Describe your observations of gender differences in Chinese society.,Listening,Book 3-Unit 8,Pre-listening Discussion,(A story from a senior academic in his 70s) In my hometown which is a small village, men and women used to be very different in the social roles that they played. Men were supposed to make money to support the family and to represent the household. Women, in contrast, should stay at home to manage the household work, and look after the children and husband. The life of women was strictly restricted to the home. If the family invited a guest to a dinner, the husband would eat with the guest in the hall, but the wife and children usually ate in the kitchen. Now times have changed. Men and women tend to share the responsibilities of both supporting the family working on the farm. Therefore, women can enjoy many things that used to be the privilege to men in the old days.,Book 3-Unit 8,Example:,Listening,Listen to “Women and Society” and Task 1:Write down one of the examples of the sexist language Mr. Wright gives.Write down one of the ideas held by some men which Mr. Wright thinks is “nonsense”.Task 2: Why doesnt Mr. Wright think that it is an enlightened age as it is supposed to be?According to Mr. Wright, what would happen if women were in control of international negotiations? And why?,Book 3-Unit 8,Book 3-Unit 8,The following words in the recordingmay be new to you:sexist language: the use of words/phrases that reflect the inequalities between men and women, e.g. the human race is referred to as mankind, or the person in charge of a board of directors is called Chairman of the Board, even when this is a woman. And everybody loves his family. (People tend to use his for both men and women in this type of situation.)enlightened age: characterized by modern, and civilized attitudes toward life,1. Write down one of the examples of the sexist language Mr. Wright gives. The word “men” in “All men are created equal” is used to include women.Or: “He” is sometimes used to include “she”. Or: The use of “Mrs.” Or “Miss” to indicate the marital status of women while “Mr.” can cover both married and single men, keeping the same name. Or: The use of “Kingdom” but not “Queendom” when a Queen is ruling.,Book 3-Unit 8,Reference Answers,Task 1,2. Write down one of the ideas held by some men which Mr. Wright thinks is “nonsense”.There are many jobs women cant do, or cant do well.Or: Women are unreliable and irrational.Or: Women depend too little on cool reasoning and too much on intuition and instinct to arrive at decisions.Or: Women are not capable of thinking clearly.,Book 3-Unit 8,1. Why dont Mr. Wright think that it is an enlightened age as it is supposed to be? Mr. Wright believes that sex discrimination still exists and men still carry on a gender war against women. Some men look down on women as they continue to regard women as second-rate citizens.,Book 3-Unit 8,Task 2,2. According to Mr. Wright, what would happen if women were in control of international negotiations? And why? According to Mr. Wright, there would be more peace and fewer wars if women were in control of international negotiations because women are more peace loving than men.,Listening Script,Book 3-Unit 8,Speaking,Task 1 Group discussionTask 2 Story tellingTask 3 Picture description,Book 3-Unit 8,Task 1 Social Equality and Inequality,Do husbands and wives treat each other as equals today?Do people have equal rights/pay/opportunities in society?Has the womens liberation movement succeeded in achieving equal rights for women?Should leading positions in society be filled equally by men and women?,Work in groups and ask each other questions about social equality and inequality, such as:,Book 3-Unit 8,Task 2 Truth or Fantasy?,Suggestion 1 Women and men should have equal status in society.Equal status: Equal pay for equal work; equal opportunities for men and women,Work in groups and prepare a short story about social orsex inequality. You may use the following suggestions.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 2There is a trend towards equal opportunities to men and women in China.Equal opportunities: More and more girls and boys have equal opportunities to go to school.People get paid according to their contribution or work, not according to their sex.More and more females are promoted to management and leadership positions.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 3 Educating children is also considered to be a respected profession for the family, and hence for the country. Educating children: Mothers are usually better teachers for children than fathers because they are more caring. (Men can be caring too! Be careful not to discriminate against men either.) Mothers are the first teachers of their children. The future of a nation lies in the education of the younger generation. Most of the great people in history attribute their success to the care and love of their parents during their childhood.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 4 The battle for equal rights for women is not yet over. Battle for equal rights for women: Many girls still think they cannot be equal to men in abilities and opportunities because of the influence of traditional thinking. Many women think that the best place for them is in the home. In many businesses women tend to have less chance to be promoted than men. (Glass ceiling phenomenon),Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 5 A good education should not be just a privilege of the rich. A privilege of the rich: The poor families often keep their children at home. The rich send their children to best schools or hire best teachers for their children while the poor ask their daughters to work for the family. The poor sometimes do not believe in the role of education. They want their children to make money first to support the family.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 6 Many women are victims of sex discrimination at some time in their working lives. Sex discrimination: Fewer promotions are available for women. Most CEOs are men. There is a glass ceiling for women in the business circle.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 7 The sexual division of labor confines women to the family. Sexual division of labor: Traditional views: Women are weaker than men and therefore shouldnt conduct heavy physical labor. Women should remain seated, or conduct only light exercise on the job. Some jobs are not suitable for women. E.g. flying a plane, driving a car, etc., some jobs are more suitable for women than men. E.g. nurse, caretaker, baby-sitter, housekeeper, etc.,Book 3-Unit 8,Suggestion 8 Sexual inequality exists, to some extent, in every society. Sexual inequalities can be found in Eastern and Western worlds, modern or more traditional, in developed and less developed societies.,Book 3-Unit 8,Task 3: Picture Description,Which country do you think the woman lives in?What does she long for? What prevents her from getting it?What about her husband and children?Do they support her decision to go out to work?If she goes out to work, who is to look after the family and children? What do you think the family should do?Give the cartoon a caption.,Look at the picture in Section 3C on page 107 and speculate on,Book 3-Unit 8,Present your argument with introduction (for ones thesis statement), development (giving supporting details and analysis) and a conclusion (emphasizing ones point again),Book 3-Unit 8,Book 3-Unit 8,Return to Menu,Reading Comprehension,Part II,Book 3-Unit 8,Pre-reading TaskComprehension WorkLanguage Work,Reading Comprehension,Book 3-Unit 8,Return to Menu,Discuss 1.
