17、起人们的极大兴趣，产生了深刻的影响。岸边杂志约柯南道尔为他们写更多类似的故事。于是柯南道尔开始写第二批故事。第二批也是6篇，连同第一批，在1892年汇编成冒险史。与此同时，海滨杂志也向柯南?道尔邀稿，1892年以银色马为首的12个故事陆续发表，1894年汇集成回忆录出版。 这时，柯南道尔决心停止写作这类故事，因此在最后一案中，让福尔摩斯坠入深渊身亡。此举使读者大哗，有超过两万人取消订阅连载故事的岸边杂志（the strand magazine），连他母亲也提出抗议。 1901年，柯南道尔听到一个朋友讲述达特摩尔的传奇，于是构思了一个家庭遭受一只鬼怪似的猎犬追逐的神奇故事，这就是1902年出版的第三部长篇巴斯克维尔的猎犬，这个作品成功唤起了读者和出版者对福尔摩
