communicatewitheachother.”

Generativeartificialintelligence(GenAI)hasentered

themarketatanunprecedentedpace,withthemajority

ofresearchersandcliniciansawareofitsbiggestapplications,includingChatGPT,withinashortperiodoflaunch.

WhatisGenAI?

GenAI,shortforgenerativeartificial

intelligence,referstoacategoryofartificialintelligencesystemsandmodelsthathave

theabilitytogeneratedata,content,orotheroutputsthataresimilartothosecreatedby

humans.TheseAIsystemsaredesignedto

producenewandoriginalcontentratherthansimplyprocessoranalyzeexistingdata.1

ChatGPT,Open.ai’sgenerativeAIplatform,reached100

millionuserswithintwomonthsofitslaunchinNovember2022,makingitthefastestgrowingconsumerapplicationeveratthetime.3

ArtificialIntelligence(AI)hadbeenprevalentinourlivesformanyyearsbeforeGenAI,helpingussearch,buyandnavigate,amongmanyotherthings.ButthedevelopmentofGenAIisboostingtheimpactofthetechnologyoverall:estimatessuggestitwillgeneratetrillionsofdollarseveryyear.4ThisisreflectedintheaccelerationofinvestmentinGenAI,leapingfrom$4.3billionin2022to$22.4bn

in2023.5

ThefutureofGenAI

Theexpectationisthatthereturnoninvestmentwillbe

worthwhile.AccordingtoconsultingfirmEY,investment

inAIcouldadd1%toglobalGDPby2033–theequivalentof$1tn.6EYexpectstheUStoleadthisinvestment,thoughtheynotethatChinaandEuropearenotfarbehind.

Evenmoreoptimistically,theMcKinseyGlobalInstitute

estimatesGenAIwilladd$4.4tninvaluetotheglobal

economyannually.4GoldmanSachsgoesevenfurther,

predictinganincreaseof7%inglobalGDP–almost$7tn.7

Wherearethesebenefitscomingfrom?GenAIis

transformingtheverynatureofwork–andit’shappeningmuchfasterthanwethought.McKinseyprojectsAIwill

automatehalfoftoday’sworkactivitiesbetween2040

and2060,morethanadecadeearlierthanprevious

estimates,thankstoaccelerationofthetechnology’s

developmentandusage.TheresultsfromoursurveyalsoindicatethattheimpactofAIonresearchandhealthcarewillbetransformativeoverthenextfewyears.

Likelyimpactonresearchandhealthcare

McKinseyindicatesthatofthefourareaslikelytoaccountforthree-quartersoftheaddedvalueofGenAIisresearchanddevelopment,whereGenAIcould“deliverproductivitywithavaluerangingfrom10to15percentofoverallR&Dcosts.”4Thisisnotableinthepharmaceuticalsandmedicalproductsindustry,whereGenAIisexpectedtohavea

relativelyhighimpactintermsofR&Dproductivity.In

comparison,theythinkhealthcareislikelytoseeagreaterimpactinsupplychainandlogisticsproductivity.

AsnotedinElsevier’sClinicianoftheFutureReport2023,AIhasgainedattentioninhealthcareforitspotentialtoautomatecertaintasks,suchasfillinginformsor

summarizingnotes,therebyincreasingefficiencyandsavingclinicians’time.8

ButthepotentialofAIgoesfarbeyondboosting

productivity.AnMITTechnologyReviewInsightsreportdescribeshealthandmedicineas“aproductivetestinggroundforAI,”withapplicationsincludingtracking

diseasespreadandsupportingdrugdiscovery,aswell

assummarizingmedicalnotesandevencommunicatingwithpatients.9

TherearejustasmanyopportunitiesforAIinresearch.AsBillGatesnotedonhisblogGatesNotes,“AIs

willdramaticallyacceleratetherateofmedical

breakthroughs.”2Inparticular,hementionsthelargeamountofbiologicaldataresultingfromcomplex

systems,whichAIapplicationsarealreadyhelpingresearchersuntangleandunderstand.

AIisalreadybeingusedinclinicaltrials.Giventhat

pharmacompaniesspendabout20%oftheirrevenueonresearchanddevelopment,theMcKinseyGlobalInstituteestimatesthatGenAIcouldcontribute$60bnto$110bnayeartotheindustry.4Specifically,applicationsincludeidentifyingleadmolecules,whereGenAIcouldcutdownresearchtimefrommonthstoweeks.GenAIalsohas

aroletoplayinidentifyingfindingsduringclinicaltrials,especiallywiththeincreaseindigitaltechnologiesusedinclinicalresearch.

