Difficulties in Learning EnglishQ1: What is the most difficult part in learning English?Q2: Why do you think it is difficult?Q3: What is the part you are best at in learning English? Q4: What advice can you offer to others who have trouble within this aspect?Text AWhat Can a Good Language Teacher Teach Us?Abstract: This text introduces four language learning strategies which a good language learner may use: to take opportunities to use the language, to practice what has been learned, to try anything in order to get the message across and to live with uncertainty. Hopefully, you can learn from them and improve your English proficiency. What makes a language learner an effective acquirer of a foreign language? What methods and approaches do they use that enable them to become fluent more quickly than the average language learners? What can we learn from their techniques that we can pass on to other language learners? They take and create opportunities to use the language. Many language learners avoid using the language in the early stages for fear of a breakdown in communication. The good language learner, on the other hand, uses the language at every available opportunity. They are forever seeking out opportunities both to use and to hear the language, e.g. chatting with storekeepers (rather than just purchasing the goods they have gone there to buy). They practice what they have just acquired. Many language learners practice in class, but few practice enough outside the classroom. The good language learners practice what they have just learnt as soon as possible. For example, while on bus or bicycle, they are going through in their minds what they have recently learnt in class by holding an imaginary conversation with someone. They are willing to try anything in order to get their message across. Many language students, if they dont know the correct word or phrase for what they wish to communicate, simply avoid the subject completely or use Chinese. They good language learners, possessing such a strong desire to communicate, are willing to try out different ways in order to get their message across. They are willing to live with uncertainty. The average language learners, when hearing something which they dont understand, often feel embarrassed and may try to change to another topic of conversation. The good language learners do not give up so easily. They are able to overcome their initial feelings of uneasiness, and in fact, may even enjoy it - seeing it as a game to be played. They hazard a guess as to what the meaning might be, trying out their hunches by asking suitable questions which they hope will shed light on the matter. The good language learners use all the clues which the context of the conversation offers them. And they are content to rest with a general conclusion as to what the meaning might be, knowing that everything will clarify itself later. English words in particular stem from Latin or Greek and as such, many of their meanings can be traced back directly to those original languages. A vocabulary quiz gives everyone a chance to try out their knowledge of the language and is a useful tool to improve language skills. Of course, these days, many slang expressions have come in from the type of language that we use in day-to-day life. For example, some of the ruder phrases in the language. These stem from Anglo-Saxon times and probably have nothing to do with the meanings that we have for them today. Even well-known sayings spring from what was normal for the time that they are coined. For example, who had heard of the expression “three square meals a day”? This actually came from ships of old where plates were made from timber. Each plat was a square piece of wood, hence the “three square meals” saying that still exists today. For those who want to improve their language skills, finding out about the origin of the language can help tremendously. It is sometimes quite easy to figure out the meaning of some of the individual parts of the language just by splitting it into several pieces. This is called working out the root and will give the students a good start in learning or expanding their language skills. For others, challenging themselves with competitions is probably the fastest way to work out and learn the language. Everyone learns better when they are rushed to think of a word without hesitation. Family groups will also benefit from this type of game where everyone must choose a letter and then write down things in specific catego
