Student-oriented communicative teaching, free discussion and interactionIV Teaching ProcedureStep 1:lead-in Activity: Watching and talkingQ1:Look at the picture and the title on page 81 and what kind of expressions do you think of?Possible answers: Maybe we will think of the following expressions: South Africa; Primitive; African tribal masks; Exotic; Reed dance; African masks are usually shaped after a human face or some animalsmuzzle;Many African societies see masks as mediators between the living world and the supernatural world of the dead, ancestors and other entities. Masks became and still become the attribute of a dressed up dancer who gave it life and word at the time of ceremonies(weddings,funerals,initiation rites). Fast -readingRead the passage as quickly as you can and answer the questions below1.What kinds of masks do the Zulu people make? How do the Zulu people name the masks? The Zulu people make masks especially for tribal festivities; and these masks are called Tribal masks; The Zulu people also make masks for personal usekeeping their deepest secrets, they name these masks “Secret masks”; the third kind of masks the Zulu people make are named “Door guardian masks”, for the Zulu people believe that these masks can prevent misfortunes, such as illness, death or familial problems2. Why do the Zulu people add minimal decoration to the so-called “true” masks? The Zulu cut and carve the masks with certain telltale symbols, such as slits under and around the almond-shaped eyes and typically over-emphasized verticality for creating a ramatically long face. Paint in “natural” colorssuch as black, brown, green and redemphasize the carvings and shapes of the mask, i.e. it is the simple lines, simple shapes, simple patterns and the least painting that make a “true” mask.Activity 2. The tribal masks of the Zulu add imagery and drama to tribal festivities. festivity n. things such as drinking, eating, or dancing that are done to celebrate a special occasion 庆典,庆祝活动 e.g. The festivities started with a procession through the town. 庆祝活动从环城游行开始。2. However, the guardian masks hold a much more important place in Zulu society and mythology than doorway charms, such as horseshoes, in the West of the United States. mythology n. set of ancient myths( 总称)神话;某文化(社会的)神话 e.g. characters from classical mythology 古典神话人物 Horseshoes: Prevalent among western peoples, horseshoes have been considered lucky, both for their healing powers(it is said that they can cure hiccups), and for their protective influence(specifically, against witches). Nowadays, the horseshoe is usually placed above doorways for good luck. There may be a lot of reasons for its popularity, but the most convincing explanation is that the horseshoe is in a horn shape and resembles the new moon. 2.
