Effectivestartingwiththisissue,theenveloperequirementforsizesthatpreviouslyappliedbyde‐faultinallcases(the"tolerancingprinciple"asperVolkswagenstandardVW01054)isnolonger

theonlyoptionfornewdrawings(i.e.,drawingsdraftedafterthisstandard'sdateofpublication),asthisissueintroducestheindependencyprincipleasanalternative.Thismeansthat,foreverynewdrawing,itisnecessarytochooseeithertheenveloperequirementortheindependencyprincipleandenteritintothetitleblock.See

1Scope

Thisstandardappliestothedimensioningandtolerancingusedinengineeringdrawings,inthe

three-dimensionaldrawing-lessprocess(3DZP),andinotherdocumentsinvolvedinthedevelop‐mentprocess.

ThisstandardadherestotheinternationalrulesforengineeringdrawingstothegreatestextentpossibleandhasbeenexpandedtomeetthespecificrequirementsoftheVolkswagenGroup.

Detailsthatarenotcoveredinthisstandardmustbeselectedasnecessarytomeetthespecificpurposeathand.Moreover,theymustbeunambiguous.

NOTE1:Thefiguresgiveninthisstandardareexamplestoillustratetherelevantrule.Theyarecompleteonlytotheextentthattheyshowthesituationdescribed.Theindicateddimensionsandtolerancesareintendedonlyasexamplevalues.

2Generaldimensioningandtolerancingrules

2.1Generalinformation

Inthedesignprocess,thecomponentsaredesignedwiththehelpofCADsystemsfromgeometri‐calfeatureswithnominaldimensionsandidealgeometricalshapes.Thesedesignednominalcom‐ponentmodelsarereferredtoas3-Dmodelsordatasets.

Duetothevariousfactorsinvolvedinthemanufacturingprocess,thecomponentsactuallypro‐

ducedwillhavedimensional,shape,andpositionaldeviations.Thesedeviationsmustbelimited

withappropriate,function-relateddimensional,location,orientation,runout,andformtolerancesinordertoensurethatthecomponentwillworkproperly.

2.2Generalrules

Thefollowinggeneraldimensioningandtolerancingrulesmustbeobserved:

–Thetypeoftolerancing(enveloperequirementforsizes(see

sectionA.1.1

)orindependencyprinciple)mustbespecifiedandenteredintothedrawing'stitleblock.

–Adatumsystemmustbedefinedbeforedimensioning.Thenominaldimensionsmustbeen‐teredbasedonthedatumfeatures.Thedatumfeaturesmustbetolerancedrelativetoeach

other.Thetolerancingiscarriedoutattheendinthefollowingorder:dimensional,location,

orientation,andformtolerances.Thefunctionandassemblyofindividualpartsplayadefiningrolewhenitcomestothedimensioningandtolerancing.

–Thedimensionsinadrawingarefinisheddimensionsandindicatetheendconditionofthepart,includingsurfaceprotection.Deviationsfromthis,e.g.,pre-turningdimensions,are

markedassuchwithtext.

–Inorderforthedrawingtobeeasilyunderstandable,dimensionsmustbeenteredoutsidethegraphicalrepresentationwheneverpossibleandonlyonceforeachgeometricalfeature(ex‐ception:repeatdimensions;see

section6.1

).

–Ifdimensionscannotbemadetofitinsmallgraphicalrepresentations,therepresentations,orappropriatedetails,mustbedrawnusingalargerscale(see

VW01050

).

–Inassembly(ASSY)drawings,onlythedimensionsthatarenecessaryforassemblyorforfur‐thermachiningareentered,e.g.,partsthataredrilledonceassembled.Becauseofthis,di‐

mensionsandtolerancesusedtomanufacturepartsmustbespecifiedinthepartdrawings.Inthe3-Ddrawing-lessprocess,partswithouttheirowndrawing(nodrawing)cannotbepro‐cessed;see

,"Requirements"section.Separatedrawingsmustbedraftedfortheseindividualparts.

–Thedimensioningandtolerancingmustbecomplete.Thismeansthatallnecessarygeometricrequirementsneededinorderforthepartstobemanufacturedandcheckedmustbespecifiedinthedrawingor3-Dmodel.Thedimensional,form,andpositionaldeviationsrelevanttofunc‐tionalcapabilitymustbelimitedforallgeometricalfeaturesbyusingindividualand/orgeneraltolerances.

–Thedimensioningandtolerancingmustbeunequivocal,i.e.,itmustbeimpossiblefortheretobeanyambiguitiesindownstreamprocesses,e.g.,productionand/orqualityassurance.

Bydefiningthetypeoftolerancinginanengineeringdrawing,i.e.,whethertheindependencyprin‐cipleisbeingusedortheenveloperequirementforsizesisgenerallyapplicable,adesignengineerdefineshowthecomponentswillbecheckedafterwards.Becauseofthis,itisabsolutelynecessaryforeverysingledrawingtoindicatethespecifictypeoftolerancingthatisbeingused.

3.1Generalapplicabilityofenveloperequirementforsizes

groovewidth,slotwidth,andkeywidth),tolerancedwithdimensionaltolerances(either"±"toleran‐cesorISOcodes,e.g.,H7)withoutadirectmarkingwithsymbolⒺafterthedimensionaltoler‐

ance.

3.1.1Enveloperequirement

Theenveloperequirementasper

definesacorrelationbetweendimensionaltolerance,formdeviation,andparallelismdeviationforsizes.Itstatesthatthedimensionaldevia‐tion,theformdeviation,andtheparallelismdeviationmustnotbegreaterthanthedimensionaltol‐eranceofthetolerancedgeometricalfeature.Inotherwords,itstatesthatforproperfit,afeature-of-size(see

sectionA.1.1

)oftype"cylinder"oroftype"twoparalleloppositeplanes"mustnotpen‐etrateageometricallyidealenveloperepresentingthemaximummaterialsize(gogage).Atthe

sametime,noactuallocalsizemustexceed(e.g.,holeandgroovewidth–internaldimensions)orfallbelow(e.g.,shaftandkey–externaldimensions)theleastmaterialsize(nogogage–two-

Theindependencyprinciplespecifiesthatalldimensional,form,andpositionaltolerancesina

drawingmustbecheckedandadheredtoindependentlyofeachotherunlessaspecialnote(see

sectionA.2

)indicatingotherwisehasbeenentered.

Thismeansthat:
