7、stlybeenthecenteroftheresearchontheplay.TheMerchantofVenicewasfirstprintedin1600inquarto,ofwhichnineteencopiessurvive.Thiswasfollowedbya1619printing,andlateraninclusionintheFirstFolioin1623.TheplaywaswrittenshortlyafterChristopherMarlowe'simmenselypopularJewofMalta(1589),aplaywhereinaJewnamedBar
8、abasplaysagreatlyexaggeratedvillain.TheportrayalofShakespeare'sJewwasandremainedcomicuntilthelate1700satwhichtimehewasfirstplayedasatruevillain.In1814Shylock'srolewasdepictedasacharactertobepitied,andin1879hewasfirstportrayedasatragiccharacter.Subsequentinterpretationshavevariedgreatlyoverth
9、eyears,butsinceWorldWarIIhehasmostoftenbeenconceivedofastragic.TheMerchantofVenicehasbeendescribedasagreatcommentaryonthenatureofracialandreligiousinteractions.2. DeficienciesofPreviousStudiesontheMysteryofAntonioSadnessinTheMerchantofVenicesfourThetitlecharacter,Antonio,beginstheplayintriguingly:&q

12、nationofthecauseofAntonio'ssadness,thereremainnien.ydeficiencFirst,TheMerchantofVenicewhichisconsideredtobeoneofShakespearegreatcomedies,actuallyfunctionsasShakespeare'sfarewelltocomedy.AntonioisoneofShakespeare'smelancholiccharacterisespeareinTheMerchantofVeniceisunderminingallthatpasse
13、sforcomicentertainment.ShakespeareusesAntonio'ssadnessasadevicetosetthetragictoneinthecomicatmosphere.Second,alotofissuesthatarearguedaboutregardingheMerchantofVenicecanbeconsiderablyclarifiedifweknowsomethingabouttheaudienceitwaswrittenfor.Inthemodern,post-Holocaustreadingsoftheplay,theproblemo
14、fanti-Semitismintheplayhasbeendiscussedalot.GiventhatAntoniodecidesnottoseizeShylock'sgoodsaspunishment,wemightconsiderAntoniotobemerciful.ButwemayalsoquestionwhetheritismercifultoreturntoShylockhalfofhisgoods,onlytotakeawayhisreligionandhisprofession.Antonioscompassionseemstostemasmuchfromself-
15、interestasfromconcernforhisfellowman.Shakespearethusshowsabalanceofprejudiceonbothsides.ThequestionwhetherAntonioisahomosexualinlovewithBassaniocanalsointerpreteddifferently.5.ConclusionDespitetheresearchesalreadydoneandachievementsalreadymadeonthesubject,manyfrontiersarestillwaitingtobeexplored.Ont
16、hebasisofthepreviousresearchesbyforerunnersandadoptingnewapproacheswearetomakeadeeperandmorecomprehensiveunderstandingofthissubject.Wedon'tmeantosuggestthatotherwaysoflookingattheplayare"wrong."Infact,oneofthethingsthatissogreataboutShakespeareisthattherearesomanydifferentwaysofinterpr
