Sales are booming, especially in countrieslike China and Russia. It so happens that in this country I prefer to drink castconditionedreal ale, which I think is a unique style to this country, and isabsolutely fabulous. I do drink bitter,particularly if I go to the north of England.Amber:No I dont drink beer. I like wine. I certainly like champagne, and I like fruit juiceand plain water.Diarmuid:Yes I drink beer. I normally drink lager but I occasionally drink bitter. It can bequite tasty, but normally just lager.Vicki: So of course not everyone in Britain likes beer, some people preferwine or soft drinks. We doBavarian style wheat beer, we have a raspberry fruit beer, we took coffee from aRwandan co-operative and added that to one of our beers. I like fruit juice, and I drink a lot of coffee but I cant imaginedrinking either of those with beer, no.Paul:I have tried alternative beers, they dont really work for me.Elena:I like fruit and I like coffee and I like beer but not together.Yvonne:I like flavoured beers, so cherry beer, strawberry beer, ones that have beenflavoured with fruit. But coffee and beer, I dont think thats a good mixture.Diarmuid:Ive tried different flavoured beers, but it is just a novelty, but I would expect mybeer to taste of beer, my fruit to taste of fruit and my coffee to taste of coffee.Sun Chen: 这么说，有些爱喝啤酒的人是尝试了这些新口味，不过喜欢的人看来不多。只有一位女士说，她喜欢这种啤酒。我们来听听他们是怎么来说，这种不同一般的口味的。Vicki: Novelty.Sun Chen: 新奇。Vicki: We wanted to find out a bit more about how people enjoy beer inBritain, so we asked people where they drink beer, at the pub or athome, and how much they drink.Sun Chen: 那英国人除了在酒吧喝啤酒以外，他们在家也喝吗？他们的酒量怎么样呢？InsertElena:I tend to drink beer in the pub, but I sometimes do have one or two at home. ButI dont drink very often and I certainly dont drink to get drunk.Paul:I drink it anywhere really, Im not picky. I dont drink to get drunk but thatsoften a side effect.Yvonne:I mainly drink if Im out, I dont really drink beer at home. Just the one bottle isenough for me. I dont like to feel out of control.Diarmuid:I really only drink it in the pub. Binge drinkers.Sun Chen: 意思就是一次性喝酒过多，酗酒to binge 意思就是超量地吃，或者是超量地喝。Vicki: But one person there said she didnt like to feel out of control.Sun Chen: Out of control 失控。现在有些爱喝酒的人为了改变人们喝酒的观念，提出来要边吃边喝。Vicki: Here are Karan Bilimoria, head of Cobra Beer, and Roger Prott,author of a book about different beers. They think beer goes wellwith food.InsertKaran:I absolutely love wine as well as beer, but it always annoys me that restaurantswill have wine lists which have 50 to 100 wines and then sometimes will serveyou one beer.Roger:If you go into a good American restaurant theyll offer you a wine list and a beerlist, and we need to do that here in this country. And its beginning to happen aswell.Karan:Of course it can happen, and the more its driven by consumers wanting it themore itll happen. Because if its say Indian or spicy food, itsnicer to have a cold beer to wash it down with.Yvonne:I prefer wine with my meals like most people.Diarmuid:I suppose its more normal to drink wine with a meal, but some meals are betterwith beer, and I think spicy food like curry or Thai food or even Chinese foodtastes much better with a nice cold beer. Whereas perhaps western or Europeanfood like French or Italian, its nice I think to have a delicious red wine with that.Sun Chen: 看来我们这次见到的这些英国人还都是比较传统。他们还都是愿意吃饭的时候配葡萄酒；但是让他们改改这个习惯，也不是不可以。Vicki: It seems that its much more popular to drink beer with spicy food,like Indian food, and even with Chinese food!Sun Chen: 要是，吃的东西太辣了就喝啤酒，而不能喝葡萄酒了。Vicki: Well, weve run out of time.Sun Chen: 我们今天的节目到这1 UK Driving Licence 英国驾照Lily: Hello and welcome to BBC Learning English. Im Lily and with mehere today is Sun Chen.Sun Chen: Hi 你好吗！我们今天要说的就是怎么样才能在英国拿到驾驶执照。Lily: Imagine that one day you come to the UK. Youd probably want toget yourself a driving licence so why not learn some basicvocabulary to get you started.Sun Chen: Good idea! 不过呀，我们还是先来学几个有关考驾照必用的词。Lily: Heres the first group of words and expressions.Sun Chen: 首先就是，驾照。Lily: Driving licence.Sun Chen: 还有，实习驾照。