risk-seekers a part of the brain related to pleasure becomes active, while for the rest of us, a part of the brain related to fear becomes active. As experts continue to study the science of risk-seeking, well continue to hit the mountains, the waves or the shallow end of the pool.A. It all depends on your character.B. Those are the risks you should jump to take.C. Being better at those things meant a greater chance of survival.D. Thus, these well-equipped people survived because they were the fittest.E. This is when you start to move away from your family and into the bigger world.F. However, we are not all using the same reference standard to weigh risks and rewards.G. New brain research suggests our brains work differently when we face a nervous situation. I used to love to swim as a boyMy 21 was just a short walk away from the local pool and I used to 22 most of my summer days thereI would head out 23 with just my trunks and a towelI always got there before it opened and then stayed until 24 timeIt was four hours of 25 joyI loved to dive in that cool, clean waterI would swim, splash, play games with my friends, talk, laugh, and only dry off during the 26 I always 27 home in the evenings with a smile on my face tooThere were some people who came to the 28 that I never could understand, 29 They would 30 every day carrying around and 31 their huge, heavy bags full of stuffThey would be all 32 in fancy swimsuitsThey would cover themselves in lotion(乳液), 33 then sit in the shade of umbrellasThey spent most of their time near their 34 ,sitting in chairs, and watching other people swim 35 they did dive in the pool,it was only for a few 36 before retreating back to their stuffI often 37 why they came to the pool at allSometimes I think that life at the pool is a lot like life 38 Some people spend so much time carrying around and worrying about their stuff that they 39 get to swim at allDont 40 one of themLife is for living not for sitting with your stuff21Aschool Bhome Ctraining Dswimming22Awaste Bspare Cremember Dspend23Aearly Bfrequently Cdeliberately Drarely24Asummer Bpast Cclosing Dlocal25Apure Bfalse Cadditional Dinnocent26Abreaks Bgames Ctime Dsummer27Adrove Bstayed Cmissed Dwalked28Alife Bpool Cvillage Dhometown29Ahowever Btherefore Csomehow Dthus30Aslip away Bshow up Cgive up Dtake off31Aexamining B . watching overCopened Dgot hold of32Aembarrassed Bburied Cdressed up Dfed up33Aso Bor Cfor Dbut34Abags Bshade Cumbrella Dfriends35AOnce BIf CUnless DAs36Amiles Bhours Cdays Dminutes37Aexplained B. inquired aboutCwondered Dfigured out38Afor certain Bin summer Cin particular Din general39Anever Balways Chardly Doccasionally40Abecome Benvy Cforget about Drely on第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。Hong Kong (CNN)-A strong typhoon _41_ (strike) the coast of China Wednesday, bringing massive winds and flooding to the cities of Macau and Hong Kong.Twelve people have been reported killed so far following Typhoon Hatos _42_ (arrive).
