1、how to improve students,ora i engl i shabi iity张薇摘要:随着改革开放深入,英语教学越來越引起人们的重视,尤其北京成功深奥。人们都热中于英语学 习。所以英语教改进入一个转折点,面临着美好的未来。现在,在九年制义务教育小,标准英语课程以取代以前的教学模式。根据英语语言教育分成九个 等级,新课标采川了国际体制,改变了iii的方法。新的教学方式通过引起学生的兴趣,鼓励他们 参与去培养学生ri常生活中运用英语的能力。新的方法重在听力和口语,因此现在口语在中学英 语教学屮越来越重要。本文主耍讨论如何提高学牛的口语能力,从卜面三个人的方面阐述:1. 说的重要性
2、。2. 口语交流过程中的一些障碍。3. 捉高口语能力的基本方法。本文从初屮英语教师的观点,并且从理论和实际结合屮得出结论。关键词:口语;交流;能力;中学;英语教学abstractwith the opening-up of china, english teaching has been getting more and more attention, especial ly since bei jin百 won the bid to hoid the 2008 olympic games. people are enthusiastic about learning engl ish . a
3、s a resul t, engl ish teaching and reform are coming to a turning point, which predicts a bright future inenglish education in china.now, a 9-year vol tin tary educat i on program i s put forward in china. a sta ndard english course is being used to replace the former teaching outline. the new stand
4、ard adopts the international system according to which english language education is divided into 9 levels. this has changed the old style of teaching, which attaches importanee to grammar and vocabulary. adopting the new standard helps to develop the students, ability to use english in their daily
5、life, by focusing on arousing their interest, and encouraging their participation.the new method will place less str ess on reading and writing" , in favor of "listening” and "speaking” . so now, speaking is getting more and more important in middle school english teaching.this paper
6、discuss how to improve students, speaking ability and expound the theme through three aspects as follows:l.the importance of speaking.2.some barriers in the process of speaking communication.3.essential methods for improving students, speaking ability.the issue will be discussed from the perspective
7、 of a teacher of engl ish in junior middle school and a possible conclusion will be reached with the help of some theoretical and practical support.key words : speaking、communication、ability> middle school> english teaching.introductionenglish is a popular language especially in the new centur
8、y. as is known to us all, it is the most widely used ianguage in the developing world and it's getting more an d more important nowadays. recent estimates suggest that more than 400 million pe ople speak it as their first ianguage, with more than 1800 million people speaking it as second ianguag
9、e. it is an official ianguage in a large number of countries and is w idely used in air traffic control and academic gatherings.nowadays, with the opening-up of china, english teaching has been getting more and more attention, especially since beijing won the bid to hold the 2008 olympic games. peop
10、le are en thusiastic about lear ning english. most of our stude nts beg in to learn e n glish from grade 3 in primary schools. however, classroom teachi ng has long bee n t he only way to learn english in china, and the method has usually involved cramming grammar-translation knowledge into learning
11、 a ianguage. but this approach of teachi ng and learning english is evidentially passive, because it goes against the principle o f english teaching, which requires that listening and speaking take the lead in english teachi ng, and on the basis of these two skills, readi ng and writing will be cult
12、ivated. so speaking as one of the four ianguage skills has played a very important role in e nglish teaching in middle schools. what's more, with the reformation of new process of teaching, it requires that the students will have the expressing ability to receive an d pass information in english
13、 in real occasions. but many students often can speak w ell in class or in relaxed occasions, and when they are put in a real condition, they c an't. why does it appear? well, it is affected by many elements one of the elements i s their english speaking ability. so it demands the english teache
14、rs in junior schools to develop the student's speaking ability. so also it is necessary for the teachers to h elp the students develop the ability of speaking.> the importanee of speaking() the importanee of speaking existing in the ianguage of human beingsulanguage is vocal ,this means that
15、speech is the primary medium of ianguage. while writi ng is sec on dary. firstly, for any ian guage speech existed long before the writi ng system came into being. even today ianguages which have lonely a spoken form out number ianguage which have a well-developed writing system. secondly, normal ch
16、ildr en always learn to speak first. they begin to read and write only when they have rea ched the school age. thirdly, speech is more important than writing for people's dail y life. a person who can't read and write is only an 'illiterate'. however, a person wh o cartt speak is nor
17、mally regarded as'disabledso speech is very important in the development of human beings.() the position of speaking in the four ianguage skillsof the four ianguage skills (listening, speaking, reading, &writing), listening takes the first step however, communication is a two-way activity. w
18、hen you can understand w hat is said to you, because of some reasons, you can't speak out what you mean, the n the communication can't be continued. so this communication will become a fall. d uring the learning of a ianguage, listening and reading are a process of understandin g and absorpt
