GlobalBEVmarketgrowsbymorethanathirdinQ2

Afteradifficult2024,totalBEVsalesinthetopfive

Europeanmarketsgrewbyaquarterinthefirsthalf

of2025

GlobalBEVsalesenjoyedsubstantialgrowthyearonyearinthesecondquarterof2025,increasingby33%comparedtoQ22024.Almostoneinfivecars(19%)soldinallanalyzedmarketsinthesecondquarterwasaBEV.

MuchofthatgrowthwaspoweredbyChina,whichwasresponsibleforalmosttwothirdsofglobalBEVsales.Indeed,BEVsalesinChinainthefirstsixmonthsoftheyear(H1)increasedbyalmostonehalf(47%)inrelationtothesameperiodin2024.

EuropehasalsoplayedasignificantroleinthegrowthoftheglobalBEVmarketin2025,withH1salesinthetopfiveEuropeanmarketsupbyaquarter(25%)yearonyear.TheperformanceintheseEuropeanmarketshasbeenparticularlywelcome,giventhetemporarysalesdipin2024.

Germany’sBEVmarkethasbouncedbackespeciallystrongly,growingbymorethanathird(35%)inH12025vs.H12024.GermanyandtheUKarecompetingforthetopspotinEuropeforBEVunitssold,withGermanytakingtheleadinthesecondquarteroftheyear.However,theUKhadthehighestBEVmarketshareamongthetopfiveEuropeanmarketsinthefirsthalfoftheyear,at22%.

TheUSBEVmarketdidnotfitwiththeglobaltrend,falling3%yearonyearinthesecondquarterof2025.However,asignificantupliftisexpectedinthethirdquarterasconsumersseektotakeadvantageoftheexisting$7,500taxcreditbeforeitsterminationattheendofSeptember.Asincentivesend,OEMsoperatingintheUSwillneedtopursuevariousstrategiestomaintainconsumerinterestinBEVs.

AmorefundamentalchallengeisfacingOEMsandgovernmentsworldwide–howtosecureasustainablesupplyoftherareearthelements(REEs)necessarytomanufactureelectricvehicles.ThereservesandproductionofREEsareheavilyconcentratedinveryfewcountries,makingthemapowerfulpotentialweaponingeopoliticalconflict.ThestrategiesthatOEMsandgovernmentscanadopttosafeguardtheirinterestsaresetoutinourAnalystInsightschapter.

Theglobalbattleforrareearthelements

Rareearthelements(REEs)playacrucialroleinmoderntechnology,servingasessentialcomponentsinvehicles–particularlyelectricvehicles–andinavarietyofotherproducts,includingsmartphonesanddiversemilitarytechnologies.

REEscompriseagroupof17heavymetals.NeodymiumandsamariumareparticularlyrelevantforEVmanufacturersastheyfacilitatetheproductionofsignificantlystrongerpermanentmagnets,resultinginpowerfulandefficientelectricmotors.

AlthoughREEsarecalledrare,theyareinfactcomparativelyplentiful–threetimesmorecommonintheearth’scrustthancopper,and200timesmorethanplatinumorgold.

Despitethisabundance,however,REEsarefoundinrelativelylowconcentrationscomparedtoothermetals,makingthemmuchmoredifficulttoextractandrefine,andraisingconcernsaboutenvironmentaldamageandsustainability.

AnotherchallengeposedbyREEsisthatreservesarelimitedtofewcountries,whileproductionisevenmorelocalized.Countrieswithsparseornon-existentreservesandproductionarethereforelefthighlyvulnerable.

Almosthalf(48%)ofknownglobalREEreservesarelocatedinChina,morethandoubletheamountfoundinthesecondmostendowedcountryBrazilwith23%.Moreover,ChinadominatesREEminingtoanevengreaterextent,accountingformorethantwothirds(69%)ofglobalproduction.

Suchdominancepresentsaconcentrationriskfortherestoftheworld,withREE-richcountriesabletousetheirresourcesaspowerfulleverageintradenegotiations.Otherlocation-specificrisksarealsorelevant:naturaldisasters,wars,socialunrest,politicalorregulatorychanges,andinfrastructurefailurescouldallleadtosupplychaindisruption.

Usingcommoditiesasgeopoliticalcloutisnothingnew.In2010,forexample,ChinablockedtheexporttoJapanofcrucialmineralsusedinproductssuchasEVs,windturbinesandguidedmissilesduetoadiplomaticdispute.

•Securesupply:Incentivesforexplorationactivities–suchas•Identifyalternativesourcing:TheEUfundedtheSecREEtstaxbreaks,accesstogovernmentfunding,andsimplifiedproject,whichseekstoensureasustainable,stableandsaferegimeshaveledtothediscoveryofvariouslargeREEextractionandprocessingofREEsinEurope.SecREEtsdepositsoutsideChina(suchasRamacoResources’depositresearchedmethodstoextractREEsfromphosphaterocksininWyomingandLKAB’sinSweden).TheEU’sCriticalRawfertilizerproduction.ItprovedtobeaviablewaytoenhanceMaterialsAct,whichaimstosecuresustainablesupply,hasself-sufficiency.Itleavesvirtuallynoadditionalenvironmentalfocusedminds.AlargeREEprocessingplantisduetoopeninfootprintandcatersfor10%ofEurope’sREErequirements.

