S1.Scope.Thisstandardspecifiestiredimensionsandlaboratorytestre-quirementsforbeadunseatingresist-ance,strength,endurance,andhighspeedperformance;definestireloadratings;andspecifieslabelingrequire-mentsforpassengercartires.
S2.Application.Thisstandardappliestonewpneumaticradialtiresforuseonpassengercarsmanufacturedfrom1949through1975,newpneumaticbiasplytires,andT-typesparetires.How-ever,itdoesnotapplytoanytirethathasbeensoalteredsoastorenderim-possibleitsuse,oritsrepairforuse,asmotorvehicleequipment.
S3.Definitions.
Beadmeansthatpartofthetiremadeofsteelwires,wrappedorrein-forcedbyplycords,thatisshapedtofittherim.
Beadseparationmeansabreakdownofbondbetweencomponentsinthebeadarea.
Biasplytiremeansapneumatictireinwhichtheplycordsthatextendtothebeadsarelaidatalternateanglessubstantiallylessthan90tothecen-terlineofthetread.
Carcassmeansthetirestructure,ex-cepttreadandsidewallrubber.
Chunkingmeansthebreakingawayofpiecesofthetreadorsidewall.
Cordmeansthestrandsformingthepliesinthetire.
Cordseparationmeanscordspartingawayfromadjacentrubbercompounds.Crackingmeansanypartingwithinthetread,sidewall,orinnerlinerofthe
tireextendingtocordmaterial.
Groovemeansthespacebetweentwoadjacenttreadribs.
Innerlinermeansthelayer(s)formingtheinsidesurfaceofatubelesstirethatcontainstheinflatingmediumwithinthetire.
Innerlinerseparationmeansthepart-ingoftheinnerlinerfromcordmate-rialinthecarcass.
Loadratingmeansthemaximumloadatireisratedtocarryforagivenin-flationpressure.
Maximumpermissibleinflationpressuremeansthemaximumcoldinflationpressuretowhichatiremaybein-flated.
Maximumloadratingmeanstheloadratingatthemaximumpermissiblein-flationpressureforthattire.
Opensplicemeansanypartingatanyjunctionoftread,sidewall,orinnerlinerthatextendstocordmate-rial.
Overallwidthmeansthelineardis-tancebetweentheexteriorsoftheside-wallsofaninflatedtire,includingele-vationsduetolabeling,decorations,orprotectivebandsorribs.
Plymeansalayerofrubber-coatedparallelcords.
Plyseparationmeansapartingofrub-bercompoundbetweenadjacentplies.
Pneumatictiremeansamechanicaldevicemadeofrubber,chemicals,fab-ricandsteelorothermaterials,which,whenmountedonanautomotivewheel,providesthetractionandcon-tainsthegasorfluidthatsustainstheload.
Radialplytiremeansapneumatictireinwhichtheplycordswhichex-tendtothebeadsarelaidatsubstan-tially90tothecenterlineofthetread.Rimmeansametalsupportforatireoratireandtubeassemblyuponwhich
thetirebeadsareseated.
Sectionwidthmeansthelineardis-tancebetweentheexteriorsoftheside-wallsofaninflatedtire,excludingele-vationsduetolabeling,decoration,orprotectivebands.
Sidewallmeansthatportionofatirebetweenthetreadandthebead.
Sidewallseparationmeansthepartingoftherubbercompoundfromthecordmaterialinthesidewall.
Testrimmeans,withreferencetoatiretobetested,anyrimthatislistedasappropriateforusewiththattireinaccordancewithS4.4.Forpurposesofthissectionand§571.110,eachrimlist-ingshallincludedimensionalspecifica-tionsandadiagramoftherim.
Treadmeansthatportionofatirethatcomesintocontactwiththeroad.
Treadribmeansatreadsectionrun-ningcircumferentiallyaroundatire.
Treadseparationmeanspullingawayofthetreadfromthetirecarcass.
S4.Requirements.
S4.1Sizeandconstruction.Eachtireshallbedesignedtofiteachrimspeci-fiedforitssizedesignationineachref-erencecitedinthedefinitionoftestriminS3.
S4.2Performancerequirements.
S4.2.1General.Eachtireshallcon-formtoeachofthefollowing:
ItshallmeettherequirementsspecifiedinS4.2.2foritstiresizedes-ignation,type,andmaximumpermis-sibleinflationpressure.
