As a matter of fact, it was damaging his health, wealth and relationships seriously during these years. He tried a lot of ways to cut it down and even banned himself from drinking. However, he failed one after another. Slowly he discovered the truth about alcohol addiction. All the lies he had believed before started to fall apart. For the first time he noticed that he didnt want to drink anymore. After he stopped drinking, he helped more people stop drinking too much. He began to be regarded as “The Stop Drinking Expert”. Then Craig Beck published books about how to stop drinking, which have been translated into many different languages and continue to be among the best-selling books around the world. Craig Beck proudly shows people that this is not a case of having to force himself not to drink. There is no willpower required by his stopping drinking system and people simply find that they no longer want to drink any more. A lot of people who read his books at first think the news is too good to be true, but they find that the old saying “No pains, no gains” does not apply here. This is why his method is regarded by thousands as the best treatment for stopping drinking in the world. The Alcohol Lied to Me - How to Stop Drinking method is unique. No need to say yourself an alcoholic. A permanent cure, not a lifetime struggle. No group meetings or expensive rehab. No pain and 100% no willpower needed. We have a question: If you did not sing Happy Birthday to You or blow out the candles, would the cake taste any different? Theres actually very little research into the effects that rituals have on our lives. Recently Francesca Gino and Kathleen Vohs have just completed the first strict study on the effects that rituals have on eating. They ran a series of experiments. In one of them, they gave volunteers chocolate bars and asked some of the volunteers to perform a ritual. They told the other volunteers to eat the chocolate bars exactly as they would like. When people engaged in rituals very simple rituals we saw that, in fact, what they tasted was more flavorful, they enjoyed it for longer and they would be willing to pay a higher price for what they just ate. They ran the same experiment with carrots, and they found the same thing happened. So across the board, rituals seem to increase expectation and make people more mindful of what they are eating. So the researchers said, “Is it possible that its just performing some kind of physical activity before you eat that makes the difference?” They had people perform random physical gestures, and they found that didnt make any difference. They also found that watching someone else perform a ritual did not have any effect. You had to do it. And it was doing the ritual every single time that gave the ritual its power. This is fascinating, because, of course, we have rituals in all areas of life. People have morning habits. They have evening habits. There are habits of religion. We could go on and on. In sports, for example, rituals soothe (抚慰) us, and calm us down. After suffering a personal loss, performing a ritual helps you regain a sense of control.31. The researchers conducted experiments aiming to find _.A. why people like ritualsB. what makes rituals specialC. when rituals should be performedD. what effects rituals have on eating32. According to the researchers, rituals make people _.A. willing to buy anything at any priceB. prefer to choose more flavorful foodC. focus on what they are eatingD. expect to receive more gifts33. Rituals have power only when _.A. they reflect mental activitiesB. they include physical gesturesC. people watch rituals carefullyD. people perform rituals themselves34. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _.A. rituals are sometimes helpful in sportsB. habits of religion are very fascinatingC. rituals can help us form good habitsD. rituals return what we have lost to us35. The author introduces the theme of the passage by _.A. giving an example B. presenting experimentsC. making suggestions D. quoting an old sayingCFor professional athletes, its all about training, speed, strength and endurance. Its no different for the homing pigeons the flying athletes, but theyre not going for the gold with every race. They just want to go home. When you walk into Mike Beavers pigeon room, youll hear the happy coo from his flock of homing pigeons. Beavers raises and races these birds near Kingsley, Iowa, USA. “Most people dont believe me,” says Beavers. “They ask, How do you do that Then once I start explaining it, it really catches their interest to some extent and they say, Wow, thats pretty awesome.” His love for the birds took off when he was a kid and hes spent the past 30 years building his team of racing pigeons. Its a family hobby. “I got out of it for a few years and after I got married, my daughter came along and it was something that she and I could do together because I dont shop,” says Beavers. Beavers has about 150 birds, but these arent ordinary pigeons. Theyre born to race and conditioned to travel long distances, and they have the instinct to always return home no matter where they are. “They come back because this is home,” says Beavers. “This is where they were born and raised and its just their instinct to go home. Nobody even really knows the reason. Its one of natures secrets and nobody has found it yet.” These pigeons are kind of like flying GPS. Thats what makes them so special. If you find a wild pigeon under a bridge and take it out 100 miles away, it is just going to find the closest bridge and thats going to be its new home. It is the instinct that is bred into these birds over centuries and centuries.36. What do most people think of Beavers explanation?A. Boring but acceptable.B. Interesting and acceptable.C. Surprising and unacceptable.D. Understandable but unacceptable.37. It can be inferred from the