4、fligate. when i read the book, ican always find the same personalities in the society now. that is why i think this book is indeed the representative of thesociety in britain in the 18th century.the family of gentleman in the countryside is jane austens favourite topic. but this littletopic can refl
5、ect big problems. it concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in britain in her century. youcan find these from the very beginning of this book.the first sentence in this book is impressive. it reads:“it is a truth well known to all theworld that an unmarried man in possession of a
6、 large fortune must be in need of a wife”. theundertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.people always think that austen was an expert at telling love stories. in fact, the marriage in her book is not the resultof love, but the result of econom
7、ic needs. after reading this book, i know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need ofa husband, a wealthy man.i couldnt forget how eager mrs. bennet wants to marry off her daughters. if you want to know why she is so crazyabout these things, i must mention the situation in britain at that time
8、. only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting hisfathers possessioyounger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession ofa large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become w
9、ealthier,particularly for women without many possessions. jane austen told us that money and possession determined everything,including marriage and love in her century.in“pride and prejudice”, the sister of mr. bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying jane because the bennetsdont have many pos
10、sessions and their social positions are muchlower than them. from this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband.the society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.in modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreas
11、ed rapidly,the concep t of“money determines everything”is still rooted in some peoples mind.parents try hard to interfere their childrens marriages. education background, possessions,jobs remains the main reason that may influence ones marriage. ims asrtrilyl afor moneybig problem in our society. we
12、 cant help thinking: can money determine everything?austen left this problem for us to think. the genius of jane austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity thatreflects big problems. although austen was only 21 when she wrote“pride and prejudice”, her sharp observation ofsocial lives mak
13、es the style of thisbook surprisingly mature and lively. the plots in her works are always very natural. the development of the plot is asinevitable as a problem in mathematics. i think the depth of pride and prejudice is the reason that makes this bookprominent and classic. today, her book still ca
14、n be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and inmodern time.Published in 1847, WUtheRING HEIGHTS was not well received by the reading public, many of whom condemnedit as sordid, vulgar, and unnatural-and author Emily Bronte went to her grave in 1848 believing that her onl
15、y novel was afailure. It was not until 1850, when WUTHERING HEIGHTS received a second printing with an introduction by Emilyssister Charlotte, that it attracted a wide readership. And from that point the reputation of the book has never looked back.Today it is widely recognized as one of the GREat n
16、ovels of English literature.Even so, WUtheRING HEIGHTS continues to divide readers. It is not a pretty love story; rather, it is swirling tale oflargely unlikeable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding,and many people find it extremely
17、 unpleasant. And yet-it possesses a grandeur of language and design, a sense oftremendous pity and GREat loss that sets it apart from virtually every other novel written.the novel is told in the form of an extended FLASHback. After a visit to his strange landlord, a newcomer to the areadesires to kn
18、ow the history of the family-which he receives from Nelly Deans, a servant who introduces us to theEarnshaw family who once resided in the house known as Wuthering Heights. It was once a cheerful place, but OldEarnshaw adopted a Gipsy child who he named Heathcliff. And Catherine, daughter of the hou
19、se, found in him theperfect companion: wild, rude, and as proud and cruel as she. But although Catherine loves him, even recognizes him asher soulmate, she cannot lower herself to marry so far below her social station. She instead marries another, and in sodoing sets in motion an obsession that will
20、 destroy them all.WUtheRING HEIGHTS is a bit difficult to get into; the opening chapters are so dark in their portrait of the end resultof this obsessive love that they are somewhat off-putting. But they feed into the flow of the work in a remarkable way,setting the stage for one of the most remarka
21、ble structures in all of literature, a story that circles upon itself in a series ofrepetitions as it plays out across two generations. Catherine and Heathcliff are equally remarkable, both vicious and cruel,and yet never able to shed their impossible love no matter how brutally one may wound the ot
22、her.As the novel coils further into alcoholism, seduction, and one of the most elaborately imagined plans of revenge itgathers into a ghostly tone: Heathcliff, driven to madness by a woman who is not there but who seems reflected in everypart of his world-dragging her corpse from the grave, hearing
23、her calling to him from the moors, escalating his brutalitynot for the sake of brutality but so that her memory will never fade, so that she may never leave his mind until death itself.Yes, this is madness, insanity, and there is no peace this side of the grave or even beyond.It is a stunning novel,
24、 frightening, inexorable, unsettling, filled with unbridled passion that makes one cringe.