19、ion, speaking and writing are a process of expression and use. underst anding and absorption are foundation while expression and use are improvement. tha t is, the former is a process of in put; the latter is a process of output. without the la tter, the development of the ianguage practical ability
20、 to understand and absorption will be meaningless. it is impossible to master the english and to form the ability to use en glish comprehe nsively only relying on the in put of ian guage. the expressi on of spoken and written should also be used to check and improve the language absorpti on and the
21、thinking ability. while the ian guage in put is in creased, the favorable practi cal activities of output will also be done constantly on the basis of understanding. an d the final aim of ian guage teachi ng is to develop the stude nts1 ability to comm un icat e in the form of spoken and written. th
22、ereby, the listening ability must rely on the s peaking in a way. moreover, it is proved that if the speaking is trained best, it will b e helpful for stude nts' confide nee to lear n english.(三)the imports nee of speaki ng existi ng in the teach ing syllabusthe aims of teaching syllabus stipula
23、tes that u english teaching in middle schools are mainly to train students to have a definite foundation of listening and speaking so as to attain the aim to communicate comprehensively with others in english”it require s the teachers of english to organize their 45-minute class in english to create
24、 a livin g and lively en glish environ me nt of en glish lear ning. thus the stude nts' listeni ng and三、some barriers in the process speaking communication.() phonetic barrier“the articulator apparatus of a human being are contained in three important areas o r cavities: the pharyngeal cavity-th
25、e throat, the oral cavity-the mouth, and the nasal c avity-the no se. the air stream comi ng from the lungs may be mod 讦 ied in these caviti es in a variety of ways. it may also be modified in the larynx before it reaches any of the cavities.”because of the point fthe learners should be required to
26、know every p art of pronunciation of human's body and can pronounce the pure english .however, for most stude nts in the process of their lear ning, they are greatly in flue need by their teachers, especially teachers1 phonetics. but at present in many areas, especially in t he rural areas, scho
27、ols are short of specialized english teachers. some other teachers who are not familiar with the sound linking, plosive, stress, etc. are asked to teach e n glish. maybe they are compete nt in teach ing en glish grammar and ian guage points, but it is surely difficult for them to speak fluent and pu
28、re english. and also some sc hools can't afford modern machines, so the students carvt imitate the pure english, s o their speaking ability can't be trained favorably, when they communicate with other s, they ofte n find their pronun ciati ons are d iff ere nt from others so they can't u
29、n der sta nd what is said to them. therefore, their liste ning ability will be in flue need and th e con fidence of comm un icati on also be in flue need.(二)grammar barrieralthough we emphasize again and again that the aim of our ianguage teaching is to communicate, we still should have some knowled
30、ge of english grammar. in english, t here is a change of tense. and the order, which the action happens, can be presente d by the change of verbs, which many students often ignore these points when they communicate with others. as a result, some unnecessary mistakes will happen. for ex ample, a stud
31、ent wants to express this meaning “i have been to beijing.m not knowing the differenee between “have been to mand uhave gone to: so he says, ul have goneto beijing.n if he knows their differenee, he will not make this mistake.(三)men tai barrieran american psychologist has had an experiment among thr
32、ee thousand people like t his: what do you worry about most? there are all kinds of answers, such as death, d ump, loss of relatives, diseases, etc. but to our surprised, about forty percent of peop le think that what people worry about and frighten most is to speak before people. f rom this experim
33、ent, we know that some uncomfortable feeling will happen in mother tongue to communicate. and the uncomfortable feeling will be more serious in the s econd ian guage. most stude nts will have some men tai barrier or psychological barrier during the speaking training or the speaking communication, an
34、d we often find that t he students will amplify well in warm-up in class. however, in real occasion, they will only have a look at the other people without any word even if they meet the same s ituation as that in class. maybe they also want to speak to other freely. just because of lack of the con
35、fide nee, they can't speak well, and they would rather watch others communication. in their opinions, they should speak english purely and fluently and t here are no grammatical mistakes even to wonderful stage when people communicate.then the communication will be continued pridely, or others m
36、aybe laugh at them. i n english class, this aspect is often appeared. some students worry about their pronu nciation and intonation, so they will only say "tm sorry” as the answers to the teache rs1 questi ons. all these will in fluence the improveme nt of speaki ng ability. their speak ing abi
