KEY TO EXERCISESSection A: Text ComprehensionI. Reference Answers to Pre-reading Questions:1. From the local peoples words Para 1: Thank you, God, he says, for the Chinese., we can see that they are happy about Chinese investments in their local places Para 1.2. Especially when Chinas perception of its own national interest matches what the U.S. and other international powers seek, that help can be significant Para 16.5. Absorbed by the arc of crisis spreading from the Middle East, the U.S. is simply less visible in Southeast Asia than it once was, and China is stepping into the vacuum Para 19.6. Translation PracticeTranslate the following paragraph into Chinese. IV. Text ComprehensionAnswer the following questions according to the text.1. In the first two paragraphs, the author only narrates Chinas performance in an objective tone Para 1 & 2.2. Through its foreign investments and appetite for raw materials, China has already transformed economies from Angola to Australia. Now China is turning that commercial might into real political muscle, striding onto the global stage and acting like a nation that very much intends to become the worlds next great power Para 3.3. China is preparing for its own day or its own century, that is, China is preparing for its own prosperity and great power Para 4.4. Those questions hint the westerners anxiety over Chinas rise, which reflects their mixed feeling towards Chinas development and rise. As the author says, a peaceful, prosperous future for both China and the West depends on trying to answer them now Para 5.5. China is still a poor country GDP per head in 2005 was $1,700, compared with $42,000 in the U.S. whose leaders face so many problems that it is reasonable to wonder how they ever sleep. The countrys urban labor market recently exceeded by 20% the number of new jobs created. Its pension system is nonexistent. China is an environmental dystopia, its cities air foul beyond imagination and its clean water scarce. Corruption is endemic and growing. Protests and riots by rural workers are measured in the tens of thousands each year. The most immediate priority for Chinas leadership is less how to project itself internationally than how to maintain stability in a society that is going through the sort of social and economic change that, in the past, has led to chaos and violence. The authors tone here is objective Para 6.6. “Comfort zone” here may mean the scope of the activities the Chinese leaders are good at and ought to deal with as the highest priority Para 8.7. From Para 8, we can see that China is very active on world stage.8. “That line” means Chinas central point that there is only one China, and the last sentence can be paraphrased as: if some foreign countries violate Chinas principle that there is only one China in the world, they will surely find out how angry China will be with them. They will cause great trouble in their relationship with China Para 9.9. Chinas aid and investments are attractive to Africans precisely because they come with no conditionality related to governance, fiscal probity or other concerns of Western donors Para 11.10. Chinas key objective is to ensure a steady supply of natural resources, so that its economy can sustain the growth that officials hope will keep a lid on unrest at home. That is why China has reached out to resource-rich democracies like Australia and Brazil as much as it has to such international pariahs as Sudan and Burma, both of which have underdeveloped hydrocarbon reserves. Theres nothing particularly surprising about any of this; it is how all nations behave when domestic supplies of primary goods are no longer sufficient to sustain their economies Para 13.11. According to the author, China wants itself to be a bigger player in the world and be left alone in its internal and external affairs; and it fears the domestic unrest most. We can see those points from Paragraph 7, Paragraph 9 and Paragraph 13 respectively.12. Because they think that Beijing has been helpful on North Korea because its more important to China that Pyongyang not provoke a regional nuclear arms race than it is to deny the U.S. diplomatic support. Para 1813. Paragraph 20 mainly tells us the rapid development of Chinas trade with Southeast Asian countries. The topic sentence is the first one of the paragraph: While American exports to Southeast Asia have been virtually stagnant for the past five years, Chinese trade with the region is soaring.14. He implies that Chinas military spending increase may not be worth worrying so much Para 23.15. In crucial ways, the U.S. has less leverage over China than it ever had over the Soviet Union. China holds billions of dollars of U.S. government assets. American consumers have come to rely on cheap labor in China to provide goods at Wal-Marts everyday low prices Para 25.16. A. The key may be to identify more areas in which Chinas national interests align with the Wests and where cooperation brings mutual benefits. B. it would make sense for the U.S. and China to pool forces and figure out how to tap renewable sources of energy and conserve existing supplies. C. The U.S. could work to get China admitted into the International Energy Agency an