Itsmaximumpermissibleinfla-tionpressureshallbeeither32,36,40,
or60psi,or240,280,300,340,or350kPa.
Itsloadratingshallbethatspeci-fiedinasubmissionmadebyanindi-vidualmanufacturer,pursuanttoS4.4.1(a),orinoneofthepublicationsdescribedinS4.4.1(b)foritssizedes-ignation,typeandeachappropriatein-flationpressure.Ifthemaximumloadratingforaparticulartiresizeisshowninmorethanoneofthepublica-tionsdescribedinS4.4.1(b),eachtireofthatsizedesignationshallhaveamax-imumloadratingthatisnotlessthanthepublishedmaximumloadrating,oriftherearedifferingmaximumloadratingsforthesametiresizedesigna-tion,notlessthanthelowestpublishedmaximumloadrating.
Itshallincorporateatreadwearindicatorthatwillprovideavisualin-dicationthatthetirehasworntoatreaddepthof1.6mm(1⁄16inch).
Itshall,beforebeingsubjectedtoeithertheendurancetestprocedurespecifiedinS5.4orthehighspeedper-formanceprocedurespecifiedinS5.5,exhibitnovisualevidenceoftread,sidewall,ply,cord,innerliner,orbeadseparation,chunking,brokencords,cracking,oropensplices.
ItshallmeettherequirementsofSandSwhentestedonatestwheeldescribedinSeitheraloneorsimultaneouslywithupto5othertires.
S4.2.2Testrequirements.
STestsample.Foreachtestsampleuse:
Onetireforphysicaldimensions,resistancetobeadunseating,andstrength,insequence;
Anothertirefortireendurance;and
Athirdtireforhighspeedper-formance.
SPhysicaldimensions.Theac-tualsectionwidthandoverallwidthforeachtiremeasuredinaccordancewithS5.1,shallnotexceedthesectionwidthspecifiedinasubmissionmadebyanindividualmanufacturer,pursu-anttoS4.4.1(a)orinoneofthepublica-tionsdescribedinS4.4.1(b)foritssizedesignationandtypebymorethan:
(Fortireswithamaximumper-missibleinflationpressureof32,36,or40psi)7percent,or
(Fortireswithamaximumper-missibleinflationpressureof240,280,
300,340or350kPa,or60psi)7percentor10mm(0.4inches),whicheverislarger.
STubelesstireresistancetobeadunseating.
S.1Whenatubelesstirethathasamaximuminflationpressureotherthan420kPa(60psi)istestedinaccordancewithS5.2,theappliedforcerequiredtounseatthetirebeadatthepointofcontactshallbenotlessthan:
6,670N(1,500pounds)fortireswithadesignatedsectionwidthoflessthan160mm(6inches);
8,890N(2,000pounds)fortireswithadesignatedsectionwidthof160mm(6inches)ormorebutlessthan205mm(8inches);
11,120N(2,500pounds)fortireswithadesignatedsectionwidthof205mm(8inches)ormore,usingthesec-tionwidthspecifiedinasubmissionmadebyanindividualmanufacturer,pursuanttoS4.4.1(a),orinoneofthepublicationsdescribedinS4.4.1(b)fortheapplicabletiresizedesignationandtype.
S.2Whenatirethathasamaximuminflationpressureof420kPa(60psi)istestedinaccordancewithS5.2,theappliedforcerequiredtoun-seatthebeadatthepointofcontactshallbenotlessthan:
6,670N(1,500pounds)fortireswithamaximumloadratingoflessthan399kg(880pounds);
8,890N(2,000pounds)fortireswithamaximumloadratingof399kg
(880pounds)ormorebutlessthan635kg(1,400pounds);
11,120N(2,500pounds)fortireswithamaximumloadratingof635kg(1,400pounds)ormore,usingthemax-imumloadratingmarkedontheside-wallofthetire.
STirestrength.EachtireshallmeettherequirementsforminimumbreakingenergyspecifiedinTable1whentestedinaccordancewithS5.3.
STireendurance.Whenthetirehasbeensubjectedtothelabora-toryendurancetestspecifiedinS5.4,usingatestrimthatundergoesnoper-manentdeformationandallowsnolossofairthroughtheportionthatitcom-prisesofthetire-rimpressurechamber:
Thereshallbenovisualevidenceoftread,sidewall,ply,cord,innerliner,orbeadseparation,chunking,brokencords,cracking,oropensplices.
