What can one do to still the mind? ” The teacher looked at the disciple, smiled and told him a story:An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly(苍蝇) came, flying and buzzing(嗡嗡叫) near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away once more. This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why cant you stay for a while in one place? ”The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly in all directions and I cannot resist(抵抗) themWhat is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still?”The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention. Whatever I do, I get immersed in it. Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed(全神贯注的) in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew it better. I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around. ” Upon hearing these words, a smile appeared on the disciples face, “I understand! If my five senses are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. He went fishing with his father on an island in the middle of a lake. On the day before the bass(鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing in the evening. When the boy skillfully pulled the fish on the bank, his father watched with admiration. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10p.m. two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “Youll have to put it back, son, ” he said. “Dad! ” cried the boy. “There will be other fish, ” said the father. “ Not as big as this one, ” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy knew his father wouldnt change the decision. He slowly put the fish into the black water and it disappeared. That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His fathers cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock. Now he knows his father is right.
