Theresultsshowthatparentswhoviewmathabilityaschangeablearemorelikelytogiveprocessresponsesfocusedontheirchildren’sstrategyuseandeffortsratherthantheirIQorotherpersonalqualities.Incontrast,parentswhobelievemathabilityisunchangeableandthatmathfailurecan’tbeconstructivegivemorepersonresponses.Parentswithhighexpectationsfortheirchildrengivebothresponses.Whileresponsesfocusedonstrategyandeffortsarenotrelatedtoanyachievementresults,childrenwhoreceivemoreresponsesabouttheirpersonalqualities—especially,relatedtofailure—aremorelikelytoavoidhardermathproblems,showhigherlevelsofmathanxiety,andscoreloweronmathachievementtests.