Lily: Provisional driving licence.Sun Chen: 理论考试。Lily: Theory test.Sun Chen: 路考。Lily: Road test.Sun Chen: 说了这么多词，你要是不能把它们全记住的话，千万不要着急，我们一会儿边说一边还会经常说到这些词汇。Lily: Have you got your UK driving licence Sun Chen?Sun Chen: Yes I have. 但是我有一条可以肯定，那就是，只要在英国考驾照，可是非常非常难！不信我们就来听听这些人是怎么说的。Insert- It took me four times to pass my driving test and I think if I hadnt passed onthe fourth time, I would have just given up because I thought it was so difficult Icouldnt bear it any longer.- Oh my driving test, well, I passed on my second attempt.- Well for me, it took me seven times to pass the driving test but Im not theworst, my Dad took eleven times.Lily: Well, Im not surprised because most people I know didnt pass thefirst time, thats for sure.Sun Chen: 没错，我觉得在考驾照这方面，英国的标准可是出了名的高。UK is probablythe most difficult country to get a driving licence!Lily: But you know there is a strong reason for the UK to keep theirstandard high. Peter Burton is the assistant chief driving examiner,He said its extremely important to keep the testing standard high.InsertIn todays road and traffic conditions, things are getting more and more difficult.There are currently three and half thousand people a year being killed and wecertainly dont want to lower any standards and add to that.Sun Chen: 听他这么一说，我觉得就是难点儿也是有情可原。可别忘了，每年有差不多三千五百人就是在公路的交通事故上丧生的。Lily: You can also say that three and a half thousand people die in trafficaccidents each year.Sun Chen: So they wouldnt lower any standards. 就是“降低标准”。Lily: In fact the UK has tightened their procedures since 1996.Sun Chen: 反而考驾照的过程还是越来越严格。Listen to Peter Burton again.InsertThe test was changed in 1996 and we actually split off the theory test part of thetest into a separate test. Iinterviewed an experienced driving instructor, Ken Watson.InsertHi, my names Ken Watson. Im a driving instructor for seven years. I workedfor the largest company in Britain. The first thing you need to do is to apply for aprovisional licence. You fill in the form, supply two photographs, pay the fee andsend it off to the DVLA, who then issue you with a provisional driving licence.Sun Chen: 考驾照的第一步就是先要申请一个实习驾照。Lily: Yes, you need to apply for a provisional licence. You need to fill in aform, supply two photographs and pay the fee.Sun Chen: 你还得填写一张申请表，还要附上两张照片和手续费。Lily: Once the DVLA has received all these they will issue a provisionallicence. Can you explain DVLA in Chinese, Sun Chen?Sun Chen: Sure. DVLA 就是司机和车辆登记处, 就有点像中国的交管局。Lily: And the minimum age is 17. That is a legal requirement. Once youget your provisional driving licence you can start taking drivinglessons and thats where the real excitement starts, I suppose?Sun Chen: 那是当然！不过要是到了驾驶课的这个阶段，这个可就跟中国太不一样了。在中国，我们都是在驾校学开车。但是在英国，你从摸车的第一天开始就直接上路了。Lily: You are right Sun Chen. So you have to face a real life situation.Listen to Ken again.InsertYes, you are actually on the road. Youre actually on the road with other traffic other pedestrians, buses, lorries and cyclists.- So its a real life situation?Real life situation.Sun Chen: 不过这个听起来对那些一丁点开车经验都没有的初学者来说，可是真有点较劲！Real life situation, 要的就是这种真实的驾驶感受。Lily: With pedestrians, lorries and cyclists all on the road.Sun Chen: 行人pedestrians, 还有lorries 火车，更多的还有好多骑车的人cyclists。InsertYes, we have a booklet called the Highway Code which contains all the rules andregulations of the road. It has signs, markings, the rules of the road and thethings that the drivers should do.Lily: The Highway Code is the ultimate guide that drivers must follow.Sun Chen: 交通公路标识是每个驾驶员都必须要遵守的准则。Lily: You must learn by heart the signs, markings and rules of the road.Sun Chen: 有这种各样的标志、划线，还有道路交通的法规。Lily: So you learn the Highway Code and take driving lessons. Then,when you think you are ready, you can take the theory test.Sun Chen: 英国驾照的笔试有两个部分，我们来让Ken 给我们说说。InsertThe theory test is in two parts. One is you get 35 questions you have to answer30 out of 35 to pass that part. And the second part is the new part the hazardperception test, where you sit in front of a computer and they run video clips andyou have to watch out for developing and potential hazards.
