Apollo was handsome and intelligent indeed, but he was not romantic at all. Unlike his fortunate father, who always won in the field of love, with all his glory, Apollo often failed to win the hearts of nymphs1) and mortals. Apollo and Daphne2) Apollo was a proud god. With his manly figure and handsomeness and intelligence, and with his victory over the great serpent3)Python, he came to despise4) the god of loveEros, who was playing with his weapons. Apollo said to Eros, What are you doing with these warlike weapons, saucy5) boy? Leave them for hands worthy of them. Eros was offended, he answered, Your arrows may strike all things else, Apollo, but mine shall strike you. With these words, Eros shot Apollo with an arrow that caused him to fall in love with a beautiful nymph named Daphne, the daughter of the river god Peneus, but shot Daphne with an arrow which caused her to flee6) from Apollo. As a result, as soon as Daphne saw Apollo, she would run as fast as she could. The quick footed maiden made the best of her legs, but the passionate Apollo pressed hard upon7) her. Through rough fields and pathless woods she ran, but the sound of his pursuing feet ever grew nearer. As Apollo ran he begged his beloved maiden to slow down, for he feared that she might fall and hurt her sparkling skin on the rocky roads. But the escaping maiden never cared so much about that. She did not even throw one glance backwards. At last she was quite breathless and cried to her father for help. No sooner had her prayer been realized than answered, for she had instantly found herself glued to the ground and a layer of soft bark growing over her fair skin. She had been turned into a laurel tree. Sighing, Apollo put his arms around the tree trunk, and the trunk responded by turning thinner. However, Apollos passion did not cease8), he cried out, Certainly you could not be my love, but at least you could be my tree! To show his undying love for the maiden, he decided that the laurel would be one of his favorite trees and should be the prize of honor and fame for deathless poets and poetry. Thus the most outstanding poet always desires to be made a poet laureate. Apollo and Cassandra9) Daphne was not the only one who refused this brilliant god. Cassandra, the daughter of King Priam10) of Troy, was not interested in him neither, but she made a bargain with him. She would agree to his love and honey words, if he would make her a prophetess11). Apollo agreed. But the girl ate her words as soon as her goal was reached. This made Apollo angry, so he demanded a final kiss from the girl and the girl complied12) this time. Using this chance, Apollo spat13) into her mouth and cursed her, You may still have the power of prophesy, but no one would ever believe you. This is the reason why when we watch the movie Troy, Cassandra the princess clearly saw the future of Troy, but no one listened to her and dragged her out. Apollo and Marpessa Another girl Apollo chased in vain was Marpessa, who was the only daughter of King Evenus. She was noble and graceful. When Apollo fell in love with Marpessa, she had already been engaged to Idas, son of Poseidon. Therefore, Apollo stole Marpessa from Idas. Idas ran after Apollo, feeling quite ready to fight and die for his love. Apollo held his inescapable arrows. Idas went forward with his sword. The duel14) was about to start when suddenly they heard a thunder bolt round about, and Zeus himself arrived to stop the unequal contest. He gave the maiden the choice between immorality and eternal glory on one side and on the other a mortal life of faithful love mixed with endless cares and grief. Marpessa turned down the sweet promises of Apollo and chose Idas, with a very simple but convincing reason that being a god, Apollo would one day leave her and fell in love with others, while Idas, being a mortal, at least would be growing old with her. Apollo left in sad spirits. Apollo and Coronis As a lover of Apollo, Coronis was unfaithful to him. Apollos bird, a white raven15), revealed Coronis infidelity16) to him. Artemis, Apollos twin sister, killed the girl. Coronis was already pregnant, when she was placed upon a funeral pyre17) to be burned, Apollo felt sorrow for his unborn son and saved the child Asclepius from his mothers body, saving him from death. Apollo then handed Asclepius to the Centaur18) Chiron19) to teach. Still in a rage, Apollo turned the ravens feathers into black for not stopping it in time, and put it into the sky, which then became the constellation20) Corvus21).
