Budget2017committed$80MoverfiveyearstoreplacetheSidneyCentreforPlantHealthwithanew,worldclassplanthealthresearchfacility.Thiswaspartofthefederalgovernment’scommitmenttoestablishingandmaintainingmodernfederalscienceinfrastructure.ThisfundingwillhelpsupportthesafetyofCanada’sagricultureandagri-foodsector,whilefacilitatingtradeandeconomicgrowthtothebenefitofallCanadians.

KEYFACTS

GRDIfundingbenefitsCFIAbysupportingandbuildingoncorestrengthsofthedevelopmentofgenomicstoolsandthroughtheproductionofgenomicsknowledgetostrengthenprogramstoreducebaseriskstofoodsafety,andplantandanimalresources.Furtherdevelopinggenomics-basedtechnologiestoprevent,detect,andrespondtohigh-consequencepathogens(e.g.food-bornepathogens,emerginganimaldiseases),reportablediseases(e.g.Foreignanimaldiseases),andpests(e.g.invasivespeciesandforestpests)willinformriskassessmentandmanagementapproaches.
