4、NewYork,in1848.Thus,acompleteunderstandingoftheoriginsanddevelopmentofnineteenthcenturyfeminismintheUnitedStatesrequiresthatthegeographicalfocusbewidenedtoincludeEuropeandthatthedetailedstudyalreadymadeofsocialconditionsbeexpandedtoincludetheideologicaldevelopmentoffeminism。Theearliestandmostpopular

5、oftheutopiansocialistsweretheSaintSimonians。ThespecificallyfeministpartofSaintSimonianismhas,however,beenlessstudiedthanthegroup'scontributiontoearlysocialism。Thisisregrettableontwocounts.By1832feminismwasthecentralconcernofSaintSimonianismandentirelyabsorbeditsadherents'energy;hence,byignor

6、ingitsfeminism,EuropeanhistorianshavemisunderstoodSaint-Simonianism。Moreover,sincemanyfeministideascanbetracedtosaintsimonianismEuropeanhistorians'appreciationoflaterfeminisminFranceandtheUnitedStatesremainedlimited.Saint-Simon'sfollowers,manyofwhomwerewomenbasedtheirfeminismonaninterpretati

7、onofhisprojecttoreorganizetheglobebyreplacingbruteforcewiththeruleofspiritualpowersoThenewworldorderwouldberuledtogetherbyamale,torepresentreflection,andafemale,torepresentsentiment.Thiscomplementarityreflectsthefactthat,whiletheSaintSimoniansdidnotrejectthebeliefthattherewereinnatedifferencesbetwee
