It consists of millions of pages of data.In 1969,DARPA,a US defence organisation,developed a way for all their computers to “talk” to each other through the telephone. They created a network of computers called DARPANETFor fifteen years,only the US army could use this system of communication. Then in 1984,the US National Science Foundation (NSF) started the NSFNET network. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well.NSFNET became known as the InterNetwork,or “Internet”The World Wide Web (the web) is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the InternetAt the moment,about 80 percent of web traffic is in English,but this percentage is going down.By 2020,much web traffic could be in Chinese.The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist,Tim BernersLee.BernersLee built his first computer while he was at university using an old television5!He came up with the idea of the World Wide Web in 1989 while he was working in Switzerland.BernersLee made it possible for everyone to use the Internet,not just universities and the army. He designed the first “web browser”,which allowed computer users to access documents from other computersFrom that moment on,the web and the Internet grew. Within five years,the number of Internet users rose from 600,000 to 40 million.The Internet has created thousands of millionaires,but BernersLee is not one of them. Everyone in the world can access the Internet using his World Wide Web system. He now works as a lecturer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.Module 6 The Internet and Telecommunication: Reading Teaching Aims: Knowledge aims:1. To master the new words , phrases & sentence patterns. 2. To make the students know the definition and development of the Internet . Ability aims:1. To develop the students abilities of reading ,speaking and communication as well as cooperation.2. To get the main idea, to scan for the needed information and to grasp the details. Moral aims:To use the Internet properly and dont be addicted to playing cyber games.Key points:1. To get a general idea of the passage and some detailed information.2. To master the key words ,phrases and sentence structures. Difficult points:1. To understand the development of the Internet.2. To make the students express their idea freely.Teaching Methods Students-centered method; Task-based teaching method; Communicative teaching method; Group work and discussionTeaching Aids A computerTeaching Procedures Step RevisionRevise some words learned in the last period.Step Lead-in 1. To show some pictures about what we can do on the Internet through multimedia and play a video about the applications of the Internet.Aim: to attract the students attention, to arouse their interest in the Internet and to make them expect to learn new information about the Internet.Step Reading Task 1 To let the students read the passage in two minutes, try to find the answers of the following questions. 5mins 1What is short for “NSF”? 2When and how BernersLee built his first computer? 3.Where does Tim Berners-Lee work ? Aim: To develop the students reading skill- scanning, that is, how to look for specific words, rapid reading for the specific rather than the general; for particular details rather than the overall idea.
