3、er, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrim in ati on.one hun dredyears later, the n egro lives on aIon ely isla nd of poverty in the midst of a vast ocea n of material prosperity. onehundredyears later, the negro is stillIanguishedin th

4、e corners of americansociety and findshimself an exile in his own land. so we ve come here today to dramatize a shameful con diti on. in a sense we have come to our n ati on s capital to cash acheck. whe n the architects of our republic wrote the magn ifice nt words of the con stituti on and the dec

5、larati on of in depe nden ce, they were sig ning a promissory note to which every america n was to fall heir. this n ote was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteedthe unalienable rights of life, liberty, and thepursuit of happ in ess.it is obvious today that

6、 america has defaulted on this promissory note in sofar as her citize ns of color are concern ed.in stead of honoring this sacred obligati on, america has give n the n egro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked in sufficie nt funds . but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice
