Inresponse,youngpeoplearediversifyingincomethroughsidehustles,freelanceworkandsmall
ventures–particularlyindigitalandservicesectors.7Theseadaptivebehavioursshowresilienceand
innovation,buttheyalsounderlineacriticaltruth:
Youthemploymentisacornerstoneofinclusivegrowth
Employmentremainsthedefiningeconomic
priorityforthisgeneration.Fifty-sevenpercent
ofrespondentsidentifyyouthemploymentand
meaningfuleconomicopportunityasthetoppolicypriorityforgovernmentsandinstitutions(seeFigure17).Theirmessageisclear:inclusivegrowthbeginswithworkthatofferspurposeandprogression.
Yet,barrierspersist.Youngpeoplearethree
timesmorelikelythanothergenerationstobe
unemployed,andnearly70%inlow-andmiddle-incomecountriesworkinformally.8Automation
andAIarereshapingentry-leveljobs,while
progressinreskillingandapprenticeshipshas
lagged.9Youthunemploymentexceeds25%in
NorthAfricaandSouthernEurope,10whileinEastandSouthAsia,asurgeingig-basedworkoffersflexibilitybutlimitedsecurity.11
Expandingyouthemploymentdemands
coordinatedaction:governmentsinvestingin
inclusivelabour-marketpolicies,businesses
creatingequitableentrypathways,andeducationsystemsaligningskillswithemergingdemand.
Whenyoungpeoplearepartnersindesigningthesesolutions,employmentbecomesnotonlyasourceofincomebutafoundationfordignity,trustand
sharedprosperity.
CASESTUDY1.REIMAGININGENTRYPATHWAYS–GHANA’SMYFIRSTJOBINITIATIVE
Youth-ledinnovationistransformingnationalserviceintoalaunchpadforemploymentandskilldevelopment.
InGhana,nearly90%oftertiarygraduatesremainunemployedduringtheirfirstyearaftergraduation,reflectingagapbetweenacademicpreparationandemployability.
Toaddressthis,aninitiativecalledMyFirstJob–conceivedandledbyyoungleadersattheGlobalShapersAccraHub,inpartnershipwiththeMinistryofEducationandtheNationalServiceSecretariat–reimaginesthecountry’smandatory
nationalserviceplacementschemeasalaunchpadfor
meaningfulyouthemployment.Theschemerunsamandatoryone-yearprogrammefortertiarygraduates,providingthem
withpracticalworkexperience.
MyFirstJobintegratesskilldevelopment,coachingandindustrymentorshipintotheexistingserviceyear,equippingparticipantswithpracticalexperienceandpathwaysintothelabourmarket.Followingthesix-monthaccelerator,60%ofparticipants
securedtheirfirstjobwithinthreemonthsofcompletion.
Byaligningyouth-ledinnovationwithpublic-sector
infrastructure,MyFirstJobdemonstrateshowintergenerationalcollaborationcantransformpolicyintoimpact.Itsscalable
modeloffersablueprintforothercountriesseekingtoenhancegraduateemployability,fosterentrepreneurshipandbuild
systemswhereyoungpeoplearenotjustbeneficiaries,butco-designersofsolutions.
Redefiningworkandpurpose
Forthefirsttimeinhistory,fivegenerations
areworkingsidebyside.12Whenaskedwhat
mattersmostfortheirfuture,youngrespondents
emphasizedasenseofpurpose(61%)andbalance(50%)abovetraditionalbenefitssuchasmedical
coverageorretirementsavings.
Thissignalsaredefinitionofsuccess:whilepreviousgenerationsequatedprosperitywithstability,13
youngpeopletodayemphasizemeaning,flexibilityandalignmentwithpersonalvalues.Workisnotjustalivelihood,butameansofcontribution–acallforaneconomicsthatrewardsmeaning,well-being
andcollaborationalongsideproductivity.
