I.IntroductionForeignfilmsare,inaway,aformofculturalexchangeviathevisuallanguage.However,thefilmdialoguesinthesourcelanguageseemtocauseaninsurmountablehindrancetothetargetaudience’sunderstandingofthefilm.Thismakeseitherdubbingorsubtitlingnecessarytoensurefullunderstandingonthepartofthetargetaudience.However,thetranslationoffilmtitlesisapeculiarpartoffilmtranslation.Filmtitleshowstheimportanttouchthatbringsthespecificworkoffilmarttolifeandleavesafirstimpressionontheaudience.Asthesayinggoes,firstimpressionsarehalfthebattle.Towinimmediateacceptability,intelligibilityandevenpopularityofthefilm,itisessentialtomakesurethatthetranslationofaforeignfilmtitlecreatesanimageofevocativepowerinthemindsofthetargetaudiencejustasthefilmtitledoeswhenitcrossesthemindsoftheaudiencespeakingthesourcelanguage.GrantedtheAcademyAwardsfortheirexcellenceinfilmproduction,OscarBestPictureWinnerscanalsobeseenasanepitomeofAmericanculturesandarethusintroducedintoChinaasamediumofculturalexchange.Hence,thetranslationsoftheirtitlesplayanimportantroleinculturalexchangeandproducefar-reachingeffectsupontheChineseaudienceasfilmtitlemirrorsthesoulofthefilm.ThisthesisattemptstopresentatentativepanoramaofthetranslationoftitlesofOscarBestPicturewinnersbyanalyzingthepossibilitiesandlimitationsoffilmtitletranslation,aswellasthetranslationmethodsadopted,theunderlyingtranslationprinciplesandtheeffectsachieved.Forthesakeofconvenience,thefirstfilmgrantedtheAcademyAwardofBestPictureintheyearof1929willbereferredtoasFilm1,thesecondintheyearof1930Film2,andsoonandsoforth.Thisthesis,dealingwithfilmtitletranslationintermsoftranslationadequacy,translationintertextualityandtranslator’svisibility,aimstobeprovocativeratherthanprescriptiveandbynomeanstosetrigidandsolidstandardsexclusivewithfilmtitletranslation.II.FeaturesofOscarBestFilms’TitlesIfthefilmisthecomprehensivebodybetweenartandbusinessvalue,thenthetitleofthefilmistheexpressionofthiscomprehensivebody.Intherichandcolorfulentertainmentindustry,thefilmwantstoattractcustomersawayfromTV,onlinegamesandotherentertainmentmediaBodyandgetintothecinema;themostimportantthingisthenameofthefilm.Throughout81stOscarbestfilmtitles,whichmainlyhavethreecharacteristics:Beingconciseandbrief,beingpopular,andbeingbrilliantA.BeingconciseandbriefBecauseofthemoviescreendimensionallimitation,movietitlesareoftenhighlymentionrefined.Theywillconcentratethemoviecontent;whichoftenusetheconciselanguage,anditgenerallyconsistofthreeEnglishwords.Forexample,"Sunrise""Hamlet""Casa-Blanca""Titanic""GrandHotel""TheGodfather""TheA-Partment""SlumdogMillionaire".Amongthe82departmentoftheawardwinningfilm,65FilmtitleforthreeorthefollowingEnglishwordscomposition,occupy80%,andthelongestmovietitlesonlyhas10words,namely"TheLordofTheRings:theReturnoftheKingB.BeingpopularThemovieisakindofmassmedia,whichisforordinarypeopleentertainment,andappreciation.TheArtisnotforafewexpertsandscholarstodoacademicresearch,soitshouldavoidobscurewords,difficultywords,uncommonword,orprofessionalstrongterms,butuseEasywordsforunderstanding,otherwiseitwillnotbepopularandfastSpreadamongthegeneralpublicwidely.Itistheawardwinningfilmfollowingtheprinciple.Forexample,"Winds""AllQuietontheWesternFront"and"GoingMyWay"Gone“WiththeWind""theLostWeekend""AmericanBeauty""MyFairLady""MillionDollarBaby.C.BeingbrilliantThemovieisakindofbusinessbehavior,soitmustpayattentiontotheboxofficevalue,otherwiseitcan'tliveanddevelop.Butontheboxofficesuccess,thetitlemusthavesuchagreatattractionthatdrawtheaudienceattentionsoastostimulatetheticketsdesiretogetintothecinema,i.e.itisthebrilliant,thought-provokingdrawtheaudience'seye,whichisthebiggestcharacteristicoffilmtitlesandisalsoavailablehighmagicweaponoftheboxoffice.Forexample,"ItHappenedOneNight(abreezeFlow)",Itiswhathappenedinthenightmainlyattractmanyviewerstogetintothecinema.Belikeagain,"SlumdogMillionaire(slumsthemillionaire)",slumsisthepoorman'sresidence,howcanappeararichWong?People'scuriosityisstimulated;sotheywanttogetintothecinemafiguringout.III.MethodsoftheTranslationofOscarBestFilms’TitlesOnthe81Oscarforbestfilm,wefindthattheChinesetitleTranslationmethodsofthreekinds:literaltranslation,freetranslation,transliteration.Specificseetable1:TranslationmethodsliteraltranslationLiberaltranslationTransliterationMovienumber30457Proportion55%37%8%,LiteraltranslationAsforthedefinitionoftheliteraltranslation,ithasalwaysbeencontroversial.Itisthecommonbeliefthattheformandcontentareconsistentwiththeoriginalisdefinedastheliteraltranslation.Literaltranslationiskeepthethebasicformandcontentunchanged.Atthesametime,therequirementofthelanguageiseasytounderstand.Theemphasisofliteraltranslationis"Like",claimingthattheoriginalcontentoftheoriginaltextaccordingtoform(includingwordorder,languageSequence,mood,structure,therhetoricmethod,etc)expressedinthetargetlanguage.FortheliteraltranslationoftheEnglishfilms,itisaccordingtothecharacteristicsofEnglishandChinese,themaximumretainthecontentandformofEnglishtitle.Theadvantagesofliteraltranslationare:onthebasisoftheabsorptionoftheusefulnewfactorsandreflectingtheobjectiveexistenceofthethingsandexoticemotionalappeal,itcanfurtheravoidtheinterferenceofobjectivefactors.Whenintheexpressionformwithouttheothermonarchitcanalsoachievegroundsfaithfultotheoriginaltextcontent,thetranslatornaturallyadopttheliteraltranslation.Languageisasocialphenomenon,isthecarrierofcultureandanimportantcomponentpartPoints.TherearemanydifferencesbetweenWesternandChineselanguageandculture,butwestillcanfindthegreatsimilarities.Inaddition,titleliteraltranslationcankeepthemovie"thetruth"theoriginalwind".Thisisfromanothersidetoexplainwhytranslatorsoftenchooseliteraltranslation.In82thebestpicture,thereare30filmtitleliteraltranslation,accountedfor37%.Intheactualfilmtranslation,sometitlesequenceinbothChineseandEnglishareequaltoeachotheralmostcompletely.whichcanusecompletelyone-to-onetranslation.Forexample,thefilm"Sunrise""GrandHotel""TheGodfather""TheLostWeekend""A-AmericanBeauty"and"TheLastEmperor""MillionDollarBa-By",respectivelyfor《日出》《大饭店》《教父》《失去的周末》《美国丽人》《末代皇帝》《百万宝贝》".Andsometitles,EnglishandChinesewordordernotconsistent,translationwillShallbeinaccordancewiththeChinesecharacteristics,changethesequenceofEnglish,butingeneralitisstillwithEnglishFormisconsistent.Forexample,thefilm"TheLifeofEmileZola""TheSoundofMusic"and"TheSilenceofLambs",respectivelyfor《埃米尔·左拉传》《音乐之声》《沉默的羔羊》".B.LiberaltranslationTheso-calledfreetranslation(liberaltranslation),"ismainlyreferstocatchtheimportantaspectofcontentandmetaphormeaning,sacrificeimage,combinedwiththecontexttoconveytheoriginalintentionflexibility".Thatis,thelanguageofthetranslatedtextperfectlyfollowstheprincipleoftheoriginallanguage,andwithoutconsiderstheexpressionformoftheoriginallanguage,butalsobefaithfultotheoriginalmeaning.TherearesimilarpointsbetweenEnglishandChineselanguage,after,butthedifferencesbetweenChineseandwesterninsocialdevelopment,educationbackground,aestheticvalue,customs,legalmethodrulesandethicsaresocommonthatwecan’tdirecttranslateinmostsituation.Ifweliteraltranslatestubbornly,itmaylosetheessenceoftheoriginaltitleatlest,oritmakesaudiencebewildered.Inthiscase,wecanonlydo“theinjuryForm,thegod"andcarryonthefreetranslation.Forexample,ifthefilm"GonewiththeWind"literaltranslatedintothe《随风逝去》,itwillhavenolastingappeal,butalsocan'treflecttheoriginalcolorfulconnotation.While,iffreetranslatedintothe《乱世佳人》,it'safeelingoflastingappeal,andalsoreflectthewarringeraappropriately,andtheherofightwiththefatehelplessly.Belikeagain,accordingtoCanadianwritermikeEr·wong(MichaelOndaatje)ofthebest-sellingnovelofthesamenameandinto"TheEnglishPatient",whichtellsduringtheworldwarIIera,theactorandtheactressgoacrossamoralboundaryandanromanticbeautifullovestory.NovelhonorInUKbookerprizeforliterature.Intheinternationalreputation,retainingtheoriginalitemisveryattractivetoEuropeaudience.AndtheChineseaudienceknewverylittleaboutthenovel,ifliteraltranslatedinto"Englishpatient",insteadseemingtrite,sotheothertranslatortranslatedinto《英伦情人》,itnotonlythepoeticflavorisabundant,andtightlyabidethefilmtouchingthelovetheme.Inaddition,thefilm"AllQuietontheWesternFront""Hamlet""ItHappenedOneNight""AllAboutEve""OneFlewOvertheCuckoo'sNest""theApartment“translatedinto《西线无战事》《王子复仇记》《一夜风流》《彗星美人》《飞越疯人院》《公寓春光》respectively.C.TransliterationTheso-calledtransliteration(transliteration),accordingtothesourcelanguagepronunciationrules,directlytranslatedintothetargetlanguageandthesameorsimilarwordspronunciationlanguage.Thisisthesimplestandthemostconvenienttranslationmethod,anditalsooneofthemostcommonlymethod.IftheTitleforrelatedpeople'snames,placesarefamiliartoaudience,orhastheimportanthistoricalsignificance,itshouldbetransliteration.Theadvantageoftransliterationistokeeptheoriginaltitleofrhythm,andbeappealtoawideraudiencewithitsstrongcharacteristicofdifferentregion.Thefilm"Bin-Hur""TomJones""Gandhi""Titanic",whichinturnfor《宾虚》《汤姆琼斯》《甘地》《泰坦尼克》.D.OthermethodsAneffectivewayofcontrastingfilmtitletranslationwithothertypesoftranslationinvolvesemphasizingthedistinctivefeaturesoffilmtitle,thelinearityofthefilmcontentandthemulti-linearpotentialofthetranslationofthefilmtitleinquestion.Insofarasfilmtitletranslationisconcerned,translationmaybedealtwithintermsoftranslationadequacy,whichcanbeclassifiedintothefollowingthreedivisions,thoughthismightbeanincompletereflectiononinconclusivegrounds.Anotherpropertyoffilmtitletranslationtoensurefunctionaladequacyisintelligibility,whichmeansmakingthetitletranslationbeimmediatelyacknowledgedbytheaudienceatfirstsight.Theadditionofsomeword(s)intothetitletranslationmaygoalongwaytowardsattainingintelligibility,suchastheadditionof“车”(car)inFilm78,“号”(ship)inFilm70,“正转”(biography)inFilm67,“杀”(killing)inFilm65,“野战”(fieldoperation)inFilm59,“母女”(motheranddaughter)inFilm56,“贩毒”(drugsmuggling)inFilm44,“将军”(general)inFilm43,“雾都”(fogcapital)inFilm41,“走红”(popularwithpeople)inFilm39,“彗星”(comet)inFilm23,“歌舞”(songanddance)inFilm9,and“喋血”(bloodshed)inFilm8.Theomissionofsomewordintheoriginaltitlealsoplaysaroleinimpartingadequatenaturalnesstothetranslation,suchastheomissionof“One”inFilm48,“My”inFilm37,and“Our”inFilm19,thoughsomethingoriginalismissingofcourse.=4\*ROMANIVValuesoftheTranslationofOscarBestFilms’TitlesA.InformationValueAstheOscarbestfilms,wecanappreciatethevalueoftheartononeside,andwecangettheinformationfromthemovie,wecanknowthewesterncultureandthedifferencesbetweenthechinaandEnglishlanguagecountry.1.1MarketabilityFilmtitleisasuggestiveexpressionofthefilm’sthemeandthetranslationofthefilmtitleissupposedtoequallyembodythesubject-matterofthefilm.Thetoppriorityofafilmaswellasthetranslationofafilmtitleisitscommercialconcern.Forthesakeofthemarketabilityofthefilmtitle,occasionallysacrificedisrigidfaithfulnesstotheoriginallinguisticform,whichmayfailtostimulatethetargetaudience’simaginationorreproducethecorrespondingimageinthemindofaudience.HencethefollowingthreepredominantfeaturesmarkingthetranslationofOscarBestPicturetitles.First,sometranslationsareheavilyloadedwithChineseculturesoastoenlistthetargetaudience’sardentcuriosityaboutthefilmtitleandthustheirinterestinwatchingthefilm.ThesetranslationsareofabsorbinginterestandpromisingmarketabilityduetotheChineseculturalelementscontainedinthem.TypicalexamplesincludeFilms79,71,67,42,33,22,20,13,12,11and9,whereconsiderableChinesecultureisclothedinsuchwordsas“无间道”,and“风云”“翁”,“阿”,“牛郎”,“桃色”,“奸雄”,“君子”,“蝴蝶”,“佳人”,“浮生”,and“大王”.Atthesightofthesetitletranslations,thetargetaudiencewillsurrenderthemselvestofantasyandfascinationaswellasthethrustandzesttowatchthefilmassoonaspossibletofindoutwhatthefilmisabout.Second,asmentionedin2.1.1,theuseoffour-characterphraseimpartsatouchofeleganceandexpressivenesstothetitlesandthusenhancesthemarketabilityofthefilms.Third,grantedthattransliterationandliteraltranslationorsemantictranslationisadoptedinmostcasesoftranslatingthetitlesoftheOscarBestPicturewinners,communicativetranslationisalsoemployedwhennecessaryandaddsappreciablytothemarketabilityofthefilmsinthetargetaudience’scultureandsociety.CommunicativetranslationcharacterizesthetranslationofthetitlesofFilms79,57,41,13,12,11,7,6,and4,wheredeviationfromtheoriginallinguisticformandliteralmeaningisself-evident.1.2ArtisticAdequacyFilmisauniqueartofconveyingstoriesandideasthroughthevisuallanguageofpictureandthesynchronizingaudiospeech.Andfilmtitleis,inaway,apreviewofthefilmandtheartisticadequacyoffilmtitlegoeshandinhandwiththepopularityofthefilmproper.Sothetranslatorshouldputapremiumontheartisticadequacyoffilmtitletranslation,whichmaybeapproachedandrealizedbymeansofthefollowingthreeattributesoffilmtitle.CulturalValue1.1LinguisticIntratextualityLinguisticintratextualityarisesamongtheliteralmeaning,semanticmeaning,referentialmeaningandassociativemeaningofthefilmtitlessuchasthoseofFilms78,72,70,66,14,and7.Linguisticintratextualitymakesthetranslatormoreresourcefulandresoluteinmakingthedeliberateanddesirablechoicetonegotiatethenotorioustranslationpitfalls.Thesemanticmeaningof“Crash”inFilm78and“List”inFilm66isambiguousifnotbasedonthepicturesorthevisuallanguageofthefilms.AccordingtothecontentofFilm78,thetitlemeansneitherplanecrashnortraincrash,butthephysicalcollisionofcarcrash,whichisalsoametaphorforracialandsocialcollisions.ThentheChineseequivalentofcarcrashisappliedinthetranslation.Similarly,inaccordancewiththefilmstory,thesemanticmeaningof“listofnames”(名单)isexploitedinthetitletranslationofFilm66.ThetitletranslationofFilm72istheliteralmeaningoftheoriginal“AmericanBeauty”,whichisnotabeauty,butatypeofrosevirtuallypresentintheon-screenstoryaboutthedark-sideofanAmericanfamily.Thefilmthemeisaboutthenatureofbeautyinacultureandtheprotagonistisnotaparticularbeauty.Nevertheless,theliteralmeaningisstillacceptableasatitletranslationsincetheword“丽人”(beauty)isitselfaneye-catchingone.InthetitletranslationofFilm70,thereferentialmeaningoftheoriginalispreferredandthustheword“号”(ship)isaddedtothetransliterationoftheshipname.However,inFilm14,asvalleycoexistswithmountain,theassociativemeaningof“GreenValley”(翠谷),viz.“BlueMountain”(青山)ismostfavoredandimmediatelyfollowedby“GreenValley”tocoinafour-characterChinesephrase,whichresemblesthesetphrase“青山绿水”(literallymeaning“bluemountainsandgreenwaters”andusuallyusedtodescribebeautifulsceneryandsuggestone’sloveofthebeautifulland).InFilm7,thethingthathappenedonenightisacomicromance;sothereferentialmeaningof“It”inthetitleis“romance”(风流),whichisallowedforinthetitletranslation.1.2CulturalExtratextualityExtratextualityconcerningtheChinesecultureandtheEnglishcultureisresponsibleforthetitletranslationsoffilmssuchasFilms71,67,42,41,37,22,20,13,12,11,9,6and4.Take“牛郎”inthetitletranslationofFilm42and“cowboy”intheoriginal.Theyseemtobeequivalentintermsofthesharedmeaningof“aboywhotakescareofcows”.Yettheyhavetotallydifferentculturalmeaningsaccordingtomodernusage.“牛郎”mayfigurativelyrefertothehusbandofahappilymarriedcouple,whilethesentimentalityofthiswordderivesfromHerd-boy,thecharacterinthehouseholdmythologyabouttwoloversandthiswordisevenidentifiedwiththestarAltairintheChineseculture.Yetapopularizedimageof“cowboy”istheadventurousandheroichorsemaninthee
