Introduction

IntheyearssinceTechnoVision’sinception,ourdependencyontechnologyhasincreased

exponentially.Technologybringsuscloser,allowingustooperate–facilitatingcollaboration,creativity,andcommunity.Somuchsothattheverynotionofa

businessnotusingtechnologyseems

incomprehensible.Whatmayoncehavebeenperceivedasasuperfluousluxury,isnowwholeheartedlypartofthepackage.Anditpertainsinequalpartstowhatwe,atleastsofar,callbusinessandtechnology.

Thetechnologicaluniversecontinuestoexpand,

augment,andadaptataphenomenalrate.Physicalandvirtualworldsmerge,robotsteachthemselves,andthequantumrealmloomsevernearer.Allofthiscanbe

daunting:toknowwhattodo,wheretogo,andhowtoadapt,allforthebenefitoftheorganization.To

respondsuccessfully,itrequiresmoredialoguethan

ever,betweeneveryoneintheorganization,regardlessofbusinessunit,role,ortechnologicalaffinity.

needed.Eachplayercanbeprovidedherowncarddeck(typicallyanexcellent

giveaway,servingasareminderofthesessionafterwards).Alternatively,everytablehasjustonecarddeck.Oneoftheplayersisassignedthecarddealerasshewill

managethechosencombinationofcardsandwillalsostayattheassignedtabletotellthestorytothemembersofothertables—whiletherestoftheplayerswillrotateinacarouselaroundtheothertables.

Introducingtheworkshop

Theworkshopopenswithashort,high-levelintroductionofthe

TechnoVisionframework,thestructureoftheclusters(the‘what’)

anddesignprinciples(the‘how’)andrelatableexamples.Relyontheattendeestostudythecontentofthecardsthemselvesafter

selectingthemandprovidejustenoughinformationtohelpthemmaketherightchoicesforthecards.Then,describetheprocessofformingtables,buildingatechnologybusinessstory,andreporting

out.Theproblem-ownerdescribesthechallengeathand;itcanbeastrategicquestion,aconundrum,aquestforideas,aprocess

redesign,aservice,oraproduct.

Theformat

Formthetableteams.Theteamsizewilldependonthenumberofpeople,time,andtablesavailable(morereport-outstakemoretime).

Eachtableteamwilldiscussandselectthecardsthatareofinterestforthechallengeathand.Theindividualplayerscandothisbyfirststudyingtheirowndeck(iftheyhaveit),orjointlyexploringonedeck(ifonlyoneisavailablepertable).Theselectionshouldtypically

consistofaminimumof3cardsandamaximumof7(5seemsagoodaverage).

Theteamsshouldstudythecards,readingtheelevatorpitchesand

maybescanningtheuniqueQRcodeswiththeirsmartphonesfor

moreinformation.Ifthecardsareexaminedbyindividuals,team

memberscanthenexplainthecardstoeachother.Bybuildingon

eachother’sideas,thedigitalstorygraduallycomestogetherthroughthecombinationofcards.Intheendadigitalroyalflushiscreated,

containingtheselectedcardsinanagreedsequenceandwithanagreedstoryline.

Take15to30minutestobuildatechnologybusinessstory,dependingonhowmuchtimeisavailable.

Reportingback

Eachtablewillvisitallothertables,onarotatingbasis.However,theselectedcarddealerwillstayallthetimeathertable,tellingthe

createdstorytothemembersofthevisitingtables—ofcourse

supportedbytheselected‘royalflush’cards.Thestorytellingshouldnottakemorethan5minutesperround,keepingthestorycrispandtothepoint.Teamscouldphotographthefinalcardpositionsforlateruse.Thevisitingteamsthenprovidefeedbacktothecarddealer,

highlightingbothwhattheylearnedfromtheparticularcardstory

andwhattheirownstorycouldaddtoit.Afeedbackroundshouldbetime-boxedto5to10minuteseach,dependingonthetimeavailable.

Atthefinalround,theplayersjointheirowntableagain,evaluatingandsummarizingtheinsightstheygained,aswellashearingfromthecarddealerwhatshehasobservedandheard.

Everplayed‘Texashold‘em’?It’sakindofpokergamethatworksasfollows—twocards,knownasholecards,are

dealtfacedowntoeachplayer,andthenfivecommunity

cardsaredealtfaceupinthreestages.Thestagesconsistofaseriesofthreecards(theflop),lateranadditionalsingle

card(theturnorfourthstreet),andafinalcard(theriverorfifthstreet).Eachplayerseeksthebestfivecardpokerhand

fromanycombinationofthesevencards:thefivecommunitycardsandtheirtwoholecards.

WhynottransformthisintoaTechnoVisioncardgame,thatwe’llcall'Technohold‘em'?

Aminimumoftwoandamaximumoffourpeople,plusa

carddealerwillbesittingatatable.Thefacilitatorwillactasthedealer.Thedealerwillshufflethedeckanddealseach

participanttwocards.

Optional:Ifaplayerdoesnotlikethecardssheisdealt,shecouldrequesttwonewones,justonetime.

Thedealerthenplacesthreefurthercardsonthetable.

Eachoftheparticipantsgetssometimetocreatetheir

story—yetagainaddressingachosensubject,challenge,oropportunity—withthefivecardsthatareonthetable.

Eachofthestorieswillbedifferentsinceeachplayerwillhavetheirowntwocards,whicharethedifferentiators.

Afterthisinitialstory,thedealerwillthendeal'theturn'tobringincardnumbersix.Theparticipantswillthenhavetochoosefiveofthecardstoenhancetheirstory,butfocusing

onthesixthcardandremovingpartoftheinitialstory,sinceonecardhaschanged.Theyhowevercannotdroponeof

theirowncards.

Afterthesecondstory,thedealerwillthendeal'theriver'.Theplayerwillchoosethebestfivecards,eitheronthe

tableorintheirhands,andwillthenhavetoadjustthestoryagain.

Thisfunexercisewillmaketheplayersthinkmoreaboutthepossibleconnectionsoftrends,andallowtheircreative

brainstoflowtothefullextent.

Variant

Insteadofthedealerdealingtheinitialtwocards,the

playerschoosethosecardsthemselves,basedontheideasthattheyhave,orwhatfitsthembest(inawaylikethe

earlierdescribed‘pickacard’activity).Thiswillallowthemtoformtheirownstorymoretostartwith.Therestofthecardgamewillbethesame,wherethedealerwilldealtheothercardsina3-1-1fashiontoensureeveryonecanmaketheirstories.

Iftimeislimited,thenthegamecanbereducedtoafive

cardstotalgame,wheretwoholdcardsaredealtorchosen,andtheinitialdealingisonecardinsteadofthree.This

wouldallowforstorycreationwiththreecards,whichwillthenbecompletedby'theturn'and'theriver'cards.

TheDigitalPictureisaCapgeminimethodologyusedtoproduceanaccurateimageofan

enterprise’stechnologybusinessposition.Itisproducedbycombiningthepointsofview—

expectationscomparedwithrealityandexperience—ofvariousstakeholders,fromtop

managementtocustomersoftheenterprise.TheDigitalPicturecanbeusefullycompletedanddetailedwithaTechnoVision-basedimageoftheenterprise’spositionintechnologybusiness
