Human Beings VS Viruses1 Imagine a virus that could travel like the flu一and kill like HIV . One so small that it wou 1 d be almost impossible to identify , let alone halt . Films like Outbreak play on our fears of a “killer virus” scenario , but those films are works of fiction, right
But the facts she unearthed didn t completely put her at ease .3For example, viruses are emerging more frequently than
、ever before. Forty years ago, around two new viruses were discovered every decade. Now the figure is more like two new viruses per year.2然而这正是贾尼丝阿库瓦一直在努力调查的东西。 4Ebola , Lassa , Marburg and HIV are frightening examples of
、 these deadly organisms. The death tolls where they strike are sobering. Even the flu virus can be a killer. We ve known about it for many decades now, but flu experts are still involved in a full-time race to keep up with the virus as it mutates .4埃博拉、拉沙、马尔堡病毒以及艾滋病病毒,都是这些致命微生物的可怕的例子。
5Our modem lifestyle increases the possibilities of viral attack by exotic organisms. For example, a virus presently located in a remote rain forest could, by means of air travel, be in a major city by this time tomorrow. We now l
、ive in such crowded cities that the scope for transmission of a virus which travels through air is greater than ever before.5我们的现代生活方式增加了身体遭受外来微生物病毒攻击的可能性。 6However, although all the ingredients for a killer-virus
、 scenario do undoubtedly exist, it s hard to find a medical expert who believes it s likely that the entire human race will be wiped out by one lethal strain. They tend to put it on a par with the likelihood of us being exterminated by a killer asteroid impact. This is because, although viruses can
、be super-efficient at attacking larger organisms, our bodies are phenomenally good at protecting us.6然而,尽管造成杀手病毒侵袭的各种可能性确实存在,却很少有医学专家相信整个 人类将被一种致命病毒所毁灭。 7Our skin presents the first barrier to infection. Then there are defens
、es inside the body which act as early warning systems between the cells and the white blood cells, helping to close down the activity of the viruses.7我们的皮肤是保护我们免受感染的第一道防线。 8These are very sophisticated processes which often take place without the body s o
、wner knowing anything about it一although sometimes the side-effects of the activity are those feelings of aching, shivering, sweating, temperature hike and loss of appetite that characterize a fever. Finally the body gets the measure of the virus, and can begin to manufacture antibodies specifically
、to act against it.8这是一些十分复杂的过程,经常在身体的主人毫不知晓的情况下发生,虽然有时会 出现一些副作用一一疼痛、颤抖、出汗、体温骤然升高和食欲减退等典型的发烧病症。 9Theres another reason to take heart. Although a particular virus could be virulent against humans, it s not likely to kill all of us. Genetic variations between members
、 of the human species mean that there will always be some people who don t succumb to a particular infection. This has already been demonstrated recently with HIV-and needless to say is a subject of much research since it may yield clues for the fighting of the virus for everyone else.9此外,还有一个令人振奋的原
1SARS has entered our daily v
、ocabulary. It is a disease previously unknown to all, but now we are living in its shadows. While SARS has become the center of attention, an ancient and more infectious disease is raising its ugly head. That disease is panic or irrational fear.2对于SARS,我们应该持一种健康的忧患态度,并采取审慎措施防止其蔓延。
2We need to have a healthy fear of SARS and to take prudent steps in preventing its spread. But panic fear creates what it fears. Fear of war leads a nation to adopt measures which unleash war. A skier falls as soon as h
、e/she begins to be afraid of falling. The panic which is generated by SARS will weaken our immune system, which will make us more susceptible to this dreaded disease.
.Face our FearsSARS is becoming a fearful disease because of its suddenness and its mysterious origin. We must deal with SARS and the fear it brings us at the same time. The best way to deal with fear is to face it, to un
、derstand what causes it and then deal with it rationally. The fact is that the majority of us who live in SARS-affected areas are not at risk. As of April 25, the chance of contracting SARS in Beijing is about 0. 005%. The worldwide recovery rate of those infected is 96%. Up to now, very few if any
、persons have been infected during air travel.4是恐惧心理的影响,而不是SARS,成了我们为未欠之债所付出的利息!It is the impact of fear, rather than SARS, that is the interest on a debt we do not owe!
Dealing with FearWhile SARS is known to be transmitted through close personal contact, fear is transmitted through all forms of media, including email. Only an infected SARS patient can transmit SARS to others. But fear can be transmitted by anyone, sometimes even with the best of int
、entions. As noted above, fear does hurt us. So, how do we deal with it?6首先,我们应该成认自己害怕,并继续尽可能正常生活下去,与此同时采取必要的 预防措施。 6First of all, we should admit our fear and keep moving forward by living our l
、ives as normally as possible while taking necessary precautions. For example, it is ridiculous to stop shaking hands with a healthy friend. At the same time, it is always a good practice to wash our hands before a meal一this should be done whether or not SARS exists. We should accept fear as a price of progress. SARS will hit us or it won t, but our fear will not pos
