I n 1879, Oxford Uni versity in

9、 En gla nd asked Prof. James Murray to serve aseditor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the En glish Ian guage. It wouldin clude every En glish word possible and would give not only the definitionbutalso the history of the word and quotations(弓丨文)show ing how it was

10、used.This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volun teers from Brita in, the United States, andthe British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever writte n in En glish. Hundreds of volun teers resp on ded, in cludi ng William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an America n surgeon w

11、ho had served in the Civil War and was now livi ng in En gla nd. He gave his address as“ Broadmoor, Crowthor ne,Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.Mi nor joined the army of volun teers sending words and quotati onsto Murray. Overthe next 17 years, he became one of the staffs most valued contributors.B

12、ut he was also a myster y. In spite of many invitations,he would always declineto visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray fin allydecided to travel to Crowthor ne himself.Whenhe arrived, he found Mi nor locked in a book-l ined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精 神病院)forthe Criminally Insane.Murray and Minor bec
