©ISO2003—AllrightsreservedISO11898-1:2003(E)BasicconceptsofCANpropertiesCANshallhavethefollowingproperties:multi-masterpriority-basedbusaccess;non-destructivecontention-basedarbitration;multicastframetransferbyacceptancefiltering;remotedatarequest;configurationflexibility;system-widedataconsistency;errordetectionanderrorsignalling;automaticretransmissionofframesthathavelostarbitrationorhavebeendestroyedbyerrorsduringtransmission;distinctionbetweentemporaryerrorsandpermanentfailuresofnodesandautonomousswitching-offofdefectivenodes.FramesInformationonthebusshallbesentinfixedformatframesofdifferentbutlimitedlength.Whenthebusisidle,anyconnectednodemaystarttotransmitanewframe.BusaccessmethodWhenthebusisidle,anynodemaystarttotransmitaframe.Iftwoormorenodesstarttotransmitframesatthesametime,thebusaccessconflictshallberesolvedbycontention-basedarbitrationusingtheidentifier.Themechanismofarbitrationshallensurethatneitherinformationnortimeislost.Thetransmitterwiththeframeofhighestpriorityshallgainthebusaccess.InformationroutingInCANsystemsanodeshallnotmakeuseofanyinformationaboutthesystemconfiguration(e.g.nodeaddress).Instead,receiversacceptordonotacceptinformationbaseduponaprocesscalledframeacceptancefiltering,whichdecideswhetherthereceivedinformationisrelevantornot.Thereisnoneedforreceiverstoknowthetransmitteroftheinformationandviceversa.SystemflexibilityNodesmaybeaddedtotheCANnetworkwithoutrequiringanychangeinthesoftwareorhardwareofanynode,iftheaddednodeisnotthetransmitterofanydataframeandiftheaddednodedoesnotrequireanyadditionaltransmitteddata.DataconsistencyWithinCANaframeshallsimultaneouslybeacceptedeitherbyallnodesorbynone.Thusdataconsistencyshallbeapropertyofthesystemachievedbytheconceptsofmulticastandbyerrorhandling.©ISO2003—AllrCopyrightInternationalOrganizationforStandardizationightsreserved 5©ISO2003—AllrISO11898-1:2003(E)RemotedatarequestBysendingaremoteframe,anoderequiringdatamayrequestanothernodetosendthecorrespondingdataframe.Thedataframeandthecorrespondingremoteframeshallbenamedbythesameidentifier.ErrordetectionFordetectingerrors,thefollowingmeasuresshallbeprovided:monitoring(transmitterscomparethebitlevelstobetransmittedwiththebitlevelsdetectedonthebus);15-bitCRC;variablebitstuffingwithastuffwidthof5;framecheck;acknowledgecheck.ErrorsignallingandrecoverytimeCorruptedframesshallbeflaggedbyanytransmittingnodeandanynormallyoperating(error-active)receivingnode.Suchframesshallbeabortedandretransmittedaccordingtotheimplementedrecoveryprocedure(see8.3.4).Therecoverytimefromdetectinganerroruntilthepossiblestartofthenextframeshallbetypicallyseventeen(17)totwenty-three(23)bittimes[inthecaseofaheavilydisturbedbus,uptothirty-one(31)bittimes],iftherearenofurthererrors.ACKAllreceiversshallchecktheconsistencyofthereceivedframeandshallacknowledgeaconsistentframeandshallflaganinconsistentframe.Aframethatisnotacknowledgediscorruptedandshallbeflaggedbythetransmittingnode.AutomaticretransmissionFramesthathavelostarbitrationandframesthathavebeendisturbedbyerrorsduringtransmissionshallberetransmittedautomaticallywhenthebusisidleagain.Aframethatwillberetransmittedshallbehandledasanyotherframe,i.e.itparticipatesinthearbitrationprocesstogainbusaccess.IncaseofTTC,theautomaticretransmissionshallbedisabled(see9.2.5).FaultconfinementCANnodesshallbeabletodistinguishshortdisturbancesfrompermanentfailures.Defectivetransmittingnodesshallbeswitchedoff.Switchedoffmeansanodeislogicallydisconnectedfromthebus,sothatitcanneithersendnorreceiveanyframes(see).Error-activeAnerror-activenodeshallnormallytakepartinbuscommunicationandsendanactiveerrorflagwhenanerrorhasbeendetected.Theactiveerrorflagshallconsistofsix(6)consecutivedominantbitsandshallviolatetheruleofbitstuffingandallfixedformatsappearinginaregularframe(see).Error-passiveAnerror-passivenodeshallnotsendanactiveerrorflag.Ittakespartinbuscommunication,butwhenanerrorhasbeendetectedapassiveerrorflagshallbesent.Thepassiveerrorflagshallconsistofsix(6)CopyrightIternationalOrganizationforStandardization
