“Althoughthechoiceofwatertemperatureduringasinglehandwashmayappearminor,whenmultipliedbythenearly800billionhandwashesperformedbyAmericanseachyear,thispracticeresultsinmorethan6millionmetrictonsofCO2equivalentemissionsannually,”shesaid.

That’sroughlyequaltotheemissionsoftwocoal-firedpowerplants,or1,250,000passengervehicles,overthecourseofayear.It’shigherthanthegreenhousegasemissionsofsmallcountrieslikeElSalvadororArmenia,andisaboutequivalenttotheemissionsofBarbados.IfallUScitizenswashedtheirhandsincoolerwater,itwouldbelikeeliminatingtheenergy-relatedcarbonemissionsof299,700UShomes,orthetotalannualemissionsfromtheUSzincorleadindustries.

Theresearchersfoundthatcloseto70percentofrespondentssaidtheybelievethatusinghotwaterismoreeffectivethanwarm,roomtemperature,orcoldwater,despitealackofevidencebackingthatup,saidCarrico.Herstudynotedresearchthatshoweda“strongcognitive(认知的)connection”betweenwatertemperatureandhygieneinboththeUnitedStatesandWesternEurope,comparedtoothercountries,likeJapan,wherehotwaterisassociatedmorewithcomfortthanwithhealth.
