It has a population of 32.8 million and covers an area of 82400 square kilometers, approximately as big as Austria. It has a jurisdiction over 17districts and 23 counties. Chongqing is one of the famous historical and cultural cities in China. About 3000 years ago, the city was the capital of Ba Kingdom and later the Ba Prefecture in Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC). It was named Yuzhou in Sui Dynasty (581AD-618AD), hence Yu for Chongqing for short up to now. It received its current name in 1189, after Prince Zhao Dun of the Southern Song Dynasty described his crowning as King and then Emperor as a “double happy celebration”. Hence, he used “Chongqing” to mark the occasion.Chongqing itself has undergone many changes over the centuries, changes that have not been reflected in Ci Qi Kou with the consequence that the village conveys an impression of what Chongqing would have been like in the distant past. This fact has been recognized by the State Council and in 1998 Ci Qi Kou became a protected cultural site. So today we are going to Ci Qi Kou. Ci Qi Kou is situated on the bank of Jialing River, not far from its confluence with the mighty Yangtze, the ancient village of Ci Qi Kou formerly known as Longyin, covers an area of some 1.2 square kilometers (291.6 acres). And it is 1.4 kilometers to the west of Chongqing Municipality.The history of Ci Qi Kou can date back to more than 1700 years ago. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) it was famous for its production of porcelain. To date, over 20 old kiln sites have been discovered there. It was because of the importance of the porcelain industry that the name has been changed from Long Yin to Ci Qi Kou which translated means Porcelain Village. However, the village was also an important supply post for shipping on the river, a fact that explains why there are so many shops lining the twelve lanes paved with their large flag stones that form the main routes. Here you will find many outlets for craftwork, groceries and the like as well as a horologist, photography supplies, drugstores and a tempting supply of roasted nuts and seeds. It was said that once there was a huge flat stone on the top of the mountain, and a giant god was living there and always fishing in the Jialing River. He saved the peasants around there from a serious famine later. Hence, to commemorate the god, populations around there named the mountain “Fishing Mountain”; meanwhile, the city got the name the “Fishing City”. In 1982, the Fishing City was released as an attraction in the first batch of National Key Scenic Spots by the National State Council. The whole Fishing City is in the intersection of the mouth of Jialing River, Fu River and Qu River. It is no wonder that the city is around three rivers and set the dangerous and ancient majesty as a whole. A battle once took place here created a miracle and rewrote the history of the world. So the Fishing City is also called “the place where God broke his whip” and “the Eastern City of Mecca”. Well, talking about this, Id like to share a Sino-Foreign war rarely seen in history with you. Because Mongolia army wasnt familiar with the characteristics of the mountain and not used to the hot humid climate there, they ultimately failed to overcome the city and withdrew afterwards. The Khan Mongol later died in the Temple of Hot Spring at the foot of Jinyun Mountain, due to his wound caused by the fire in this war. Until then, the Mongolia army stopped their pace of occupying more lands across almost the world, including the Europe.This defensive war was concerned by many Chinese and foreign experts and scholars. Meanwhile, it leaves us a feeling of mystery attracting us to pay a visit. Maybe you are curious about why it is called the White Crane Ridge. Well there are two legends about the origin of its name. One is said that long before groups of white cranes gathered on the ridge regularly. As time went on, residents around there gradually got used to calling it “the White Cane Ridge”. Another is said that once in Tang Dynasty, a Taoist priest named Erzhu practiced here usually. Later, he successfully became immortal and rode a white crane westward the fairyland. Henceforth, the White Crane Ridge got its name.As it known to all, we are in the center of the River Civilization and river plays a vital role. Therefore China has paid much attention to the construction of hydraulic engineering since ancient times. Nevertheless, due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the White Crane Ridge is now an underwater museum. There are 108 engraved records about the Yangtze River hydrology. And those records and images spasmodically reflect 72-years low water level during 1200 years, which has made a great contribution to the research into the shipping and agricultural production of the middle and upper reach of the Yangtze. The many records engraved on the ridge are stone-fish, poems, paintings and so forth. When the stone-fish emerge above the water, it indicates a good harvest in the following year.It was on the Paris International Hydrological Work Session held in1974 that the White Crane Ridge became world-known. At the conference, the Chinese delegate launched a report titled Stone Fish Inscription of Fulin. Afterwards, the White Crane Ridge got acknowledged universally. The White Crane Ridge Museum has been accessible to the public since May 18th, 2009. We can still see some stone fish and engraved records today.
