2、ashington, D.C_The Chemical Practice Committee continues to provide information on current developments in IP law, recent litigation, and latest technologies. Programs in 2012 have examined areas unique to chemical patent practice, and explored technical and legal issues from a chemical practitioner

3、s perspective. Similar programs are designed for this meeting, later this year, and into 2013.VISION, MISSION, and VALUESWe are committed to providing a meaningful vision, focused mission, and strong values to the Chemical Patent Practice Committee. We will continue to present programs of interest t

4、o attract a broad range of practitioners. These provide educational opportunities, give individuals an opportunity to present topical content, attract new members, and provide a more collegial and intimate environment in which individuals can network. We will continue to explore new growth areas wit

5、hin Chemical practice, and strive to address the needs of practitioners in those areas. Further, to reach committee members who cannot come to the meetings, we will continue to place any Judicial and Administrative Decisions Reports, other subcommittee reports, and select presentations given at the

6、meetings on the Committee's Web Page. We will also continue to correspond on a periodic basis with all committee members available via e-mail to distribute materials of interest, provide information about upcoming activities, and promote more active involvement. While we have traditionally suppl

7、emented our e-mail communications with mailed materials, we now concentrate our efforts on electronic communication.ADVOCACY We will continue to respond to members concerns regarding legislative, PTO and judicial issues, through our Response Task Force and Legislative subcommittee. Lawrence Kass (Mi

8、llbank Tweed) serves as liaison to the Amicus Committee. His responsibilities will include ongoing review of judicial decisions of concern to chemical practitioners and coordination with the Amicus committee for possible participation.We are also looking at creating other subcommittees, including an

9、 International Subcommittee, and are actively seeking volunteers.PUBLIC EDUCATIONThis is a key area where the AIPLA has traditionally provided great services. Under the leadership of Mike Dzwonczyk, immediate past chair of the Chemical Patent Practice, the Road Show was started again in 2011. It was

10、 a great success. Another Road Show is planned for the summer of 2013. Mary Jo Boldingh (Clearspire Law Company) has agreed to head this effort.This year at the annual meeting, we are joining with Biotechnology Patent Practice to give a presentation on IP Issues in Novel Venture Financing of Biophar

11、maceutical Development. Featured speakers include Joel Nied (Partner, LeClairRyan), discussing an overview of novel venture structures and financing arrangements; Gregory J. Sieczkiewicz (Vice President, Intellectual Property, Flagship Ventures), discussing venture capital company approaches to inve

12、sting in clinical development and generation of IP; Mike Warner (Pfizer, Assistant General Counsel), discussing big pharma partnerships with small biotech/pharma; and Cindy Fuchs (Technology Development Coordinator and Patent Attorney for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney D

13、iseases) discussing partnerships with government to commercialize new technologies. At the mid-winter meeting, Sam Kais (J&J) and Mark Sanbaken (Seattle Genetics) discussed due diligence in pharmaceutical transactions including acquisition, collaboration, deal killers, war stories about what has

14、 gone well or not well. We have also had success with webinars. William Childs is running this program for a second straight year. We had a webinar in April that featured Bob Titus of Eli Lilly and Brian Lathrop of Drinker Biddle and Reath discussing the restrictions practice with an emphasis on Mar

15、kush claims.  Upcoming webinars are being scheduled. One discusses the scientific basis and legal application of Isotopic Analysis of Batch Products, and another analyzes how an evolving written description standard will impact Markush practice and how the AIPLA post-grant procedures can take a

16、dvantage of those changes. We are hopeful to find more willing participants to put on additional webinars that particularly relate to chemical patent attorneys.MEMBER SERVICESIn an effort to assist the staff in achieving the AIPLA's goals, the Chemical Practice Committee will endeavor to rehabil

17、itate its webpage. Postings and the delivery of relevant content has declined and our objective is to restore the vitality and usefulness of the webpage. Our efforts continue.GLOBAL OUTREACHIt is important that we continue to grow, not only attracting new members from existing strongholds, but tapping into new groups that may have otherwise been reluctant to participate in AIPLA meetings. We believe that having a diverse membership and diverse speakers provides a better program for all parties. One of our goals is to attract new members, particularly from the corporate and government sectors
