英语阅读练习题 (1)Matt Scott, who was born with spina bifida (脊柱裂), grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where he participated in a variety of sports alongside his healthy friends. Now a member of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball team, Scott has won four national champion-ships, and has recently been selected to the Paralympic (残奥会) team for the second time. The 23-year-old college senior owes his achievements to his hard work and the support of his friends and family, who never allowed him to use his disability as an excuse. My mother was always great. Whenever I felt like giving up, she had no sympathy. She really helped me build my independence by not babying me the way other mothers would have, Scott says. It was Scotts independent nature and strong will, along with his on-the-court skills, that attracted the attention of Americas most influential sports apparel (衣服) company, Nike. Nike was searching for an athlete with a disability to represent its Just Do It trademark. A handful of superstar athletes with disabilities came to audition for the role, but the company picked Scott to star in the 30-second commercial. I think that they were looking for the prettiest face in America, and found me, Scott jokes about the selection process. After being picked, Scott flew to California to film the commercial with Oscar-winning documentary director Errol Morris. However, the truth is much more difficult to understand than that. In any case, Darwins theory of evolution and natural selection had the greatest influence in history. In The Darwin Myth, author Benjamin Wiker offers a full-side analysis of Darwins theories as well as the social, scientific, and religious effect of his work. Scientists often attack traditional theory and cause debates that will last for generations. Still no scientist has fuelled more debates than Charles Darwin. To some he is the revolutionary father of evolution. To others his theory of evolution unconsciously contradicts many ideas in modern eugenics (优生学) in many ways. In The Darwin Myth: The Life and Lies of Charles Darwin, author Benjamin Wiker will make them clear. Contents So who is Charles Darwin? What did he really believe and what did his research really prove? In this book, Benjamin Wiker cuts through the myths and sets the record straight. In The Darwin Myth, Wiker tells us: * How Darwin set out to create a godless theory of evolution;* Why many of his best friends criticized Darwins theory, and why he never defended himself;* Why Darwins theory in a certain way supported slavery, an institution(制度)he hated;* How much of what we know about Darwin comes from his Autobiography, in which the key points are completely misleading. If you buy two copies of The Darwin My that a time, how much should you pay?A. $55.90. But now California has a new program called the Digital Textbook Project, and it has become the first state in the United States to provide schools with digital textbooks. Recently Governor Arnold listed reasons why digital textbooks make sense. They can contain the latest information, and make schoolbags lighter. They save paper and trees, and make learning more interesting. Finally, they can help schools with their finances. The state has had to make severe cuts in school spending because of its financial problems. Earlier this year, California invited content developers to offer digital math and science materials for high schools. These had to meet at least 90 percent of the states learning requirements. Specially trained teachers examined sixteen textbooks and approved ten of them. Six of the ten were published by the CK12 Foundation, which had been developing digital science and math books for about two years. The foundation paid teachers and other workers to write and edit textbooks, with the money coming from a group financed by the Khosla family. However, California cannot require schools to use the digital textbooks. The schools have the right to decide for themselves, and so immediate widespread use of them is not expected. Susan Martimo, a California Department of Education official, says that schools that already incorporate a lot of technology will be the first to use them, but only in addition to their traditional textbooks. School administrators (管理人员) point out that the texts may be free online, but students need a way to access them. Right now not every student has a computer. Schools could print out copies, but that would be defeating much of the purpose of having them in the first place. What is the text mainly about? A. Differences between traditional textbooks and digital ones.B. A project to encourage the use of digital textbooks in California. C. How to create digital textbooks. D. The popularity of digital textbooks. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of digital textbooks?A. They contain the latest information.B. They help decrease school costs.C. They make learning more appealing. D. They cost nothing to be made. According to the text, six of the ten digital textbooks are published by _.A. the content developers B. the Khosla family C. the CK12 Foundation D. the school administrators (4)Scrub jays (灌丛鸦) can trick you, researchers say. Monkeys kick themselves for mistakes in judgment. And at least one parrot has figured out something close to the mathematical concept of numbers. Animals can be remarkably devoted. Whats less obvious is how smart they are. In the studies over the past decades, theyve shown abilities previously thought to exist only in humans. A few years ago, Cambridge University professor Nicky Clayton found that scrub jays can be surprisingly smart, remembering not only what foods theyve hidden but where, how long ago, and whether anyone else might have noticed. If another bird was watching, theyd wait until that bird was gone and then move the food, Clayton says. Even more interesting is that not all jays protect their food that way only those that have previously stolen food from other birds. It takes a thief to know a thief, says Clayton. Another recent experiment suggests that monkeys experience regret when they make bad choices and miss out on treats. Researchers say brain scans suggest the animals have could have, would have, should have thoughts in such situations. I knew monkeys were smart, but I didnt think they were that smart, says Dr. Michael Platt, the Duke University neurobiologist who led the study. But perhaps no animal turned out to be smarter than Alex, an African gray parrot. In a 30-year research carried out by scientist Irene Pepperberg, Alex showed that parrots were not mere mimics. One afternoon, he even seemed to grasp something only humans and a few apes (猿) had been known to understand: th