CompaniesareembracingGenAI

OrganizationsaroundtheworldarealreadyembracingnewAI-poweredtechnologiestoimproveefficiencyandboostinnovation.A2022MITTechnologyReviewInsightsreportshowedthat94%oforganizationswereusingAI,thoughonly14%aimedtoachieve“enterprise-wise”AIby2025.9DevelopmentssincethisreportclearlyshowthepotentialapplicationofAI,GenAIischangingthepicturerapidlyacrosseveryfunction,includingthemorecreativetaskspreviouslyconsideredinherentlyhuman.

Indeed,inaglobalEYsurveyofcorporateCEOs,62%

acknowledgedtheurgencyofactingonGenAI,inthiscasetopreventtheircompetitorsfrom“gainingastrategic

edge.”6Butthesurveyalsouncoveredadilemma:61%

ofbusinessleaderssharedreservationsaroundGenAI

becauseof“theuncertaintiessurroundingtheformulationandexecutionofanAIstrategy.”

Beforeorganizationscanbenefitfromthepotentialof

GenAI,thesereservations,andriskssuchasbiasand

privacythatareinherentinthetechnology,willneedto

beaddressed.AccordingtoEY,organizationswillneedtoinvestininfrastructureaswellastechnologyandskillsintheirworkforce.6Almost70%ofrespondentstoanMIT

TechnologyReviewInsightssurveysaidaunifieddata

platformforanalyticsandAIiscrucial.Thisincludes‘datalakehouses’–ahybridofdatalakes,wheredataisstoredinitsoriginalform,anddatawarehouses,systemsfor

analyzingandreportingdatafrommultiplesources.10

Gettingtheworkforceonboard

Inordertounlockitsfullpotential,it’snotjustthe

companiesandinstitutionsthatwillneedtobeonboard,butalsothepeoplewhowillbeusingit.AsnotedbyMITTechnologyReviewInsights,“Riskaversionandculturalfactors,likefearoffailure,alsoneedtobeaddressedtodriveAIadoptionintheworkforce.”

Unlikethekindofautomationthathaschangedthe

wayweworkinthepast,forexamplewiththeadventofmachinerytotakeonmanualtasks,emergentGenAItechnologywilllikelyhavethebiggestimpacton

knowledgework,tasksinvolvingcreativity,collaborationanddecisionmaking.

AccordingtoMcKinsey,GenAIhasonlyshiftedthepotentialtoautomatephysicalworkby0.5%.11

Incomparison,thepotentialtotechnicallyautomate

theapplicationofexpertiseincreasedfrom24.5%in2017to58.5%in2023,thankstoGenAI.

ThereportalsosuggeststhatGenAIislikelytohave

amajorimpactonSTEMprofessionals:theestimated

technicalautomationpotentialofactivitiesperformedbythisgroupwas28%in2017;withGenAI,thisdoubledto

57%in2023.Numbersaresimilarbyeducationlevel,withGenAIdoublingtheautomationpotentialforthoseinroleswithamaster’s,PhDorhigher.4

Today’sSTEMprofessionalsarealreadyusingAIorare

expectingtouseit.Elsevier’sResearchFutures2.0report

releasedinearly2022showedthat8%ofresearcherswerealreadyusingAIextensivelyintheirresearch,principallytohelpwithanalysisandprocessinglargedatasets.12

IntheClinicianoftheFutureReport2022,overhalf(56%)ofclinicianssurveyedexpectedtobemakingmostoftheirdecisionsusingclinicaldecisionsupporttoolsthatuseAIin10years’time.13

ConcernaboutGenAI

Thepictureisnotsimple,though:cliniciansandthe

generalpublicreportbeingexcitedbutalsoconcernedaboutGenAI.15InClinicianoftheFuture2023,asizableminority,28%,ofclinicianssaidtheyfinditundesirableforAItobeusedinclinicaldecision-makingtools

inthefuture.16

Thereareseveralcommonlyreportedconcernsamongvariousgroups,primarilyincludingaccuracyandtheriskofmisinformation,bias,privacyandsecurity,andtoalesserextent,ethicalissues.15Manyofthese

concernsarenotuniquetoGenAI,butthetechnologyisamplifyingthem.

Understandingresearchers’andclinicians’views

TheGenAIlandscapeischangingrapidly,andinordertoensurethetechnologyhasapositiveimpactonresearchandhealthcare,it’simportanttomonitortheviewsof

thoseintheseareas.

GiventherapidriseofGenAItools,particularlyChatGPT,itisperhapsunsurprisingthatmostpeopleareatleast

awareofitsexistence.GlobalCounselsurveysshowthatabout90%ofpeopleintheUK,USandGermanyhave

heardofGenAI.17Similarly,a2023surveybyPewResearchCentershowedthat90%ofAmericanssaythey“have

heardatleastalittleaboutartificialintelligence.”18However,drillingdownrevealsonlyaboutone-thirdhaveheardalotaboutit.

Thecurrentsurveyreflectsthesefindings:almostall

(96%)haveheardofAI.AwarenessishighestinChina

at99%(seeaccompanyingdatabookforfulldetails).