37、lity increasingly becomes worse under the lack of training so long time.of course, the above mentioned is not the only factors to obstruct the improvement of speaki ng ability. and there are some other factors to in fluence the speaki ng ability.%1. essential methods for improving students1 speaking
38、 ability.(一)create a good ianguage surrounding to arouse the students' enthusiasm for e nglish learning.1、 anrealnenvironment of english learning is of great help.the traditional grammar-translation teaching method played a definite role in middle school teaching over the past decades, but this
39、method of learning english through c hinese translation in class has not entirely catered for the new situation of learning a foreign ianguage. we should bring the students to a full realization of the fact that i earning english always through chinese translation certainly does not help them impr o
40、ve their skills of using en glish but we have n't a good ian guage surro unding to spea k english all the time, which has always big problem for our chinese english learners.and we know that teaching in class is the basic form of english teaching. firstly, the english in his class should be on t
41、he basis of the students1 understanding easily. do n't let the students have the room to express in chinese. and the teachers should he ip them learn to think in english and encourage them to answer the questions in eng lish. to the beginners of learning english, they often don't dare to ans
42、wer the teache rs1 questions in english because of some reasons. so the teachers should encourage t hem with patie nee and let them give up the shy min ds. and the teachers should con duct their lessons in english as much as possible, so as to force the students to get used to liste ning speaki ng a
43、nd thinking in en glish. before a new less on, teachers can create some situations for the students to respond to them and then to paraphrase a few sentences or to retell a story etc. on the other hand, for their answers, the teac hers should give them proper estimate and let them have a successful
44、feeling of getti ng knowledge. then they will be glad to speak it more and more. thus the students feel in a real environment of english like those native learners. actually in such a livel y atmosphere, the students have been motivated to convey their ideas in english. of course, it is quite clear
45、that the students ' ability of speaking must be well and effect ively trained. in my classroom, there are many piece of paper with “english corners” o n the wall. before class, i often let them see some english film in order to feel weste rn conditions and customs and attract their interest for
46、english learning.2、some measures for arousing students' interesta> three-minutes speech before class .at the beginning of a class, students are often asked to come to the blackboard to give the others a duty report.b> give more chances to the students to do pairs work ,making up their own
47、dialogue.c、make full use of audio-visual aids to create situations .d、carry out some activities, such as: speaking/reading competition, chinese forbidden, english corner, etc.e、play games .e.g. pass the message, make more sentences as quickly as possible.f、modify li yang's crazily speaking engli
48、sh .(二)help the students lay a solid base of english phonetics.if there is something wrong with a student *s pronunciation, then, obviously, he can't un dersta nd whatfs on in the comm un icati on. and in creasi ngly it will in flue nee the stu dent's con fide nee of comm un icati on. so tea
49、cher of en glish should help stude nts lay a solid base of en glish phon etics, which in eludes accurate pronun ciati on, good int on atio n, sound linking, plosive and strong and weak formst is proved that students with good pronun ciati on and int on at ion have obvious adva ntages in speaki ng ju
50、st as a writ erfs opinions can be obtained by reading between the lines, a speaker i intention ca n be revealed from the intonation and tunes he uses. for example, the students of o ne of my classes are n't ofte n vigorous when i ask them to read after me, they often read slowly. then i read lou
51、dly, and then the students read louder, too. what's more, it is also proved that good pronunciation and tunes not only help himself develop th e con fide nee of en glish lear ning, but also help others surro unding him try to improve their speaking ability. as the youth have a strong presented e
52、xpect and most of the m hope that they can have fluent and pure english then become the focus and the a dmiri ng people to the public, which make them have a better con fide nee in their life.(%1) give more chances to the students to develop their speaking ability as well as the other three skills (
53、listening, reading and writing)in class, the students should be given more time to speak and they can't be regarded just as audiences, which will not have a good teaching effect and the student's spea king ability also can't be trained .the teachers should let the students take part in t
54、h e class. in jffc textbooks, there are many interesting dialogues and stories so the te achers should let the students act the dialogue out or make another dialogue with th eir own words as possible as they can. and therejre many riddles and chants in the t extbooks so the teachers can take the formation of competition to let the students i mitate and follow the tape and see who is the winner. next, the teachers can also arr ange for the students
