I glanced his way for a moment but took him for a beggar and walked on along with the crowds of people hurrying to work. (Line 2, Para. 1)hurrying 是现在分词作定语 hurry to do sth. 表示匆匆忙忙做某事。 e.g They were hurrying to catch the train.2. On my way home that afternoon, I saw the same man in the same place, lying on the ground. (Line 1, Para. 2)lying 是现在分词做状语 我又遇到一位老人躺在人行道上。I again came across an old man lying on the footpath. 3. What a shame!英语感叹句的表现形式主要有两种, 即:1. What +形容词+名词(+主语+谓语)!2. How +形容词 (副词)(+ 主语+谓语)!漂亮的女孩啊!What a beautiful girl (she is)!What beautiful girls (they are)!4. This sick, old man must have suffered from the coldness for the whole day while sitting on the hard, uncomfortable ground. (Line 1, Para. 3)这位生病的老人一定整日都坐在这坚硬、冰冷的地上,在严寒中忍受着煎熬。while sitting on the hard, uncomfortable ground 是连词 while+分词短语做时间状语,这种结构的逻辑主语必须与主句的主语一致。这里相当于从句省略了 he was。 must have done表示必定做了某事,是对过去发生事情的肯定推测。e.g. 工人们一定是干了个通宵,因为他们已经完成了任务。The workers must have worked overnight since they had finished the task. 5. Caught up in the familiar flow of people, I barely glanced at him. (Line 1, Para. 3)人群像往常一样川流不息,我几乎看不到他,caught 是过去分词作状语be / get caught up in sth. 表示被卷入某事,陷入某事 (尤指坏事)。e.g. 我不想卷入这无休止的争论。I dont want to get caught up in the endless arguments.6. He regained consciousness, though weakly, and told me he was diabetic and it might be a good idea to call an ambulance, which I didit was only a few minutes away. (Line 2, Para. 5)though: conj. 可是,不过,然而(用于主句后,引接补充说明)e.g. The rooms are small, though not unsuitable. which I did 是非限定性定语从句,补充说明前一句内容。 e.g. He admires Mrs. Brown, which surprises me. 7. Fighting back tears, I asked him his name.我强忍泪水,问他的名字。fighting 是现在分词作状语。 fight back: to try very hard not to show sbs feelings 克制,忍住,压下去 e.g. 让她把怒火压下去很难。It was difficult for her to fight back her anger.8. Looking into his eyes, I read the mind of a proud man who didnt like what was happening to him. 我凝视着他的眼睛,明白这个充满自尊的男人内心不愿这样的事发生在他身上。looking 是现在分词作状语。 what happens to sb. / sth 意为“某人/某事发生什么事情e.g. I am not sure what happen to him. 9. Still, I felt my heart aching for the Winter Man and for the shame that I had almost walked past another person in need. (Line 5, Para. 6)我的内心仍为那位冬日老人疼痛着,也为我差点错过另一位急需帮助的人而感到羞愧.aching 为现在分词,和宾语 my heart 构成复合宾语。 现在分词在某些动词后面可构成复合宾语,这类动词有 keep,leave,see,smell,notice 等。 e.g. I see him passing my house every day.I smelt something burning. I found a man standing at the door.the shame后面跟了that 引导的同位语从句来说明the shame 的内容,相同用法的单词还有message,idea,report,opinion,conclusion,belief,thought, fact 等。 e.g. We received a message that he would be absent.They dont like the idea that all the students should attend the lecture.The report that it was going to rain was right.The fifth periodWhile-reading Activities (45mins)Detailed Study of the Text Difficult vocabulary: 1. glance 1) vi. to quickly look (at / over/ through) sb. or sth. 一瞥, 迅速看一眼,扫视 e.g. 他匆匆看完了信。He glanced over / through the letter.2) n. quick look (at / into / over) 一瞥,匆匆一看,扫视 她浏览了一下报纸大标题。She took a glance at the newspaper headlines. 2. crowd1) n. a large group of people in a public place 群,人群 愤怒的人群聚集在王宫外的台阶上。An angry crowd had gathered on the steps of the palace. 2) n. the masses; people in general 群众,大众,老百姓 他是一个深受百姓敬仰的领导人。He was a leader deeply respected by the crowd. 3) vi. come together in a crowd 群集,聚集 People crowded round the scene of the accident.4) vi. fill a (space) with 挤,涌;塞满,挤满 往事一齐涌入我的脑海。Memories crowded in upon me. 3. flow1) n. (single only) a continuous movement of sth. from one place to another (仅用单数)川流不息的运动他站在天桥上注视着川流不息的车辆行人。He stood on the over-bridge watching the flow of traffic.2) vi. move along or over as a river does; (of hair, etc.) hang down loosely 流,流动,涌流;(头发等)飘垂Their conversation flowed easily.4. consciousnessn. the condition of being awake and understanding what is happening 知觉;神志清醒 Charlie fell down the stairs and lost consciousness查理从楼梯上摔下来失去了知觉。-ness 是名词后缀,加在形容词后,如:happy happiness,kind kindness 派生词:conscious adj. 清醒的,有知觉的5.mindn. what sb. thinks or feels; way of thinking; conscious thoughts; feeling; decision 心思,情绪,精神,想法,主意,决定常用搭配:read sbs mind (or thoughts): 看出某人的心思 make up sbs mind: 作出决定;下定决心 change sbs mind: 改变某人的主意The teacher is so clever that he can read each students mind.I wish youd make your mind up whether youre coming or not.Lisa finally changed her mind and went home.6. in needthe state of not having help, advice, money etc, because sb. is in a difficult situation 在困难时,在危难中患难朋友才是真正的朋友。A friend in need is a friend indeed.衍伸The refugees were in instant need of help.短语:in need of 有的需要,有的必要 难民需要紧急救助。7. amazedadj. very surprised 使大为惊奇,使惊愕他对这个城镇的巨大变化表示吃惊。He was amazed to discover how much the town had changed.我对他能得到这个职位感到很意外。I am amazed that he should get the post.派生词:amazement n. 惊奇,惊诧 amazed adj. 十分惊奇的,吃惊的 amazing adj. 使人十分惊奇的,令人吃惊的The sixth periodAfter-reading Activities (45mins)Grammar Auxiliary verbs (助动词) 助动词本身无词义,不单独使用,它可在句中帮助实义动词构成各种时态、语态、语气、否定句和疑问句。基本的助动词有三个:have (has /had), be (is /am/are/was/were/ been)和 do (does/did)。类别1.助动词 have的用法 2.助动词 be的用法 3.助动词 do的用法 助动词 have 的用法 构成完成时和完成进行时 e.g. 1) I had met him before I went to New York.2) Lee has been playing tennis for 10 years.助动词 be 的用法 1 构成进行时 e.g. 1) I am listening to a Beethoven symphony (交响乐). 2) I will be working in that company next year. 2 构成被动语态 e.g. 1) I was told that my teacher w
