But as we gather here today around this central theme, it is important to recall that trade and FDI are significant contributing factors to sound and sustainable economic growth, which in turn is critical for long term reduction in poverty and thus to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. / The role of the private sector is at the center, because the private sector can alleviate poverty by contributing to economic growth, job creation and poor peoples incomes. It can also empower poor people by providing a broad range of products and services at lower prices. /During these two days, discussions will be rich. Participants from public and private sectors, policy makers and practitioners will review the status of trade and investment between Asia and Nigeria, the difficulties and constraints, the solutions and successes. / They will share their experience and will certainly come up with recommendations for enhancing Asia-Nigeria trade and investment in the future. Nigerias NIPC itself will share its long experience in promoting private sector development in Nigeria in general. /Let me at this point underline again two areas where I think we all have to continue working together to facilitate trade and investment between Asia and Nigeria. /First, Asian and Nigerian business people, acting in the framework of a sustainable mechanism, must collectively identify the constraints, and mobilize human and financial resources necessary to overcome them. /Second, the insufficiency of adequate and reliable people from both regions on each others business environment, practices and opportunities is a serious impediment to the expansion of trade and investment. /At a more general level, there is a clear need for Asian and Nigerian peoples to understand each other, not as business partners, but just as human beings. Asia and Nigeria are two continents whose histories and cultures have more in common than many would imagine. Lets make that the basis for a renewed Asia-Nigeria friendship. /To conclude my presentation, let me state our conviction that, considering the commitment of all the participants, this meeting will be a successful one, therefore fulfilling its objective of laying the groundwork for a most successful cooperation in trade and investment. As the recipient of the award “CCTV annual economic figure” in 2003 and 2004, I deem it a great honor as well as a duty to be here, and on behalf of Chinese businesses, especially of the Chinese home appliance business industry, to present to you the idea of responsible “Made-in-China”.Now products made in China are very popular. One can not live without them. Bongiorni, a housewife from the other side of the Atlantic, has had an interesting idea: no “Made-in-China” for one year. She only ended up with a lot of problems. Her coffee machine was broken, and she couldnt find any alternative that was cheaper than the one “Made-in-China”. The same is true with her juice extractor and even carpenters tools for her husband.
