、ockcroft That night, the girls finished the Nasump, or samp, by adding blueberries and cinnamon to Little Deers pot and the wild onion and garlic to Ellinors. Each pot of corn porridge had a different taste, but both were delicious. Together, they served Governor Bradford and Massasoit at their tabl

The yellow- haired girl smiled. “Youre welcome, Little Deer.” Little Deer turned back to the sea. “Quahogs,” she muttered. “Quahogs.” “Im sorry you lost them,” Ellinor said. “But we still have the salted pork.” But even being bruised didnt change Little Deers determination to do things her way. 13、or stopped her work and ran outside to the garden. “Father, why is Captain Standish marching soldiers so early?” “The men are hunting so we can rejoice together!” Her father answered, as he picked a large, orange pompion. Ellinor crinkled her eyebrows. “What do you speak of?” Just then, the newest g
、overnor of the English colony, William Bradford, walked up to join Ellinor and her father, saying, “It will be a fit celebration for a good harvest!” 214 “Sister, dont you know?” Ellinors little brother said. “The men have gone fowling to bring us meat for our first harvest feast!” He ran off with t
、he pompion as their three-year-old sister clung to his doublet, or waistcoat. “Is this true, father?” Ellinors heart pounded. There had not been much to celebrate over the past year. Ellinor and her family were a part of a group of 102 English colonists who sailed on The Mayflower in the winter of 1
、621 to Plymouth Plantation. “Yes, we will celebrate, even though we have suffered greatly,” he said. Two Kettles Ellinor hesitated for a moment, and then ran out to the edge of the water. “Take my apron, Little Deer!” Little Deers eyelids fluttered. She felt the cold ocean water pull her down where
、it was quiet and dark. A blurry yellow object stood above her when something flopped down into the water. Little Deer took hold and felt herself moving toward safety. Ellinor tugged as hard as she could. Little Deer was heavier than she looked. Ellinor pulled harder. Little Deer slowly came toward t
、he rocks. She pushed herself up as pain shot through her arm. “Are you badly injured?” Ellinor squatted next to her. Little Deer did not understand, but when she sat up, Tiptoe leaped into her arms. She looked up and Ellinor smiled. The English girl had saved her life! Ellinor pointed up the hill. “
、We should return.” She grabbed onto Little Deers arm and lifted her gently. 520 Just then, another musket shot rang out through the sky. Tiptoe startled and ran down the beach and up onto a rocky cliff. Little Deer shouted his name, but the skunk climbed higher. Both girls ran toward the cliff. Litt
、le Deer scrambled up the rock, the netted bag full of clams bouncing on her back. Tiptoe huddled in a hole near the top. Little Deer continued upward, one foot at a time until she had almost reached him. With her next step, a rock gave way and Little Deer crashed down against the cliff. She struggle
、d to grab on, but there was nothing to cling to. Her whole body slid down the side of the cliff, rocks and dirt scattering and tumbling down with her until Little Deer fell hard into the water. The winter had been unbearable. Only half of her village had survived until springtime. Her own mother had
、 perished from disease. Luckily, a native man named Tisquantum, who the colonists called Squanto, spoke English and agreed to live with them as a translator. He taught the people in her community how to plant, hunt, fish, and gather. Without this knowledge, Ellinor knew they would not have survived
、and flourished. “In honor of our survival, men have been sent out to hunt fowl. But there are only four women left with us to prepare the food. You are old enough and must join them,” Governor Bradford said. Ellinor nodded as her heart fluttered. 196 Little Deers Misgivings “Mother!” Little Deer cal
、led out as she threaded a piece of sinew (SIN-you), thread made from deer tendon, through her bone needle. Her pet skunk, Tiptoe, slept in her lap. “Mother, I need more deerskin for this . . . ” A flock of birds flapped their wings in the sky above. Tiptoe awoke. Little Deer ran outside of her wetu,
、 or house. Hundreds of birds flew above, casting a shadow down over her. There was a commotion near the longhouse, or meeting house. Little Deer pulled three quahogs out of the mud and stuffed them into her netted bag. The evening was soon upon them, so Little Deer motioned for the girl to help. Rel
、uctantly, the English girl got to her knees and began searching for holes in the mud. She quickly pulled out quahogs, as if she had done this often. A wave snuck up behind them, knocking them both over into water. Little Deer almost smiled and she thought the English girl did too. 718 The yellow-hai
、red girl appeared and motioned for Little Deer to come back to the village. Little Deer ignored her and continued pulling onions and garlic. The English girl stepped out onto a rock near the edge of the stream. She lost her balance and whoosh! she slipped into the water. Little Deer giggled. The yel
、low-haired girl stood up, wringing the water out of her thick garments. She spoke harsh, English words that Little Deer did not understand. Little Deer wondered why she wore so many layers of thick clothing that would not dry easily. Little Deer stuffed the onions and garlic into her pouch and heade
