3、c, juniormiddleschool students have some difficulties in learning English. Interest is an indispensable inherent motive if junior middle school students want to learn English well. This article attempts to explore how toarouse junior middle school students interest in learning English in terms of th

5、eaching; Extra-curricular teaching摘要:多年来,如何提高中学英语教学水平,尽快将初中生带进英语之门,并且使他们取得令人满意的成绩,一直是中学教师不断探索和研究的重要课题。中学英语教学质量的提高与学生的学习兴趣有着极其密切的关系。初中生由于缺乏学习该语言的社会环 境,以及恐惧、自卑、焦虑等心理障碍等因素的影响,学习英语有一定的困难。兴趣是初中生学好英语不可缺少的内在动力。本文从中学英语教学的听、说、读、写四个方面能力的培养,同时从课堂教学、课外教学两方面,并结合初中教学实际和新课程要求,浅谈一下如何激发初中生学习英语的兴趣。关键词:初中生;英语学习;激发兴趣;课

6、堂教学;课外教学一、IntroductionAtpresent, all the universities,middleschools and primaryschools ofour country have re-enacted teaching syllabus, which puts forward new requirements to the aspects of vocabulary, grammar, conversation, listening and writing skills. The promotion and implementation of the new s

7、yllabus on the one hand can meetthe learning needs of students, on the other hand, with definite requirements of new syllabus,students powerof study can be strengthened and it is helpful to the balanced development of various skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation, ther

8、eby improving the situation of not being good at communicating in English and expressing authentically of our students1.Over the years, the problem of how to improve English teaching level of junior middle school and makethem get the satisfactoryresults have been an importantsubject whichthe juniorm

9、iddle school teachers research continuously. In order to improve the English teaching level of junior middle school, first of all, wemust stimulate studentsinterest in learning English. Because interest is the inherent indispensable power oflearning English well,the sparks of ignitingintelligence,an

10、 intrinsicpsychologicalqualityof overcoming difficulties. It can stimulate certain emotions and arouse the motivation of studying. The greater the interestand the stronger the motivation, the easier to promote students to search for new knowledge actively, improvemethods of study and apply knowledge

11、creatively, thereby enhancing learning effects and learning ability.Only when students have a keen interest in English can we mobilize their enthusiasm of self-study, give fullplay to their personality and intellectualpotential and improve their level of English. Therefore, this articleattempts to e

12、xplorehow to arouse junior middle school studentsinterest in learning English in terms of thecultivation of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as class teaching and extracurricular teaching.二、 Arouse the Students Interest by Using Lively Class Teaching(一) Set up the Harmonious

13、Teacher-student Relationship and Create the Active Class AtmosphereRogers, an American psychologist once said, “ Thesuccessful teaching not only lies on one kind of teacher-student relationship which is full of genuine understanding and trust, but also one kind of class atmosphere which is harmoniou

14、s and pleasant2 . ” Harmoniousteacher-student relationship and active class atmosphere help to arouse and maintain students interest in learning English.English is an unfamiliar and difficult subject to junior middle school students. Therefore, it is easy to generatemany complicated psychological pr

15、essures on the students psychology, such as mysterious, excited, scaredand self-contemptuous, etc. And the students eagerly want to search for answers and psychological balancefrom the teacherswords and behaviors. So it is of importance of harmonious teacher-student relationship. If ateacher has les

16、sons with a smile on his/her face; goes into the class and has conversations with students; runs his eyes over the whole classroom to make every student feel his/her attention and concern; if someone strays away from class, he/she can go to the student and ask, “ Can I help you?Do you understand? Is

17、 there anythingwrongwith you? ”This can banish the studentsnegative psychologicaldomino effects such as unassisted,scared and self-contemptuous. Meanwhile, it canarouse the students positive psychological domino effectssuch as confidenceand interest.Allof these can buildup a foundationforharmonioust

18、eacher-studentrelationship and provide a premise for arousing the studentsinterest of learning. If a student is afraid of or dislikes or bears resentment against the teacher, undoubtedly, he is unwilling tolisten to the teacher and he won t pay attention to learning. If a teacher is respected and ad

19、mired by students, the students willbe fullof vigorwhen having class. Therefore, active class atmosphere and harmoniousteacher-student relationship can facilitate students pro gress. Livelyand active class atmosphere can arousestudents interest in learning and maintain the enthusiasm for their learn

20、ing and exert their learning potential.(二) Arouse the Students Interest by Cultivating Their Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing SkillsThe teaching in juniormiddle school is mainly concerned with sentence pattern, vocabulary, sentence pattern and grammar. The training of listening, speaking, re

21、ading and writing run through the whole teaching process 3 .Listening,speaking, reading and writingare fourskills whichmiddle school students should master. It is also the most difficultproblem the students meet when learning English. In order to let the students practice with interest, at the begin

22、ning of class, the teacher may bring about 5 or 10 minutes to retellthe main idea of the lesson which they learnt last class, or broadcast the text over the radio and then let the students retell, and organize them to practice in dialogue. The dialogue is broad in realm and free in form. It is good

23、to forma relaxed and harmonious class atmosphere. When learning new sentence patterns and newwords, firstly, the teacher instructs them briefly, and then let the students stretch out one of their fingers to spell and gesticulate. Meanwhile, let them pay attention to the change of speech and tone and

24、 encourage them to make dialogues and do writing by using the new words and sentence patterns. All of these can help students cultivate the habits of initiative learning and let them learn new knowledge at a relaxed, friendly atmosphere as well as reduce their sense of fear towards English.(三) Creat