passage that Beavers _.A. doesnt go shopping because of her daughterB. has raised homing pigeons for three decadesC. shares this pigeon-raising hobby with his daughterD. has never stopped raising homing pigeons since young.38. According to the passage, Beavers pigeons _.A. can find their way home wherever they areB. are ordinary but well-trained birdsC. are trained to know how to return homeD. can only travel a very short distance39. The homing pigeons can fly back home because _.A. they are well trainedB. they have the instinctC. they are equipped with GPSD. they dont travel long distances40. What is the passage mainly about?A. A man who raises and races homing pigeons and his pigeons.B. A man and his advice on how to raise and race homing pigeons.C. The comparison between homing pigeons and other pigeons.D. The encouragement for people to find the secrets of homing pigeons.DA man named Rick finally got to experience what Mothers Day felt like this year, thanks to 13 little ducks that thought he was their mother and followed him around all day. The unusual story began when the mother of the young chicks disappeared soon after laying the eggs. In order to save them, Rick, who would not tell his last name or location, decided to place them in an incubator. Therefore, when the chicks hatched, the first large moving object they saw was Rick and they immediately concluded that he was their “mother”. While this may seem odd, it is quite common among animals. Known as imprinting, it is a natural biological phenomenon that occurs in newly born birds and mammals, allowing them to form a bond with their mothers as well as providing them with information about their own identity. For birds like ducks, geese and turkeys that start walking as soon as they hatch, the imprint occurs instantly, which is what happened in this case. Whats amazing is that researchers have discovered that young birds imprint themselves to the first moving thing they set eyes on, even if it is a lifeless object. During their study they found young chicks attach themselves to gumboots, balls and even an electric train. The downside of imprinting is that young animals have a hard time separating themselves from their adopted “mothers”. That means that they are often unable to return to the wild or socialize with their own species. This is the reason why researchers use new methods when raising animals in captive breeding programs. At California and Arizonas Condor Recovery Project, the caretakers use hand puppets shaped like condors (秃鹰) to raise the chicks, while researchers at the Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center in Western China are dressed in panda suits to raise the severely endangered animals. Rick is planning to keep his young “kids” around for a while. Once they get a little older, he plans to take them over to a neighborhood lake where they will hopefully learn to mingle with their own kind.41. The underlined word “incubator” in Paragraph 1 is probably a _.A. place where ducks can playB. device to observe duck eggsC. device to help eggs hatchD. place where chicks can rest42. What do we know about imprinting?A. It only occurs in newly born birds.B. It is an unusual biological phenomenon.C. It usually takes a few days for it to occur in ducks.D. It allows newly born ducks to bond with their mothers.43. What researchers have discovered shows that _.A. birds are much smarter than people used to think they would beB. birds usually cannot recognize their babies after they are hatchedC. it is easy for young birds to mistake someone else for their mothers D. it is impossible for a bird to consider a much larger thing to be its mother44. What do the two examples given in Paragraph 4 show?A. Young adopted animals have difficulty in leaving their adopted “mothers”.B. Young adopted animals have difficulty in socializing with their own species. C. Imprinting allows researchers to use innovative methods to raise animals. D. Imprinting allows researchers to prevent endangered animals from dying out.45. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Some newly born ducks had no idea who their mother was.B. A man became the mother of some baby ducks on Mothers Day.C. Scientists found that animals know nothing about their mothers.D. Imprinting caused baby ducks to believe that a man was their mother.第二节 信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)下面是一些应用文及其应用场合的信息,请阅读下列应用文和相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。首先请阅读下列有关少年作家的照片及简介:AName: Francie HeinsenIntroduction: ten years old; an Australian; living on a farm; liking nature, animals, cooking and reading books; writing Diamonds at the Barnyard, which is about childrens friendshipBName: Keeaundra HammillIntroduction: another name “Kiki”; enjoying writing, singing, acting and dancing; writing her first book I Hate Eating Broccoli!, which is about the unhealthy eating diet; staring writing when she was nineCName: Shannon PagelIntroduction: twelve years old; an Australian child. writer, enjoying reading and art, especially being interested in drawing; writing The Lost Dimension, which is about a magic place with mythical creaturesDName: Victoria WiebeIntroduction: starting writing when she was eight; an up-and-coming Canadian author; liking reading and writing; writing her first novel Continuum; having written three books; being popular with her readersEName: Faith BeatonIntroduction: twelve years old; Canadian; starting writing stories when she was five; dreaming of being a published author; enjoying reading and writing; writing a new book Popularity Rulez, which is about the growth of a girlFName: Morgan SuttonIntroduction: an American teenager; liking skating, climbing and music; good at playing some instruments very much; enjoying drinking cocoa while writing; hoping to write a number of books in the future 以下为五位少年作家的生平与成才经历。请将他们与相关的简介匹配起来。46.
