Unit One Working in the OfficeAn Overview: This unit is designed to get the Learners familiar with the office routine jobs and environment by finishing task-based exercises. The tasks focus on the following abilities: Name office facilities and common positions in a company Take telephone messages Make business appointments Arrange work schedules Receive visitors Understand and illustrate business tables Write business memosFocusTasks: Task 1.1 Listen to the sentences, find out the picture each sentence indicates and write down the key word under the picture.Task 1.2 Listen to the dialogue about taking a message and fill in the blanks with words, phrases or sentences.Task 1.3 Listen to the dialogue about a meeting and finish the tasks.Task 1.4 Here are some useful expressions and phrases, preview before this unit. Now please write down the meaning for each of it. Now ask the secretary Miss Wang to tell you how to send a fax in detail.Step 2 Task 1. 8 Making appointments (20 mins)Business people always make an appointment before they go to see or visit their clients or potential customers so that they can make their work more efficient. The most important thing to remember when making appointments is that you are selling the appointment, not your product or services. Therefore, you do not want to be talking too much. You can expand on what you have to offer when you get to the appointment.Step 3 Task 1.9 Giving directions in the workplace (15 mins)Complete the following ten sentences by using the department names in the table below. Then describe the departments to your partner. Follow the example.Step 4 Task 1.10 Arranging schedules (15 mins)You are the Sales Assistant of a company. The manager is to visit Paris on business for two days and youve made a schedule for him. Now you need to talk to your manager about the schedule to see if there is anything to be added or changed.Step 5 Task 1. 11 Receiving visitors (25 mins)Work in groups of four. Two of you are hosts, and two of you are visitors. One of the hosts knows one of the visitors. The visitors have arrived at the hosts company for a meeting about signing a business contract, and the hosts need to greet and welcome them. Role play the situation by going through the following steps with the help of the language tips. Step 6 Assignment (5 mins)Situational dialogue: You are an HR assistant named Tom Bruce. Your partner is a new employee named Sandy Lee. Look at the floor plan below and show your new colleague around the company. The tour starts at the reception.
