ThatisbadnewsfortheUnitedStates.ThepasttwodecadesofAmericanuniversitydevelopmenthavebeencharacterizedlargelybyself-satisfactionarisingfromsteadyprogressbythetop20orsoresearchuniversities.AndAmericaasanationhasbeencoasting.Since2000,theUnitedStateshaslostitsedgeinthegraduationofengineersandtechnologists.Thecountrynolongerdominatesscientificdiscovery,innovationorexploration.Mostimportant,theUnitedStateshasnotlaunchedanyefforttobuildnewinstitutionstoaccommodateitsincreasinglydiversepopulationofmorethan300million.

TheresultisthatAmerica'suniversitysystem,despiteitshistoricalpre-eminence,hasceasedtogrow.Furthermore,America'suniversitysystemhasfailedtoadapttothedramaticdemographicshiftsoccurringasaresultofsocialmobilityandimmigration.

Americaneedstorealizethatitsuniversitiesfacerealcompetitionfromtherestoftheworldtoattractthebestandthebrightest,tosecureresourcesandtoprovideenvironmentsthateducateandinspire.ThisisnottosaythatthebestAmericanuniversitiesarenolongertheleadersindiscoveryandinnovation.Itistosaythatthesuccessofthehigher-educationsystemmustbemeasuredbymorethanjustinnovations.Itslong-termperformancedependsonitsabilitytoprovidelearningtoabroadcrosssectionsofcitizens,toadvancenationalproficiencyinmathandscienceandtocreateanadaptableworkforce,aswellastodevelopanationalappreciationfordiscovery,entrepreneurshipandthecreativeprocess.