25、ea Nice Language Environmentby CarryingthroughSituation-teachingSituation-teachingis put forwardby LiJilin,a superfine Chinese teacher of the Second Elementary School affiliatedto the Jiangsu Nantong NormalSchool. The so-called situation-teaching,is to arouse thestudents learning interest and achiev

26、e the learning effects of the congeniality of situation by creating concreteand lively scene of teaching and activity4 .Language learning can t deparat fgr ood language environment. The teacher should create the Englishlearningatmosphere for students as often as possible. However,because of the stud

27、entslimitedEnglishknowledge, if the teacher just blindly demands the students to communicate in English in class, it is likely thathe/she can ret ach the teaching aim as expected. So itdemands that the teachers should activelycreate interesting and practical situation based on the teaching content5

28、.Creating a language environment which is comfortable and full of flavor by using intuitional teaching aids or lively media is an effective way of bringing students into situation-teaching. Let the students act out a role respectively to do conversation performances.Do the integrated practice of lis

29、tening, speaking, reading and writing by their own initiative led by teachers. In this way, the teachers can make both of their body and heart engage in English learning and form a good cycle.(四) Arouse the Students Interestby Organizingthe DiversifiedClass TeachingThere used to be a problem in teac

30、hing: the teacher reads and then the students read after the teacher, the dullrepetitionofsentencepatternswithoutaffectionfromthewholeclass,memorizingwithoutcomprehending. M any students interest in learning English gradually vanished as time passes. In response tothis, we teachers should take advan

31、tage of rich language materials of new teaching materials, according to thepsychologi cal characteristics at studentsage, from games, music, discussion, pictures,movies and otherflexibleforms,to mobilizestudentsnon-intellectualfactors in language learning. Make students dedicate themselves to study

32、activities.(五) Help Students Set up a Sense of Accomplishment and Self-confidenceNew curriculum particularly emphasizeson each student s emostimonu,lating their interest in learning English to help them set up a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence, so that they can develop their comprehensiv

33、e language ability and improve their humanistic quality and enhance their practical ability in thecourse of study 6 .Liu Runqingalso said, “ Ifwe say that the outstanding grade in language learningcancultivate th e students positive attitude towards the second language culture and promote the learni

34、ng processitself, then, the more the students feel that their learning progress quickly(for example, to enable them to know fromtheir own more and more near the goal),the greater the power they continueto improvetheir own language level is 7 .“In class teaching, an appropriate degree of frustration

35、and failure play a positive role in the developmentof students. However, frequent and excessive failure will generate a“ loser m”entality among students, leading to their loss of interest in class teaching, serious inferiority, bad self-concept, lack of confidence in their study, and even weariness,

36、 truancy phenomenon 4 . Therefore, after some stage or a topic in teaching, teachers should timelygive praise and encouragement to the achievements ofstudents so that students have a sense ofaccomplishment,thereby enhancing theirself-confidence.Butteachers should also pay attentionto the appropriate

37、ness of their praise: neither can they indulge in criticism, nor be without principle or praise blindly.Otherwise, it will just get the opposite effect. Timely and appropriate praise of students is what the sun andraintoaflower,students willbeabletogrowvigorouslybathedinit.Thestrongerthesense of acc

38、omplishment of the learners broughtabout by learning a foreignlanguage is, the greater the learnersmotive of learning the foreign language is. In class teaching, teachers must actively create conditions to help students experience the success and progress in study, improvetheir self-concept and prog

39、ress instudy, improve their self-concept and self-efficacy(self- efficacyis people besliefs to be able to achieve a certain purpose during a certain period of time8 ), to stimulate their strong interest in learning and strong desire for knowledge, using the success of learning experience to promote

40、the healthy development of students.三、 Actively Carry out Extra-curricular TeachingFull-time middle school English syllabus indicates that,“ Extr-acurricular activities are good for students to increase knowledge, expand horizons, develop intelligenceand cultivate abilities,so that they can study vi

41、vidly,lively,activelyand initiatively. ”Renowned educator Mr lvWei calls extra-curricularactivitiesthe second class. It can be seen how much the old man attaches importance to extra-curricular activities. He notonly gives orientation to extra-curricularactivities,but also emphasizes the importance o

42、f the second class activities.Therefore, extra-curricularactivitiesare not dispensable. The teacher should have the quality to manage itwell.Carryingoutextra-curricularteachingprovidesanextensivespace forcontinuative development of broadening the knowledge, developing individuality, capabilities and

43、 cultivating ability, thus arouses great interest in study.In extra-curricular activities, carrying out a number of interesting activities consciously and intentionallyis also a good way to enhance studentsinterest and consolidate classroom knowledge. For instance, teachersgive English riddles and f

44、illing-word puzzles to students when arranging their homework; require the students to prepare some short stories or dialogues for duty report five minutes before class every day; hold Englishcalligraphycompetition,etc. So that the students experience not onlynervous feelingsin the process of prepar

45、ation, but also the sense of happiness when they are successful. In communication,teachers should promote students to greet in English;organize regular English Corner; organize students to watch English teaching video and take part in the performance of English stories and various games. Make the st

46、udents know more about the differences between the national language and English culture, as well as cultivate their keen observation and richimagination.In constant imperceptiveness, students wouldfallin love withEnglish unknowingly.四、ConclusionAll in all, interest is the base of success.