AfterasmalldeclineinBEVsalesinthetopfiveEuropeanmarketsoverthecourseof2024,performancehasbouncedbackinthefirsthalfofthisyear.BEVsaleshaveincreasedby25%inH12025incomparisonwiththecorrespondingperiodlastyear,withmarketsharenowatanall-timehighof15%.

Germany’sBEVmarket,whichsufferedlastyearduetothewithdrawalofincentives,hasrecoveredstrongly.Ithasgrownby35%inH12025vs.H12024,boastingthehighestnumberofunitsalesofanyEuropeanmarketduringthisperiod(249,000).ThatfigurepipstheUKBEVmarket,whichalsogrewby35%YoYinthefirsthalfof2025.Ontheotherhand,Francehasfallenbackthisyear,downby6%YoYinthefirstsixmonthsoftheyearwhichisnonethelessbetterthantheoverallmarketdeclineof8%.

ThestrongestgrowthintheEuropeantop5thisyearhasbeenseeninSpain,upby84%YoYinthefirstsixmonthsof2025.Thisgrowthcomesfromarelativelylowbase,butitsBEVmarketshareisstartingtopullawayfromItaly,wherethemarkettrendshavepreviouslytendedtobesimilar.Spain’sBEVmarketsharenowstandsat8%,incomparisonwithItaly’s5%.Inthefirsthalfoftheyear,theUKhadthehighestBEVshareamongthetopfivemarketsat22%,withGermanyandFranceat18%.

PHEVgrowthwasalsostronginthetopfivemarkets,upby30%inH12025vs.H12024.Hybridsaleswereupby18%.TotalEVmarketshare(BEV,PHEVandhybridcombined)forthefirsthalfoftheyearwas61%.

WhenwelookatfiguresforthetopfiveandalltheotheranalyzedEuropeanmarketscombined,wecanseethatmorethanonemillionBEVsweresoldintheregionforthefirsttimeinthefirsthalfoftheyear.

China

BEVsalesstormedpastthetwomillionmarkinthesecondquarterof2025,increasingby42%incomparisontothesameperiodlastyear.ThesubstantialgrowthcanbeattributedinlargeparttothelaunchofpopularBEVmodels,suchastheGeelyXingyuan.TheconsumerappetiteforBEVsundoubtedlytooksalesawayfromthePHEVandhybridmarkets,whichbothgrewbyamoremodest6%YoYinQ2.

Asaresultofthissurgeinsales,BEVmarketshareinChinareachedalmostathird(32%)inthesecondquarter.TotalEVmarketshare(BEV,PHEVandhybridcombined)was53%.EVmarketsharealsoreachedmorethan50%forthefirsthalfofacalendaryearforthefirsttime.

TheEVmarketisexpectedtocontinuetoflourishoverthecourseoftherestoftheyear,asconsumersactbeforetheanticipatedcurtailmentoftwogovernmentincentivesattheendof2025-areductionintheNEV*purchasetaxexemptionandthescalingbackofthetrade-inschemewhichoffersfinancialinducementsthatencourageconsumerstoupgradetonewervehicles.

TheJapaneseEVmarketcontinuestobedominatedbythesaleofhybrids,withamarketshareof59%duringQ22025.However,boththeBEVandPHEVmarketsareshowingsignsoflife,upby27%and29%respectivelyYoY,albeitfromaverylowbase.

BEVsalesfellby3%inthesecondquarterof2025whencomparedwiththeequivalentquarterlastyear,thefirstquarterlyfallyear-on-yearsinceCOVID-affected2020.However,itiswidelyanticipatedthatthethirdquarterwillseesignificantgrowth,asconsumerslooktotakeadvantageoftheexistingtaxcreditofupto$7,500beforeitsterminationattheendofSeptember.BEVmarketsharestandsat7%.

PHEVsalesdeclinedby4%,thefourthsuccessivequarterlyyear-on-yearfall.ThisperformancecanpartlybeexplainedbythefactthatsomepopularPHEVmodelshaverecentlybecomeineligiblefortaxcreditsduetobatterysourcingrequirements.PHEVmarketshareforthesecondquarterwasjust2%.

Hybridsalesincreasedby36%,continuingtheimpressivegrowthofrecentyears,andreachingamarketshareof13%.Theexpansionisfueledbyincreasedproductavailabilityandrisingconsumerinterestinelectrifiedpowertrains.Despitethistrend,ICEvehiclesremainmuchmoredominantthaninEuropeorChina,withamarketshareof78%.

Asincentivesdisappear,OEMsarelikelytoadoptvariousstrategiestomaintainEVs’attractivenesstotheconsumer,suchasintroducinginnovativenewmodelsandoptimizingbatterytechnologytokeeppricesdown.