ThetirepressureattheendofthetestshallbenotlessthantheinitialpressuresspecifiedinS.
SHighspeedperformance.WhenthetirehasbeensubjectedtothelaboratoryhighspeedperformancetestspecifiedinS5.5,usingatestrimthatundergoesnopermanentdeformationandallowsnolossofairthroughtheportionthatitcomprisesofthetire-rimpressurechamber,thetireshallmeettherequirementssetforthinS(a)and(b).
S4.3LabelingRequirements.ExceptasprovidedinS4.3.1andS4.3.2ofthisstandard,eachtire,exceptforthosecertifiedtocomplywithS5.5of
§571.139,shallhavepermanentlymold-edintoorontobothsidewalls,inlet-tersandnumeralsnotlessthan0.078incheshigh,theinformationshowninparagraphsS4.3(a)through(g)ofthisstandard.Onatleastonesidewall,theinformationshallbepositionedinanareabetweenthemaximumsectionwidthandbeadofthetire,unlessthemaximumsectionwidthofthetirefallsbetweenthebeadandone-fourthofthedistancefromthebeadtotheshoulderofthetire.Fortireswherethemaximumsectionwidthfallsinthatarea,locateallrequiredlabelingbetweenthebeadandapointone-halfthedistancefromthebeadtotheshoulderofthetire.However,innocaseshalltheinformationbeposi-tionedonthetiresothatitisob-
structedbytheflangeoranyrimdes-ignatedforusewiththattireinStand-ardsNos.109and110(Sec.571.109andSec.571.110ofthispart).
Onesizedesignation,exceptthatequivalentinchandmetricsizedes-ignationsmaybeused;
Maximumpermissibleinflationpressure;
Maximumloadrating;
Thegenericnameofeachcordmaterialusedintheplies(bothside-wallandtreadarea)ofthetire;
Actualnumberofpliesintheside-wall,andtheactualnumberofpliesinthetreadareaifdifferent;
Thewords‘‘tubeless’’or‘‘tubetype’’asapplicable;and
Theword‘‘radial’’ifthetireisaradialplytire.
S4.3.1EachtireshallbelabeledwiththesymbolDOTinthemannerspecifiedinpart574ofthischapter,whichshallconstituteacertificationthatthetireconformstoapplicableFederalmotorvehiclesafetystand-ards.
S4.3.2Eachtireshallbelabeledwiththenameofthemanufacturer,orbrandnameandnumberassignedtothemanufacturerinthemannerspeci-fiedinpart574.
S4.3.3[Reserved]
S4.3.4Ifthemaximuminflationpres-sureofatireis240,280,300,340,or350kPa,then:
EachmarkingofthatinflationpressurepursuanttoS4.3(b)shallbefollowedinparenthesisbytheequiva-lentinflationpressureinpsi,roundedtothenexthigherwholenumber;and
Eachmarkingofthetire’smax-imumloadratingpursuanttoS4.3(c)inkilogramsshallbefollowedinparen-thesisbytheequivalentloadratinginpounds,roundedtothenearestwholenumber.
S4.3.5Ifthemaximuminflationpressureofatireis420kPa(60psi),thetireshallhavepermanentlymoldedintoorontobothsidewalls,inlettersandnumeralsnotlessthan12.7mm(1⁄2inch),thewords‘‘Inflateto420kPa(60psi)’’.Onbothsidewalls,thewordsshallbepositionedinanareabetweenthetireshoulderandthebeadofthetire.However,innocaseshallthewordsbepositionedonthetiresothattheyareobstructedbytheflangeof
anyrimdesignatedforusewiththattireinthisstandardorinStandardNo.110(§571.110ofthispart).
S4.4Tireandrimmatchinginforma-tion.
S4.4.1EachmanufactureroftiresnotcertifiedtocomplywithS4of
§571.139shallensurethatalistingoftherimsthatmaybeusedwitheachtirethatheproducesisprovidedtothepublic.Alistingcompiledinaccord-ancewithparagraph(a)ofS4.4.1ofthisstandardneednotincludedimensionalspecificationsordiagramofarimiftherim’sdimensionalspecificationsanddiagramarecontainedineachlist-ingpublishedinaccordancewithpara-graph(b)ofS4.4.1ofthisstandard.Thelistingshallbeinoneofthefollowingforms:
