Explain the rules 一、名词作主语1. 集体名词public, family, class, crowd, population, team, group, audience, majority, committee, enemy等作主语时,如果强调整体,谓语动词用单数形式,如果强调个体,谓语动词用复数形式。集体名词cattle, pe

24、ople, police等作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。如:My family is a small one. My family were watching TV when the news came that we won the grand prize.The cattle are eating grass in the field. 2. 单、复数同形的名词如species, deer, fish, sheep, Chinese, Japanese, means等作主语时,应根据其意义来决定谓语动词的单复数形式。如:This species of rose is rare.These

25、species are few in numbers and may be wiped out from this planet if necessary actions are not taken in time.3. 复数形式的书名、剧名、报名、国名、学科及组织名称等作主语时,谓语动词通常用单数形式。如:The United Nations is one of the most important international organizations in keeping world peace. 4. 主语是glasses, shorts, gloves, scissors, trou

26、sers等复数名词时,谓语动词要用复数形式。但如果它们前面有pair / type / kind of时,谓语动词的单复数由pair / type / kind的数决定。如:The trousers are worn out, so a pair of new trousers is going to be bought. 5. 表示重量、距离、金额、时间等的复数名词作主语时,通常被看作整体,谓语动词一般用单数形式。但是如果强调数目,谓语动词用复数形式。如:Five hundred miles is a long distance. One hundred cents make a dolla

27、r. 6. “more than one / many a + 单数名词作主语时,尽管意义上是复数,但谓语动词多用单数形式。但是,在“more +复数名词+ than one作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。如:Many a ship has been damaged in the storm. More members than one are against the plan. 二、代词作主语1. 代词作主语时,谓语动词的单复数要根据它们所代替的名词的单复数来确定。如:Your shoes are black, and mine (= my shoes) are brown. Most of

28、his spare time was spent in reading. Each of the guests was given a present. 2. 表示数量的不定代词much, little作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式;many, both, few作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。如:The little I have is not worth giving. Only the few are likely to enjoy this music. 三、由连接词连接的名词或代词作主语1. 由and或both . and . 连接两个并列主语时,谓语动词一般用复数形式。如果and连接的

29、两局部指同一人、同一物、同一事或同一概念时,and后面的名词前没有冠词,谓语动词常用单数形式。如:The singer and dancer is going to give us a performance this evening.The singer and dancer指同一个人,双重身份The peasant and the poet are going to make speeches for the blind in this special school. The peasant and the poet指两个不同的人,一个是农民,另一个是诗人2. 当主语后面跟有with, a

30、long with, together with, including, but, except, like, as well as, besides, rather than等引起的短语时,谓语动词的单复数与主语保持一致。如:Dr. Green, together with his wife and two sons, has just left and will return at four oclock. 3. 由or, either . or, neither . nor, not only . but also, not . but等连接两个名词或代词作主语时,谓语动词通常与邻近的名

31、词或代词保持一致。如:Neither you nor he knows anything about it. 四、数词、量词作主语“分数+ of +名词构成的短语或“a lot of / plenty of / a (large) quantity of / the rest of +名词构成的短语作主语时,谓语动词用单数还是复数取决于of后的名词的单复数。如:Half of the students have read the novel.       Half of the food is unfit to eat. 五、从句及其

32、它作主语1. 单个名词性从句作主语时,谓语动词通常用单数形式。但and连接的两个名词性从句作主语如果表示两个概念,谓语动词用复数。另外what引导的主语从句作主语时,谓语动词的单复数取决于表语的单复数。如:Whether I have passed last weeks driving test is still not clear. Where the star will go and what he will do have not been announced to the public. What the peasant workers need badly are books on

33、practical skills. 2. 单个动词不定式或动词-ing形式作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式,但两个表示不同概念的动词不定式或动词-ing形式并列作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。如:Remember the life rule that to see one time is better than to hear a hundred times. Collecting stamps and playing football are my favourite hobbies.  Step 4. Give more examples and give a conclusionSt
