ConsequentlyI. abilityJ. maintainThere is no doubt that people and even highly educated adults vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to go back. Poor readers in particular may lack the _41_ to vary their pace in reading. A great reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or _42_ light reading materials. He may be able to skim a page, _43_ a word or two here and there, and gain a _44_ idea what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult materials, with the intension of taking in the whole of it, he proceeds more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, _45_ on the key words and passages and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader, however, tends to _46_ the same speed whatever materials he reads. _47_, even light reading materials require special concentration at difficult points. A type of reading which requires careful attention to _48_ is proofreading (校对), in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, extreme practice is required to _49_ this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning on the text. III. Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.By now, how the immune system (免疫系统) is affected by stress has been discovered. In one study 50 500 couples, those who showed very unfriendly behaviour during a 30-minute discussion about marriage problems had lower immune functioning for 24-hour period following the experiment than people who showed less 51 behaviour. It is not just stress that can do damage. One researcher thought that 52 the same cold virus was put under two different noses, the person who is depressed or 53 would be more likely to develop the cold. How can stress and related emotions contribute to poor health? These feelings can cause the 54 of substances that damage or weaken our immune cells. Negative 55 can also cause our bodies to produce fewer substances that 56 help fight off disease. If stress, depression, anger and other negative feelings can make you more likely to get sick, can the 57 be true? Will you have a stronger immune 58 and greater health if you are happier, less stressed? Experts believe that the answer is yes. There are studies showing that by 59 certain mind-body techniques that help reduce stress and improve outlook, cancer patients can live longer. And cancer patients arent the only ones who can 60 . Research has found that when patients with chronic pain used 61 therapies and other techniques to 62 discomfort, they reduced their visits to the doctors by 36%. Relaxation produces better health through deep rhythmic breathing, muscle 63 and a slower heart rate. When some of the pressure is taken out of the body, the entire immune system will function much better. Relaxation decreases blood pressure and heart rate. That is important because a body that is 64 under pressure will eventually exhaust.50. A. interferingB. involvingC. inquiringD. inspecting51. A. negativeB. confidentC. acceptableD. agreeable52. These seem to be the most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help. However, its far from enough. Ladies and gentlemen, weve got to come up with some better ideas to help them.I was very surprised, then, when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it is covered in rubber so that it is very strong and wont be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle so that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when needed. These special laptop computers will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the childrens education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving childrens education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK, and, probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them. In this way we will be able to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to “kill two birds with one stone”, and that is always a good thing.69.Its an excellent idea to recycle old mobile phones because _.A. it reduces waste and can help othersB. it prevents waste and can earn lots of moneyC. it can send the waste produced by developed countries to other count
