WhatisDSP?

DSP,orDigitalSignalProcessing,asthetermsuggests,istheprocessingofsignalsbydigitalmeans.Asignalinthiscontextcanmeananumberofdifferentthings.Historicallytheoriginsofsignalprocessingareinelectricalengineering,andasignalheremeansanelectricalsignalcarriedbyawireortelephoneline,orperhapsbyaradiowave.Moregenerally,however,asignalisastreamofinformationrepresentinganythingfromstockpricestodatafromaremote-sensingsatellite.

Theterm“digital”comesfrom“digit”,meaninganumber,so“digital”literallymeansnumerical.Adigitalsignalconsistsofastreamofnumbers,usually(butnotnecessarily)inbinaryform.Theprocessingofadigitalsignalisdonebyperformingnumericalcalculations.

AnalogandDigitalSignals

Inmanycases,thesignalofinterestisinitiallyintheformofananalogelectricalvoltageorcurrent,producedforexamplebyamicrophoneorsomeothertypeoftransducer.Insomesituations,suchastheoutputfromthereadoutsystemofaCD(compactdisc)player,thedataisalreadyindigitalform.AnanalogsignalmustbeconvertedintodigitalformbeforeDSPtechniquescanbeapplied.Ananalog-to-digitalconverterorADC.Thisgeneratesadigitaloutputasastreamofbinarynumberswhosevaluesrepresenttheelectricalvoltageinputtothedeviceateachsamplinginstant.

SignalProcessing

Signalscommonlyneedtobeprocessedinavarietyofways.Forexample,theoutputsignalfromatransducermaywellbecontaminatedwithunwantedelectrical“noise”.Theelectrodesattachedtoapatient’schestwhenanECGistakenmeasuretinyelectricalvoltagechangesduetotheactivityoftheheartandothermuscles.Thesignalisoftenstronglyaffectedby“mainspickup”duetoelectricalinterferencefromthemainssupply.

Processingthesignalusingafiltercircuitcanremoveoratleastreducetheunwantedpartofthesignal.Increasinglynowadays,thefilteringofsignalstoimprovesignalqualityortoextractimportantinformationisdonebyDSPtechniquesratherthanbyanalogelectronics.

ApplicationsofDSP

DSPtechnologyisnowadayscommonplaceinsuchdevicesasmobilephones,multimediacomputers,videorecorders,CDplayers,harddiscdrivecontrollersandmodems,andwillsoonreplaceanalogcircuitryinTVsetsandtelephones.AnimportantapplicationofDSPisinsignalcompressionanddecompression.Signalcompressionisusedindigitalcellularphonestoallowagreaternumberofcallstobehandledsimultaneouslywithineachlocal“cell”.

DSPsignalcompressiontechnologyallowspeoplenotonlytotalktooneanotherbutalsotoseeoneanotherontheircomputerscreens,usingsmallvideocamerasmountedonthecomputermonitors,withonlyaconventionaltelephonelinelinkingthemtogether.InaudioCDsystems,DSPtechnologyisusedtoperformcomplexerrordetectionandcorrectionontherawdataasitisreadfromtheCD.

ThearchitectureofaDSPchipisdesignedtocarryoutsuchoperationsincrediblyfast,processinghundredsofmillionsofsampleseverysecond,toprovidereal-timeperformance:thatis,theabilitytoprocessasignal“live”asitissampledandthenoutputtheprocessedsignal,forexampletoaloudspeakerorvideodisplay.
