Sustainabilityhasbecomeanincreasinglycritical

concernacrossindustries,andthepharmaceuticalsectorisnoexception.Onceviewedprimarilythroughthelens

ofdrugdiscovery,manufacturing,anddistribution,theindustryisnowundergrowingpressuretoconsiderthebroaderenvironmental,social,andeconomicimpactsofitsoperations.Risingexpectationsfromgovernments,investors,patients,andthepublicarepushing

pharmaceuticalcompaniestointegratesustainabilitynotonlyintocomplianceandreporting,butalsointo

theircorebusinessmodels.Againstthisbackdrop,the

pharmaceuticalindustryfacesuniquechallenges:energy-intensiveproductionprocesses,complexglobalsupply

chains,stringentregulatoryframeworks,andalegacyofhighwasteoutput.

InarecentsurveyconductedbyCPHI,individualswere

askedwhatthemainblockorchallengeintheirroleiswhenitcomestoenactingsustainablepractices.Inresponse,

manyindividualspointedtothecostofsustainable

productsandthereluctanceofcustomerstoinvestin

genuinesolutions,oftenfallinginthetrapofgreenwashingratherthanenactingmeaningfulchange.Scope3emissionsandtheavailabilityofaccuratedataforrawmaterialswerealsoconsideredsignificanthurdles,alongsidecompeting

prioritiesandunclearlinkstoROI.Regulatorychallenges,includingongoingchanges,competingtimelines,and

undefinedrequirements,werefrequentlymentioned,as

wastheslowpaceofchangeduetoframeworkslikeGxP.

Additionally,internalcoordination,externalpressures,andthelackofstrongdriversforrenewableenergyadoption

werenoted,compoundedbylimitedgovernmentand

politicalwill.Somerespondentsalsoemphasisedthe

difficultyofbalancingtechnicalcredentials,suchasethicalsourcingandwasteminimisation,witheffectivemarketingthatavoidsoversimplificationoroverpromising.

Althoughmanyofthechallengesweremutuallyfeltandalsocoveredabroadrangeofareas,whichindicatesa

longwaytogofortheindustrytobeindeniablyontrack

whenitcomestomanagingsustainabilitygoals.Yetthesechallengesalsopresentopportunitiesforcollaboration,

innovation,andleadershipinshapingamoresustainablefuture.

Thecurrentpoliticalclimate,particularlyintheUnited

States,hasasignificantinfluenceonthepharmaceutical

industry’ssustainabilityagenda.Policyshiftsunderdifferentadministrationshavebeenshowntoreshapepriorities

forcompaniesovernight,fromdrugpricingreformand

internationaltradetoenvironmentalprotections[1].For

instance,theTrumpadministration’stradetariffsdisruptedglobalsupplychains,increasingcostsforrawmaterialsandactivepharmaceuticalingredients.Furtherderegulationofenvironmentallawshavereducedcompliancepressures

intheshorttermbutheightenedreputationalrisksfor

companiesseekingtopositionthemselvesassustainabilityleaders,andthisultimatelyaddstofurtherdamageto

theplanet.Thedebatearounddrugpricingcontinuesto

dominateUSpolitics,withimplicationsforprofitability,

access,andinvestmentinlong-termsustainability

initiatives.Inanindustrysoreliantonstableregulationandpredictablemarkets,politicalvolatilityamplifiesuncertainty.Thismayinadvertentlyleadtosustainabilitystrategies

beingdeprioritisedduetotheirincreasedcomplexity,butinreality,thesestrategiesarenowevenmorecriticalforresilienceandlong-termstability.

Communicationaroundsustainabilityisanessentialpartoftheoperationwhenbuildingintegratedandmeaningfulstepsaroundthesubjectinabusiness.

Sustainabilitycantoucheveryaspectofhowacompanyworks,therefore,thecommunicationthatrunsparallel

tothismustbeofasimilarlyhighqualitytoensurethe

fullpotentialismet.Thiscanincludetheconversations

withcustomers,withsuppliersandpartners,aswellasfortheownersandinvestors,andfortheemployees.Good

communicationleadstotransparencyinactions,whichiskeyinahighprofilefieldsuchassustainabilitywithinthepharmaceuticalindustry.Therearesomanyadvantagestohavingclearmessagingaroundsustainability,whetherit’sinthebreakingdownofknowledgesilostobettersharelearnings,inclarityaroundregulationsandguidelines,orwhenitcomesdowntoanindividuallevel,andcanaidinsalesandbrandawareness[2].Eachhaveavitaleffectonthehealthofthebusinessasawhole.

Theheighteningprofileofsustainabilityinthissectorand

othersmeansmorescrutinyisbeingplacedoncompanies,bybanks,investors,governments,partners,andconsumers.Inthepharmaceuticalindustry,sustainablepracticesare

lessconsumerdriventhaninotherindustries,suchasthefoodorfashionindustry,butmoresofromthosedirectlyinvolvedinthebusinessorfrompartnerships.

theirESGstrategiesandstatements,intheirexternalandinternalmessaging.Communicationisbackedupby

data,byreportingsystemsandbyactions.Toensurea

companyhasawell-roundedstrategyaboutsustainablecommunication,thereareseveralothermovingparts

thatneedtobeofacertainstandard.Thisisoftenwherecompaniescanfallshortandbeguiltyofgreenwashing,wheretheircommunicationandthenarrativetheyare

feedingisnotsupportedbyreasonableandlong-termaction[2].

Thereareseveralpitfallstoavoidwhenitcomesto

communicatingaboutsustainability,fromgreenwashing,tooverselling,andvagueclaims.Someofthesedont

necessarilyhappenonpurpose,ofcourseacompany

wantstohighlightthethingstheyaredoingwellandare

lessinclinedtohighlightthethingstheyarestrugglingwith,butthisiswherethereneedstobeamindsetshift,asthe

strugglesarejustas,ifnotmoreimportanttoshedlighton,asthisisoftenwherethemostmeaningfulchangesand

thereforethegreatestprogresscanbemade.
