The story circulates among the people because of its incisive ideological content and remarkable achievements. The heroine, Xianglins Wife, makes deep impression on readers. She was the embodiment of the women who suffered persecution and insult in Old China. Her tragedy was a true portrayal of the women who were at the bottom of society. The Scarlet Letter is the first American symbolist novel. Hester Prynnes tragic experiences reflected the dark rules of Puritan and she germinated the spirit of revolt after suffering mental torments and insult. Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter is subjected to humiliation and has a tragic lot. Although Xianglins Wife and Hester Prynne lived in two different countries, they were terribly persecuted by the ethical code. Xianglins Wife was a very kind maidservant bearing hardships and standing hard work. She contributed amount of labor, but got very low income. However, she was satisfied with the existing state of affairs. Whats more, she didnt realize that Mr. Lu oppressed and exploited her. Her two husbands and a son all passed away, which made her often fall into a trance, thinking of her passed life. The superstition prevailed in the life-destroying feudal code of ethics so that the townspeople didnt have a soft place in their hearts even ridicule her because she remarried against feudal ethical code. Finally, Xianglins Wife was reduced to a beggar and died when Mr. Lus household celebrated the new-year sacrifice. Hester Prynne, through the eyes of the Puritans, was an extreme sinner; she did against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this irrevocable sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life. Hester knew clearly that she was steeped in crime and had to pay a high price for it. Thus she supported herself and her daughter Pearl by her own labor and won the praise of the masses in the end. Xianglins Wife and Hester Prynne are in the same miserable circumstance, but different results, which provides us much material for thought.
