1、Passage One Anne Whitney, a sophomore at ColoradoStateUniversity, first had a problem taking tests when she began college. I was always well prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly

2、. I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher. Another student in microbiology has similar experiences. He said, My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, sat dow

3、n to take it, and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn't even write them down! These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Becaus

4、e a student worries about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student can't write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. Recentl

5、y, test anxiety had been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students. Special university counseling courses try to help students. In these courses, counselors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students

6、 take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their tension. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousn

7、ess, they can let their minds work at ease. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test. An expert at the University of California explains. With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking out program. Most of then experience better control during their

How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there were not enough staff on duty to ma

14、n all the service grilles(窗口) or checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to hire cashiers and counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that uncovering all their cash registers at any one time would increase overheads(企业管理费用). An

15、d the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service grilles to be occupied “at times when demand is low”. It is the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is cut short. As for us guests, we just have to put

16、up with it. There is also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been thrown out of their jobs in the interests of “efficiency”and replaced by coin-eating machines which offer everything from lager to laxatives(从贮藏啤酒到通便剂). Not to mention the creeping threat of the tea-making kit

17、 in your room: a kettle with a mixed collection of tea bags, plastic milk cartons and lump sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I do not, especially when I am paying for “service”. Can it be stopped, this worsening of service, this growing attitude that the customer is always a nuisance (讨厌地

18、人)? I angrily hope so because it is happening, sadly, in all walks of life. Our only hope is to hammer home our anger whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, bring back into practice that other, older slogan - Take Our Custom(买卖) Elsewhere. 56.