、d downstream to the ocean. She could hear the English girl sloshing behind her. The shoreline was rocky but it provided ample mudflats for finding quahogs. Little Deer watched the mud for the small holes that revealed where the clams hid. The English girl came up next to her and stood there with her
、 hands on her hips. “Many shots were fired at the English village,” Little Deers mother said. “Our leader, Yellow Feather, meets with important leaders from neighboring tribes.” Little Deer felt her stomach tighten. Her tribe, the Pokanoket (poo-kah-noo-ket), was one of 67 Wampanoag (wam-pa-NO-ag) n
、ations. The “people of the first light” had fished the waters, planted crops, and hunted the animals in this area for thousands of years. Little Deer, like her elders, was taught to use their many resources with respect to preserve them for the future. “We do not know if the shots signal the English
、mens preparation for war,” Yellow Feather said as he came out of the longhouse and walked through the village. “I will take 90 men with me. Prepare your weapons. We leave soon.” Yellow Feather recently had made a treaty with the English so they would come to each others aid in war. A year ago, the E
、nglish had arrived upon Wampanoag land, building a village without asking permission. They knew little about survival and how to get food, make shelters, wear appropriate clothing, and build canoes. They had depended on Tisquantum, a Patuxet 178 Wampanoag, to teach them how to survive. Little Deer w
、as angry and resentful toward the English for taking Wampanoag land and bringing diseases, which killed thousands of her people. Plymouth Plantation had once been the village of Patuxet, home to Little Deers very best friend, before the entire village fell to the plague. Now Little Deer felt as if s
、he could not breathe. There had not been a war in her village since she was small. There was a strange feeling in the air, like an invisible cloud had just darkened her world. Little Deer hoped she was wrong. Collecting Quahogs Little Deer ran first to the stream that flowed near the village, then T
、iptoe popped out of her hands and explored the tall reeds that grew near the water. The stream felt cool on Little Deers feet. She hopped across the rocks with ease, like a light-footed deer. Little Deer was searching for wild onions when she heard heavy footsteps behind her. 916 Both girls ground t
、he corn into flour for many hours. Ellinor was most uncomfortable and wearypartly because of her cooking partner and partly from the hard work. She added the new flour to the large supply of corn flour that had already been ground. Two large kettles filled with water hung over the open hearth. As th
、e water boiled, Ellinor scooped the corn flour and added it to one kettle. Little Deer added corn mixture to the other. The skunk brushed against Ellinors leg. “AHHH!” Ellinor screamed and dropped her cup. “It isnt proper for a wild animal to be near the food!” Little Deer giggled and scooped Tiptoe
、 into her arms. Ellinor crossed her arms and walked toward a small shed where she pulled out a large piece of salted pork. Ellinor cut it into small pieces and added it to her kettle. She began to place pork into the other pot, but Little Deer stopped her. She shook her head and said, “Quahogs.” Bef
、ore Ellinor could respond, Little Deer ran down the hill, skunk in hand, off toward the ocean. A Fit Feast Watching the men leave for the English village gave Little Deer an ache in the pit of her stomach. She ran down to the stream with Tiptoe, where she would let the water rush away her worry. Dow
、n at the Plymouth Plantation, Ellinor noticed Governor Bradford, Squanto, Captain Standish and a few soldiers dash down the hill. “Look! The Indians are coming!” someone shouted. Ellinor froze. From far down the hill, a very large group of Wampanoag men led by their leader, who the English called Ma
、ssasoit (MA-sa- soy-it), marched toward Plymouth. Ellinor shivered. Governor Bradford had made peace with them, but she still silently asked for Gods protectionshe did not understand the Wampanoag and their ways. With Squanto as the translator, the governor welcomed Massasoit and his men. “We heard
、many guns,” Squanto translated for Massasoit. “Do you prepare for war?” “No,” the governor said. “There is no war. We are preparing our bounties for a joyous harvest feast.” 1510 Governor Bradford led Massasoit through the village. “The men are hunting fowl. We are all in preparation.” Massasoit ins
、pected the village. A woman stewed pompions while a little girl husked corn. Ellinor followed behind without being noticed. “We celebrate with a feast and recreations, like football and games of chance,” Governor Bradford said. “It will be a most hopeful time. Please join us.” Massasoit nodded and S
、quanto said, “They will stay. Yellow Feather will send men out to hunt deer and retrieve the women and children from the village.” “We are pleased,” said the governor. “Captain, tell everyone that King Massasoit and his people will rejoice with us and partake in our plenty.” Ellinors heart dropped.
、What was once a feast for 52 had now become a feast for well over a hundred. And how would she ever feel comfortable around so many strangers? Making Nasump Ellinor poured a cup of dried kernels into the hollowed log and began to grind them with a stone pestle. Little Deer did the same. Neither girl spoke or looked at one another. The skunk that sat at Little Deers feet made Ellinor nervous. She was not accustomed to being so close to w
