Meetinheraspectandhereyes,在她的仪容和秋波里呈现:都交汇她那玉容秋波里,交会于她的容颜和眼波,

Thusmellow'dtothattenderlight耀目的白天只嫌光太强,融成一片柔美的光,融成一片恬淡的清光——

Whichheaventogaudydaydenies.它比那光亮柔和而幽暗。这光,即便是华艳的白昼,上苍也拒绝施舍。浓艳的白天得不到的恩泽。Oneshadethemore,oneraytheless,

增加或减少一分明与暗增一末暗影,减一缕光影,多一道阴影,少一缕光茫,

Howpure,howdeartheirdwelling-place.指明它的来处纯洁而珍贵。(无名氏将后两句合译为一句,所以此处空缺)这神圣寓所的纯洁、高贵。

Andonthatcheekando'erthatbrow呵,那额际,那鲜艳的面颊,眼角眉梢,如此温柔,如此恬静那脸颊,那眉宇,幽娴、沉静,

Sosoft,socalm,yeteloquent,如此温和,平静,而又脉脉含情,却蕴着千言万语,

--GeorgeGordonByron(1788-1824)1814年,拜伦在好友詹姆士.W.韦伯斯特的引荐下,首度到西莫路的家中,见到了美丽的威尔莫特夫人.MrsWilmot到底有多美丽,我们不曾亲眼目睹,但是诗人的作品却留下了他惊艳时的心情.MrsWilmot当天穿着闪亮的长裙,如见天人的拜伦那晚心事忡忡,不苟言语,回到家后,要了一杯白兰地酒,举杯祝表妹身体健康之后,就回房休息了.丘比特和缪斯的魂魄一直在他心头萦绕,第二天他就写下了这首永垂不朽的,<<SheWalksInBeauty>>.还是让拜伦来赞扬我们的女神吧.DiscussiononthepoemThefirstcoupleoflinescanbeconfusingifnotreadproperly.Toooftenreadersstopattheendofthefirstlinewherethereisnopunctuation.Thisisanenjambed跨行连续(asopposedtoCAESURA休止)line,meaningthatitcontinueswithoutpauseontothesecondline.Thatshewalksinbeautylikethenightmaynotmakesenseasnightrepresentsdarkness.However,asthelinecontinues,thenightisacloudlessonewithbrightstarstocreateabeautifulmellowglow.Thefirsttwolinesbringtogethertheopposingqualitiesofdarknessandlightthatareatplaythroughoutthethreeverses.Theremaininglinesofthefirstverseemployanothersetofenjambedlinesthattellusthatherfaceandeyescombineallthat’sbestofdarkandbright.Nomentionismadehereorelsewhereinthepoemofanyotherphysicalfeaturesofthelady.Thefocusofthevisionisuponthedetailsofthelady’sfaceandeyeswhichreflectthemellowedandtenderlight.Shehasaremarkablequalityofbeingabletocontaintheoppositesofdarkandbright.Thethirdandfourthlinesarenotonlyenjambed,butthefourthlinebeginswithanirregularityinthemetercalledametricalsubstitution.Thefourthlinestartswithanaccentedsyllablefollowedbyanunaccentedone,ratherthantheiambicmeteroftheotherlines,anunaccentedsyllablefollowedbyanaccentedone.Theresultisthattheword"Meet"receivesattention,anemphasis.Thelady’suniquefeatureisthatopposites"meet"inherinawonderfulway.Thesecondversetellsusthattheglowofthelady’sfaceisnearlyperfect.Theshadesandraysareinjusttherightproportion,andbecausetheyare,theladypossessesanamelessgrace.Thisconveystheromanticideathatherinnerbeautyismirroredbyherouterbeauty.Herthoughtsaresereneandsweet.Sheispureanddear.Thelastverseissplitbetweenthreelinesofphysicaldescriptionandthreelinesthatdescribethelady’smoralcharacter.Heresoft,calmglowreflectsalifeofpeaceandgoodness.Thisisarepetition,anemphasis,ofthethemethatthelady’sphysicalbeautyisareflectionofherinnerbeauty.LordByrongreatlyadmiredhiscousin’sserenequalitiesonthatparticularnightandhehasleftuswithaninspiredpoem.ThepoemwaswrittenshortlybeforeLordByron’smarriagetoAnnaMilbankeandpublishedshortlyafterthemarriage.Shewalksinbeauty,likethenightOfcloudlessclimesandstarryskies;Andallthat'sbestofdarkandbrightMeetinheraspectandhereyes:Thusmellow'dtothattenderlightWhichheaventogaudydaydenies.Oneshadethemore,oneraytheless,Hadhalfimpair'dthenamelessgraceWhichwavesineveryraventress,Orsoftlylightenso'erherface;WherethoughtsserenelysweetexpressHowpure,howdeartheirdwellingplace.Andonthatcheek,ando'erthatbrow,Sosoft,socalm,yeteloquent,Thesmilesthatwin,thetintsthatglow,Buttellofdaysingoodnessspent,Amindatpeacewithallbelow,Aheartwhoseloveisinnocent!LordByron’sopeningcoupletto"SheWalksInBeauty"isamongthemostmemorableandmostquotedlinesinromanticpoetry.Theopeninglinesareeffortless,graceful,andbeautiful,afittingmatchforhispoemaboutawomanwhopossesseseffortlessgraceandbeauty.AboutthePoem,"SheWalksInBeauty"InJune,1814,severalmonthsbeforehemetandmarriedhisfirstwife,AnnaMilbanke,LordByronattendedapartyatLadySitwell?.Whileattheparty,LordByronwasinspiredbythesightofhiscousin,thebeautifulMrs.Wilmot,whowaswearingablackspangledmourningdress.LordByronwasstruckbyhiscousin?darkhairandfairface,theminglingofvariouslightsandshades.Thisbecametheessenceofhispoemabouther.Accordingtohisfriend,JamesW.Webster,"IdidtakehimtoLadySitwell?partyinSeymourRoad.Hethereforthefirsttimesawhiscousin,thebeautifulMrs.Wilmot.WhenwereturnedtohisroomsinAlbany,hesaidlittle,butdesiredFletchertogivehimatumblerofbrandy,whichhedrankatonetoMrs.Wilmot?health,thenretiredtorest,andwas,Iheardafterwards,inasadstateallnight.Thenextdayhewrotethosecharminglinesuponher.ShewalksinBeautyliketheNight.Thepoemwaspublishedin1815.AlsointhatyearLordByronwroteanumberofsongstobesettotraditionalJewishtunesbyIsaacNathan.LordByronincluded"SheWalksinBeauty"withthosepoems.Well,youcouldsay"thiswomanispure,lovely,andkind."...although,paraphrasingkindofdestroysthewholepurposeofpoetry.Butwhatever.We'llblameitonyourteacher.Paraphrasehuh?
