It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote, “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and Im very worried about him. Can you help?”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesnt have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didnt say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the childrens drawing on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon-in complete silence and without looking at me. Its not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company(陪伴). The scientists hope their research with these mice will speed up development of a vaccine to prevent human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.Scientists from the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard are carrying out the new research.Earlier research has shown that certain individuals with HIV have immune systems that do better at controlling the AIDS virus. These individuals are commonly known as “elite controllers.” They often live longer with the virus and have fewer problems early on.Todd Allen is one of the lead writers of the new study, which was published in Science Translational Medicine.TODD ALLEN: “Some people are able to control HIV very well, to very low copies. And what we know is that they express a certain type of host genetics that dictate that they target very critical regions of the virus.”By using the new experimental mice, the researchers hope to learn what it is about the immune systems of these “elite controllers” that causes them to deal with the HIV virus better than others. The “humanized” mice were created using stem cells and tissues from human donors. Some of this tissue was taken from liver and thymus tissue. The thymus is a large gland at the bottom of the throat. It trains T-lymphocytes, or T-cells to attack unwelcome microbes, thereby protecting the body from infection. When the scientists infected the so-called “humanized” mice with the HIV virus, the T-cell reaction in the mice was the exact same as that of humans.Earlier research using rhesus monkeys helped scientists understand how the virus attacks cells. These monkeys were seen as good replacements for humans because they could be easily infected with a primate version of HIV, known as SIV.However, genetic differences in the two versions of the virus and the immune systems suggested that the monkeys were not the best candidates for HIV research.Todd Allen says the experiments with the new “humanized” mouse more correctly reflected what happens in humans with the AIDs virus.TODD ALLEN: “So it allows us to take all the discoveries weve had in studying individuals infected with HIV in the different immune responses and host genetics that correlate with a better outcome, and translate that now into an animal model where we can actually further manipulate that to understand exactly how these individuals are doing that.”Mr. Allen and the other researchers hope further studies with the “humanized” mouse will lead to an HIV vaccine.46. Why were the “humanized” mice developed?A. To help learn the nature of mice. B. To cure the AIDS. C. To wipe out mice. D. To make the vaccine develop faster.47. What can be learned about “elite controllers”?A. They are easily infected the AIDS. B. Their immune system are different in structure.C. They have a longer living span with the AIDS. D. They are not good at controlling the AIDS.48. It can be inferred from the passage thatA. The researchers know what makes elite controller more able.B. The humanized mice are same as ordinary ones.C. The thymus plays an important role in protecting the body from infection.D. The T-cell reaction in the mice is the same as that of humans.49. Why the scientists prefer the mouse to the monkey?A. The mouse is more related to the human genes. B. the mouse can better show what goes on in human with the AIDS.C. The mouse can easily be dealt with in the controlling experiment.D. The monkey cant be easily infected with HIV.50. What is the best title?A. New research hopes to speed up development of HIV vaccine. B. The humanized mice C. Todd Allen and his experiment. D. Researchers hopes to learn about elite controllers.DWe are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it. Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changedno examination is perfect but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher. Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them- a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from ill-respected schoolcan show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for the job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her schools reputation, unable to compete with the child from the favored school. The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there mus
