His work focuses on solving a problem about pain; why does pain continue even after injuries heal? Price experienced this himself from basketball injuries that hurt long after the initial injury. To find the answer, Price and his colleagues focused on chemical signals sent inside nerve ( 神经 ) cells . They found that a lot of chemical pathways used by these signals were activated inside nerves immediately after an injury, but just two pathways remained activated when pain continued We had this great idea a long time ago, said Price. We would cut off one of these pathways, and that would solve pain. There was one small problem with this really great idea. Shutting down just one pathway had no effect on pain But they eventually found something that seemed to shut down both pathways. It was a natural thing called resveratrol ( 白藜芦醇 ) . It s contained in red wine , which is suppose to have all sorts of healthful effects. Wine, however, doesnt have enough resveratrol to provide any real benefits. But Price and his colleagues were able to show that using concentrated resveratrol in a cream applied to the skin reduced pain in animals Here comes the dilemma. When something appears to work in animals, the next step is a clinical trial to test its safety in people. However, clinical trials are expensive, and we couldnt raise the money to do it, Price said. Therefore, he is still hoping to find a clinician who has the intention and the money to cooperate with him on such a trial 28. What does the phrase this great idea in paragraph 3 reser to? A. The film - starring Emma Stone as tennis champion and feminist ( 女权主义者 ) Billie Jean King-provides its audience with an accurate description of progress as we know it difficult, but worth it in every sense of the word. This difficulty was brought to light early in the film during a disagreement between King, Gladys Heldman (World Tennis Magazine founder, played by Sarah Silverman) and Jack Kramer (Association of Tennis Professionals backer, played by Bill Pullman King and Heldman were annoyed by the unfair pay proposed by Kramer for the Pacific Southwest Tennis Tournament, where the women were intended to make eight times less total prize money than the men. But Kramer put forward his explanation worthy of an eye roll; Its not your fault, its just biology. The men are faster, stronger. They are simply more exciting to watch. In response to Kramer, the two women, along with eight other female players, boycotted the unfair pay by starting a tour of their own: the Virginia Slims Tour, which set the groundwork for the Womens Tennis Association Contrary to Kramers original reasons and beliefs are the results of the 2017 Womens US Open. According to Sports Media Watch, the womens final between Americans Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys attracted 1.9 million viewers, while the mens sinal seaturing Rafael Nadal attracted 400,000 fewer. Without Heldman and her Original Nine, one cant help but question whether both the WNBA and U. S. Womens National Soccer Team would have come into being. While Game One of the 2017 WNBA Finals enjoyed a 20 percent increase in viewership, and the USWNST is the most-viewed soccer team in the States, both institutions still strive for equal pay If weve learned anything from Kings story, its to keep going It just takes generations, it doesnt happen overnight, King said in an interview with former USWNST player Julie Foudy Progress cannot be denied, but there are still more mountains to move. 32. Kings story tells the readers that A. a player should never go against his/her sponsors will B. hard work and training can pay off C. nobody is tiny in the face of authority D. there is a long way to go before women athletes are treated equally 34. Because of Heldman and her Original Nine, in the United States A. female players have seen a sharp rise in their pay B. women athletes in the USA are beginning to enjoy a higher status C. female players are better paid than male ones D. mens sports are losing their viewers 35. What may be the best title for the passage? A. Progress is a battle B. Gone is sexual discriminationC. Determination and hard work help D. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends.36. 37 There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to end friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this. Some people would die for their friends and value them more than family. Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed .38Because of these dilfcrcnt definitions of friendship, it is ctlsy to bc unlluppy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or we may want to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways to make new friends again. 39 We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends. 40 Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet A. It is likely that they too would like to get closer to us. B. If people with such difserent views become friends, this can lead to problems C. Also, there are no rules about friendship D.
